Th.1: p.dtty attack agairiW me ill Sattli
" Observer" should have been t
silent contempt, had it ivot plainly.app
to me aH the effect of my non-compljanee with
a requisition previously mpde. fo enable the
public duly to appreciate Mistress Beatrice's
disinterested ze".! in thi ir behalf, I wiUin'form
them o. the curious circumstance to which I
allude. On the 2d of October 1 received a
letter, the purport of which, as near as 1 can
re ollect, was as follows :
" In the course of the theatrical season ma-
ny attempts will be made to injure you, by
means of newspapercritioisms. I feel foryou,
have many enemies, particularly in the
ThmKre \ weekly publication (printed at No.
4, Charles-Street) may assist you. It is not
the Editor's intention to crlticue generally on
the performers ; but sh add an attack be made,
it can be answered in your favour 7Yie sub-
sc iption isfve dollars uye-v t the paper is cir-
cuiatetlall over the continent," he Sic
" Beatrice Ironside"
Could I have anticipated so iniam ius an at-
tack, I would not have to reg et having
mislaid tbis letter. It was impossible to
foresee that an accomplished la ly, and a
Translator too, could have behaved ttius : but
for the satisfaction of anv person wno doubts
my word, 1 will make aff iavit.
When 1 li'»t heard of t "is would be criticism,
I inquired who «rt h ? a.d was answered
Mrs. A —. On seeing the " O iserier," which
contained it, perceived the ficticious tit'e of the
editor; which brought to my recollection the
letter I had received. I im nediately called at
the printing office to i.tq lire further, before I
w mid publish this—when I found the number
and every other circumstance accord with the
letter. Beatrice is not sorry I did not sub-
scribe ; for no doubt she has made more by her
scurrilous stuff than the five dollars she appli-
ed for--as nd my eneohies (with whom she
seems to be so well acquainted) if not: b eatls,
w 11 soon become subscribers to the " Obser-
ver."
I never have, nor will I, buy praise ; r.or
do the^ee-Ve attempts to injure ine trouble me
in the least. So long as the audience, assem-
bled to witness my performance, b -stow on me
their approbation, I shall laugh at Beatrice
and her accomplices.
