| ] AMENDMENTS. ft qf\ the constitution of the United States, having been ratified by the legislatures of nine states, are equally obligatory with the cons-til tion itself. I. Congress shall make no law respecting ancs- tabiishment of religion, or prohibiting the free ex- eicis^ thereof, or abridging the freedom ot speech or the press ; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a. redress of g ievanees. II. A well regulated militia being necessary to t'be curity of ;i free state, the right of the people kcop and bear arms shall not be infringed III. Mo sodier sha 1? in time of peace, be quar- tered" in any house, without the consent of the own- r, nor in any time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law* IV. The right of the people to be secure in their pe sons, houses, papers and eifects, a ainst unrea- sonab e searehes and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue but upon probable cause, supported b\ oath or affirmation, and parti- cularly desci ibing the p ace to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. V. No person sba 1 be held to answer for a capi- tal or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a pre- sentment; or indictment of a grand jury, excepting eases arising in the land or naval forces, or in th militia when in actual se vice, in time of war or public danger ; nor shall any per be subject,, for the same offence, to be twice put in jeopardy o life or limb ; nor shall be compelled in any crimi- nal case, to be witness acrainst himself; nor be di - |
