Brown to the editors of the Gazette, dated
La Vera Crux Sept. 30. —" Capt. Weeks,
of the schr. Derne, of Baltimore, inlat. 28,
long. 69 fell in with the wreck of the
schr Eliza, from Philadelphia bound to
St. Jago de Cuba—he hiok one man off the
¦wreck, nearly exhausted, having had no
Sustenance for 5 days. This man supposes
t: >e ret of the crew nvist have been 1st.
The schr. lost her rudder while scudding
in a jjale, hen she immediately broached to,
and falling into the trough of the sea cap
S zed. This sailor says he never saw any
of the crew after the veseel upset, except
the mate ; and he held on tor two days, but,
from fatigue and weakness, left his hold
and perished."

ed from a variety of the British ships of
war, who have, in almost every instance
that we have heard of lately, treated our
captains with marked politeness. One of
them asked, from whence proceeds this un-
usunl politeness ? To which the British of-
ficer replied, Ne-v Orders ! One of our cap-
tains was told in Jamaica, that they had ne*
orders, which enjoined thtm not to press an
American who had a protection ; and he
adds, that it was observed, that even the
British officers did not search or even enter
the American vessels in Jamaica, to look

ry was done to persons or property, I re-
joice that not a drop of blood has been shed,
ft would have rendered me unhappy indeed,
had a single individual lost his life, while
he confined himself to the amusement of at-
tending my effigy to the funeral pile'.

Brown, a valuable member of the Society

fruit, Robert Barry Sept 24, lat. 32 1-2
long. 40 1 2, experienced a severe gale,
had his deck swept of every thing—lost
two men overboard.
The 3hnish schr. Antoinette, Hurst,
from St. Domiii ;o f. r Baltimore, had Deen
captured by the British and sent to Jamaica.
The brig Joseph, Murphey, and schr.
Linnet, Darnell, hence to Jamaica, have
been captured by the French, and sent into
St. Jago.
The schr. Merchant, McRae, from Ha-
vana for Baltimore, was spoke c. days since,
60 miles southward of cape Henry, in 25
fathoms water, out 10 days.
