Dr T gave a caharacter. Joe engaged in fetching wood, the man who brought it all this winter having declined handling anymore. Dr Murray called after dinner for an answer to the letter he brought up. Dr T read in the Lounger(?) an alphabetical collection of anecdotes historical &c Mr Charles JOnes called about taking a couple of mares or sires. staid tea
Wed 2Warm& windy. Went after breakfast to see MR Forrest who is confirmed with very bad sore eyes. Thence to Mrs Daltons and home. Dr T at the office all morning being obliged to go to the Capitol called at Mr Laws who went yesterday to Mt Vernon called also to see Mr Forrest. When he returned went to see Mres Burnes to ask her to let him have a log of maplewood, that her people had cut down. When he returned wrote a letter to Mr Peterson, which he took to the post office but finding Mr Munroe's family gone to bed, he went on to the tavern to see mr POwers. Being late when he returned we went to bed. Received a letter from Mr Stoddert requesting a design for the medal voted to Capt Truxton by the Congress.
Thursday 3 Windy, Drizzly, Farm. Dr T wrote the letter(over again) to Mr Peterson. Set off about twelve o'clock for the farm were a long time coming as the roads tho not generally bad, have many rough & deep places. After (illeg). Mrs Washington at Mt VErnon had mentioned DR T to them & he came to request him to go to Leesburg (thirty miles off in Virgina) to see they meant to take her to MT Vernon but she had got that far to her sisters (Mrs Ball)& could not proceed. Dr T does not practice physic but could not refuse to go. He said all night.
Friday 4th Cloudy-windy some rain& warm Thunder and LIghtning in the evening with rain.Rose early to have breakfast got for the Gentleman Dr T not well. THey set off about eighto'clock & just after they went there was a heavy shower it soon cleared up. Sent Joe to town to fetch up the two English mares. Amama and I netting a pair of window blinds-as the ground is wet & I am still poorly with a cold, could not walk about much.
Saturday 5th Hazy in the morning- a sever gust in the evening Working, readingetc. ground to wet to walk Rumbling thunder during the day Very uncommen to have so much lightning so early in the spring.
Sunday 6th heavy clouds wind& rain. Sent Joe to town to fetch Dr T's saddle & the newspapers. About dinner time a violent gust of wind succeeded by rain Dr T came home abiout an hour after we dined. round about all the way in the rain. About twenty miles off he was in the storm of lightning wond, rain & hail he came without waiting upwards of thirty miles & had to gord the creek at Seneca which was high & constatnly rising, in consequence of the back water of the Potomac (which had risen surprisingly) running in to it. The water run over the back of his horse& unto the top of his boots. he had a disagreeable & dreary ride. In the evening, Mr Polock& Mr MUnroe called they came over from Mr P's farm which adjoins ours-they staid tea-mentiond that a tree was struck behind his house in the city.
Monday 7th Clear, windy, and cold. Dr T set off immediately after breakfast to attend the office. Hired an old Negro Man (little Joe's Father) to work in the garden &c for a month @6$. Dr T returned about two o'cock without going to the office having been detained longer than he expected by his business in Georgetown. Sent Joe to town in the afternoon for clover & fish, etc.
Tuesday *th windy& very warm quite sultry. Dr T went to the woods to direct what trees ought to be cut down one of the men he engaged to make fwences Mr James behaved insolently and Dr T forbid his doing any more. Mr BEall still continues. Joe was hauling all day with the carriage mares rails for the fence ast the road. Dr T hired an Irishman for a month @ 12$ to plant trees ditch &work in the garden. Planted this afternoon three pair trees& seven peach trees.
Wed 9th Cool& windy. Dr T had some more trees planted out & made asparagus beds. Sent Joe to town in the afternoon (hauling rails in the morning) to get Fish & Clover seed he could not get them first day he was. He returned late with fish (400 herring& 3 shadfox & illeg) but could get no clover seed. BRought a letter from GEorgetown Esq Philadelphia and one from Mr Paterson in Baltimore
Thurs 10 windy, moderate rain, cloudy. Sent Joe off to Alexandria with a note to MR POrter to get Clover feed & one to MR HAwthorne in case of his absence . Sent Lear a letter & some seeds left here by mr Hammond for Col Lear to the care of Col Gilpin. Mama wrote also Mr J SEmmes who owes her money -Dr T had the asparagus beds finished got the roots from Genl FOrrest and had some peach trees planted (18 in all)
Friday 11 Fine day. Joe returned with one bush clover seeds send by Mr Hawthorne price 15$, brought up the Newspapers but no no letters. Dr T planted peach stones. The cherry& peach&plum trees in full blossom. The nectarins trees removed last spring also in bloomTHe carriage mares hauled rails all day.
