Octo er 6. 1 t Managers, d4t LONDON, August 24. COMMERCIAL ST^TE OF THE WEST INDIES. The report on the ce>mmercial state of the West India colonies, laid before our readers in the Star of Tuesday last, is of in- finate importance. Amidst the suspicions ¦which frequently arise in the breast of the public, that disquisitions in the houses of parliament are sometimes subject to receive the impressions of party, it must be observ- ed, with great satisfaction, that reports, founded on the best evidence, are fair, full t and impartial. We might on the present occasion call for some degree of credit, be- cause our opinions, whenever we have ha- zarded them on tbat--stibject, have been per- fectly in unison with the result of the West- Indta rep.its. Two pamphlets have been published, which ou,»ht to have opened the eyes of the public. They c ntain positive and un- deniable facts ; and they have bsen answer- ed only by vague declamation and metaphy- sical subtleties, which have sottiethiug of the SDi'rit, but nothing of | .;e ceaSoh, cr even the expediency of Gro! us, in h s Mare Liberum. A third pamphlet '. s made its a;e.>etrance Within these ie.v days—•' An inquiry into the state 'f the British West-Indies"—which ai-o deserves great attention, '1 uat tiie American system, which bus been c.illed a system of neutrality, is 111 fact the most detrimental hostility to the dearest interests of this country, is :iearly proved by these pamphlets and by tin r-. pen aihtded to. U'lless wo reyart to the maritime code of the war of 1736, which aiiuinilated the French trade and navy, we shall continue to have the mortification of losing our com- mercial advantages, and seeing those of mr enemies flourish and increase That 'he Americans are only boldii g the cards fifc the French, is clearly pitived by their stipulation to restore their vessels at m> e.-.d of the war. This ciicum aoce. among others, which shewed the deterroinatiofi of Bona- parte to move heaven and earth to rai'e a powerful navy, we mentioned in ISO'! In fact, without a Berioos resolution to main- tain our rights at any risk, /.«. may as wdl throw out commerce and indpendetiCr- into the lap of France. Will America declare war against ns ? She might, indeed, invade and conquer Canada ; but she would lose i>- r tr..de. Reflection must arise in the minds of hei sober citizens ; they will see that every thing taken from ns is a" acquisition to France ; and ti.at Franc- Will -is vie have said before, be, in thei-u•'. the arbkress of the States., who will then be truly United, under her1 compres- sive authority. [iSrar.j Wanted. Wanted a Young Man, u native of the Eas- tern Shore ol Mainland, of good morals, who has a knowledge of the Groctrv business, and is pretty extensively acquainted with the trad- ing towns on the shore. To such a oueja liber- al salary will he given. Apply to the printers. Oct. 5___________________________d4t Stray Cow. A letter frca-i a wtU-informed American, •p? :;ig in France, dated Paris, August 8, 1807, stys. " You may place reliance on the fact, that Bonaparte will tibw turn his attention to the acquisition ei :ps com- merce and colcr.ies.' All the d; < I. yard; in the empite are i gnat activity, particularly at Antwerp, where teen- is an immense col- lection of ship timber. I am told, he is..e- termined to annul Mr. Jeiurser's famous Louisiafia puichase, and, you may depend. that that region, and the island of Cuba abo, will be ceded by Spain to F'ance; and that Spain will be iedemiifed inPortu Mil."
