ztion from the detail of business. If we
consider the e'rfliaent services,'rendered at
different times by the prince of Benevento-,
no honor in the power of Bonaparte to be-
stow will appear too great a reward;. What
ever post, however, the,weary politician
may be promoted to fill, he will, doubtless,
continue to take an active part in the Impe-
rial councils.
TheDutch papers mention, that the Icing
of Holland has given orders that the govern-
or of Owrrapoa, and those concerned with
him, shall be delivered up to the supreme
tribunal, and prosecuted with all the rigor
of the law.
Our expedition is said to have occasioned
very little impression even in those places
ag.inst which it is tmderstnod to he directed.
A tendency to desertion is stated to prevail
amo i'X the Hanoverian troops iu the island
of rTugeti,
-' rlmiral CoHinrrwood is now generally
understood to have proceeded with a squa-
dron to the Dardanelles, with a view of act-
ing towards the Radian fleet as circumstan-
ces may requ're. Every account both fo-
reign and domestic, plainly indicate the
advanced formation of tha> hostile confe
deracy to which his majesty's speech refers.
Copenhagen, August "IX.
At the present moment ail is COvjecture, ,
confusion and anxiety. The island is now
completely encircled by the British .fleet,
arid -intilyesterday, even the ministry were
i>;-nrant of the motives of its appearance
or designs.
STRALSUND.
Our last accounts from Stra sund are to
me 2d August, at v hich time the seip;e
had n t been formally commenced, altho'
several -mart engagements had taken place
between the outposts of. the garrison, and
tV besieging army. The inhabitants had pe-
titioned the king, to restore them to thebles-
SMigs of peace; but his answer was, that he
tuould rather perish in its ruins, than submit
to ignoble terms. The siege is likely to be
a vtork of time.
The cosst of the German ocean, from
the frontiers .f Holland to the mouth of the
Elbe, is to be occupied by Dutch troops.
Bonaparte, it seems, is at last to be can-
lionized. A monument is erecting for him
at Paris, 150 feet high. One hundred feet
of this elevation is already complete, and
the other fifty is to be built of the cannon
taken in the late campaigns against Austria,
Prussia, and Russia, and «'ill be the most
Surprising and magnificent building of the
sort in the w rid. The whole it is sa'd is
to be surmounted with a collossal figure of
the tyrant himself.
Altona, August 14
This afternoon an old established commer-
cial h u^e here received advice by an estafet-
ta from Srahaind (via Rostoch) that the
French had been repulsed, with great loss,
in t o attempts to t ike that place by assault
the beginning of this week.

be about nine miles. The company offered
to open the road, to bridge it where neces-
sary, to leve) and shape it—and, after doing
these things, they pledged themselves to
give it to the countyi free qi. toll. This
road, had it been ranted, would have given
to Okltown and the Point a channel of com-
munication with Hanover; nearer than the
west end of the city has by the Reister's-

COMMUNICATION.
Several publications have appeared in the
papers, tending to make Pratt street the
pivot on which next Monday's election is to
turn, and a cause for which Jesse Hollmgs-
worth is to be kept out of the legislature.
Had we nothing but Pratt-street to contend
for, there might be some kind of excuse for
such conduct: but when we view our politi-
cal horizon, and the critical situation of our
country, we are called upon by imperious
duty to elect men of experience, whose long
acquaintance with the city and country in
public life, render them capable of judging
what will i e best to be done, and who have
utterance as well as knowledge and expe-
rience ; Pratt-street, there.'^re, oughtto rest,
and he out of the question for the present.
I have known J. Hollingsworth for many
years past, I have ever considered him wor-
thy any trust in the disposal of his fellow-
citizens. He lias never hesitated to come
forward whenever his personal services have
been wanted, in any station or situation in
life. In the time of our revolution he was
called upon to supply the wants of the Ame-
rican prisoners; and provided the materials
and superintended the building of one of
the Amarican frigates, whim services he
performed without fee or reward. During
the yellow fever of 1800 he attended the
sick, relieved their distresses, and assisted
the board of health in building the Bar-
racks for the accommodetion of the afflicted
and indigent. He has been instrumental
in bringing forward two large Charity
sch ols. and is now a superiutendant of
both, he has frequently attended thelegisla
ture, to get good roads to our city, and has
contributed much to the success those appli-
cations met with.
In short, during my long acquaintance
w'uh him, I have not known one person so
olten called upon to assist in useful and cha-
ritable designs and undertakings, which he
always performed nr >st cheerfully, without
fee or reward. The citizens ol Baltimore
may therefore safely repose confidence in
Jes-e Hollingsworth, and give him their
mhVages ; and they may rest assured that
the man wh . ha,, bueu the tathei to the fa-
therless, the husband to the widow, the
orphan's friend, and the ready servant of his
city and country upon all occasions, will
faithfully and honestly attend to their inte-
rest. A. F.