Saturday 12 Rainy. Sent in the morning to invite MR& Mrs Digges & the miss Blakes to dine with us tomorrow The old people will come but the young Ladies are in the City . Sent Joe to MR. JOnes to get some wheat ground & a note to invite him & his sisters to dinner tomorrow. He was on his way here & met the Servt. He staid to dinner & Dr T and he made a bargain respecting two mares. which Mr Jones is to keep upon halves. The Sorrel mare & a young mare Mr Brent now has. As soon as Joe returned from the mill, sent him to wotn, to get Coffee salt&etc and some plates, knives, and forks. He returned late at Night brought what he was sent for and the newspapers. The Congress have voted 15000$ to furnish the presidents house, 10000$ to pave some parts,9000 to furnish the capital, 5000$ to purchase books & 1000$ for the president's expenses in removing & a quarter salaries extra to all the Clerks. It had not passed the senate but it is supposed there will be a large majority in favor of it.
Easter Sunday13th Windy, rainy,showers. The English mare foaled, has a colt. Mr&Mrs Digges came but the weather prevented Mr Jones & family as they live further off. They went home about 6 o'clock.
Mon 14 Windy&cold. After breakfast Dr T went to town, we intended to have gone too but there had been so much rain we thought the roads would be very bad. The people have holidays.Dr ZT returned late in the evening, was asked to dinner at several places but declined expecting to be detained so long he wrote Mr Stoddert and to Mr Barry inclosing a draft on Mr Peterson for 170$ to repay money advancing Mr Barry's corresponent in Norfolk to pay the expenses of the English horses Nov last.
Tues 15th Fine day City. First thing in the morning hears that the Medley mare had foaled. She has a dun color Colt. After rbeakfast we set off to come to town, found the roads very bad in consequence of so much rain had to get out of the carriage three times, got to the City about eleven o'clock. he went to the capitol returned to dinner about three. After dinner brought Mr Powers, Lovel, King, they sat till Mr Charles Lownes& Mr Lloyd came when finding Dr T engaged they went. Mr lownes brought a letter from Mr. Buchanan &Courtenay holers of Dr T's bill for $448.15 sterling, mentioning that they would take his notes @75 days for the whole amount & damages15 percent. Mr Lownes having written them Dr T expected remittances from Tortola& that he had written to his father in law immediately on hearing that his Bill on Chorley was protested. Mr Dalton called for a deed that Dr T executedmentioned that in (illeg) had four fine Lombardy for us & would take them up tomorrow.Dr T went to see MR. Munroe but he was not at home, went thence to Mr Lovels to see a clock he has for slae which he asks twn guineas returned about nine o'clock.
Wed 16th Fine day. Joe went early in the morning to bring some culling & Lombards from Mr Tannign. with a horse & cart.Mr Deblois sent the four trees. Mr King came with Dr T to marjk the plces for them before MR Blodgets house in which we live. Got a Negro man to dig holesand Dr T went down to get MR LAw to endorse his note to be put into the Bank(600$) which was sent as soon as he returned. After dinner he went to the office a shor time, then returned& asked the man to plant the trees, four had roots, two without had good would put in & watered them. Dr T received a note from Mr Laws inclosing an order on Mr Barry at twenty days, for the same money which Dr T had on the 14th sent an order on Mr Paterson for which he had not received when he put his letters in the post office. Mr Law wished to have, part of it immediately, as he wished to pay money into Bank. Dr T received a letter from Mr Bladwell New York one from MR Blodget Wrote his father in law sent it to Mr Robb Baltimore Gave Joe directions with a letter to Mr Tayloe's Manager at Navy Yard to fetch the filly, exchanged for the 3 y old sorrels.
