THEATRICAL.
The managers of our theatre have got np
the tragedy of Gnsta-vus Visa, bv Brook
for this evening : a piece justly celebrated
for the genuine sentiments of liberty it
breathes in every page.
This piece had been long banished from
the British stajje, as containinc? too pure a
democratic spirit, to he suitable to the t.iste
of the government that of country, untill it
•was, some time sinre, brought forward by
the celebrated Charles James Fox. deceased
— ho after pinning those branches loo lux-
urient in patriotism for thai climate, and
¦suiting it lo the palate of the dramatic licen-
ser, had it represented on the London
staffc " shorn of it! beams"—but still retain-
in. sufficient attract! n to assemble croucled
li u es. Before an Americ. n audience it
¦will, this evening, appear in its original
garb ; and we doubt not of its exciting a
.general interest from its speaking home to
the feelings of every lover of his c untry.
It will be succeeded by a new musical af-
terpiece, called the * Soldier's Return,' ne-
ver perForraid m America. As it will have
the hole strength of the company. lherg
can be no doubt of its Letng favotably receiv-
ed.
It is but justice to the managers to ob-
serve, that they have spared neither trouble
liorexpence in bringing lorward pieces both
splendid and novel for the entertainment of
Che town—and we are much concerned that
the unusual severity of the weather has pre-
heated their remuneration. SENEX.
• iiows: Resolved, rrtiat it shall be lawful i
for the President of the U. S. to obtain by j
purchase at a reasonable price, for the e.se of I
the public, the exclusive right to the Systeni I
invented by Sir James Jay, and s ibfflil ted by ,
him to the executive department : provided,
that in the opinion of the President it shall
be of public utility and importance to possess
the same. [The System here mentioned, is,
the secret of preparing Sympathetic Ink^
which is stated to have beer, of essential
service dm in,r the revolutionary war.] .\fter
some discussion, the watt token on
agreeing to the re-ohition, and it w:,s carried
in the affirmative, Ayes SO, noes 48. The
committee of the.whole then rose, and re-
ported their agreement to the resolution ;
and on the motion to concur, Mr. 0. Ft. Wil-
liams, after remarking that the decision
made in committee of the Whole was novel
and unprecedented, called for the ayes and
noes : They were accordingly taken, and
the resolution was agreed to, ayes si, noes
33. The resolution was referred to a select
committee for the purpose of bringing in a
bill.
The principal objections to this resolution
were, that there was no certainty of this
invention being still a secret, orthat it would
hereafter remain so ; that even if it were, it
would be of li'tlo use, as it might be disco-
vered, and as there were other and better
methods of secret communication ; and that
the house were voting away the public mo-
ney, without knowing for what purpose.. —
O i he other hand it was argued, that the
house might be satisfied as to the composition
being yet a secret, and that they might, de-
mand security for its being kept so ; that
the use of it had been of great service to
Gen. Washingson, during the revolutionary
w ar ; that if we did not avail ourselves of it,
some Other nation might get possession of
it ; and, that its value might be ixed by the
bill 0 be brought in.
Mr. Van Cortlandt presented a memorial
from Peter Landais, praying compensation
for services performed 'luring the revoluti-
on. Referred to the co* mil tee of claims.
The lious; then adjpurntd a little before
two o'clock.
