Journal Entry for 1997/07/22

What a morning! After searching through the 1798 Tax Records for Baltimore City (note there is another volume that includes D.C. and this the same information but the name looks like Captain Beaach instead of Beall) I saw that a Mrs. Clark on Petticoat Lane lived in a dwelling owned by a Captain Beall. I am pretty sure that this is Thomas K. Beale because his land records in Baltimore County demonstrate that he owned property on Bond and Eden Streerts adjacent to Petticoat Lane and his name appers under various spelling including Thoms K. Beall as in the Chancery Record Index. The dwelling house could have been built facing petticoat Lane (which no longer exists but is also referred to as Petticoat Alley in some places). Then I entered Captain Beall in the 1783 Tax List to find him and I found one Captain Thomas Beall, son of Samuel. My hopes were raise because I noted that in the 1790 Census a Samual Beal is listed as living in Baltimore County BUT the Thomas Beall that appears in the Maryland State Papers is probably not my Thomas K. Beale for several reasons.

1. His wife is named as Verlinda Magruder Beall. Although she is dead by 1799 (when Thomas K mariies Isabella, no other wife is mentioned.

2. Thomas Beall of Samuel goes on to found and lay out the Cumberland section of Alleghany County. He dies in 1823. The Chancery Records involving Thomas K. Beale mentioned that he moved to Washginton City in 1801 and appear to have trouble tracking him down. If he was the son of samuel would it have been so hard to find him?

As a result, I conclude that this is probably not him but am not completely sure because his wife does die by 1799 (although no specific date given in The History of Alleghany County)