Thursday 17th Very fine day. Joe went on one of the carraige mares very early. Mr Laws boy came with a Note. Dr T borrowed of Mr HArbough the money to lend him. After breakfast Dr T went to his farm with Mr Powers. Mama and I went to see Mrs Munroes who has a son. Mr LAw came in he was waiting for the Post he received money and sent what was borrowed to MR BArbough-came here& took a cold dinner with us. Dr T& MR Powers returned here about dark with a letter from Mr Barry acknowledging the receipt of money from Mr Peterson.
Friday 18th Very Fine day. Dr T went out after breakfast I netting & Mama quilting. Mr Meredith & Mr Caldwell left a letter at the office for the Commisioners requesting them to meet them tommorrow, they are to rent (illeg) the War & Navy office as the Treasure office only will be ready by the time it will be wanted. I (illeg) two copies of Dr T's letter to his father in law, he sent one to Norfolk under cover by Messrs Lauria and Telfer. After dinner Mr Lownes & Lloyd called. Dr T went with them to see the horse Punet-agreed to call on Mr Lownes on Sunday. Mr Hien(?) sent up the ass that was sent to him. MR Young sent home the Jack he was to have kept. In the evening Mama and I walked out a little way and returned thinking Dr T would come home for dinner had left him but he did not till we sent him to ta. He was not well in consequence of having walked in the sun a good deal in the morning - went to bed pretty early.
Saturday 19th warm & hazy. Rose early old Mr Gregg called to let us know that two friends intended to preach in GEorgetown. Dr T could not go as he had to ttend the office and we dod not wish to walk so far. After breakfast MAma and I set off to walk to our wooden house onn Sq 33. saw Miss Whetcroft as went a long invited her to walk withg us, we went first to Mrs Knapps. We set there a little while & she also joined us. We went to the house, returned to Mrs Knapps sat till we were rested & then came home. Found Joe had returned & brought the fillyAfter dinner Dr T went to the capitol. MR Polock cousin brought a parcell which Mr Meredith had been the Nearer from Philadelphia and it contained two almanacs, "The Secret of Pirarro" which I asked Mr Wm Blodget to purchase for me & some music, a present from his father. Dr T returned & said he was going to Mr Fitzhughs and should return in the morning. that MR LAw had gone about an hour before. Joe was sent to the farm with Jack, playd, worked, & read all afternoon & evening.
Sunday 20th Warm & very windy. MR Peter called after breakfast while he was here Joe came with the four Jennies & the English mare. Dr T came hme about eleven, put on clean Cloaths and went again immediately to call on MR Lownes went thence to Genl Forrests to dine in company with Mr Meredith & Mr Caldwell. MRs Ray called to see us. After dinner MAma and I walked to Mr Polocks. Mrs & Miss Scott came threre to tea. Dr T called for us came home about nine o'clock A letter from (illeg) bought by a Mr Bryson in the morning.
Mon 21 Cloudy Rainery. MR Law called. Dr T went to the office. Gave Mr LAw a written promise to mortgage his farm if Mr Law wished it, as security to him for his endorsing the Notes in Bank. After dinner Dr T went out, did not return till about ten o'clock.
Tuesday 22 Windy & cool. After breakfast Mr Rchd Forrest called while we were at our farm he went with his family to his father in laws in Marlboro. Dr T at the office all the morning went out again after dinner did not return until late said he had been to see Mr Oakley. Mr Forrest came & drank tea with us Joe went off early this morning with the Jennies to Baltimore rode one of the carriage mares.
Wed 23 Dr T went to the office. Mr Lownes came to dinner they went out after dinner & returned to tea Dr T engaged in considering about a plan for the Chirch in Baltimore-sent a negro Man Jerry to the farm for the Medley Mare & Lownes filly.Dr T sent word to the Manager to send the Sorrel mare to Mr JOnes. Mr Tench Ringgold took the English mare away.
Thurs 24 Fine day. Dr T went out after breakfast did not return until dinner. Dr T went out again. Mr Forrest called Mama and I went as far as Mr Tayloe's house, were going to MRs Knapps but heard from Mrs Brooks Negroes that seh was not at home, returned & called at Mrs Munroes where Mrs Knapps was, found there also Dr T who was sitting with Mr Knapp & Mr Dobbin from Annapolis. THe Gentleman went out we staid pretty lat expecting Dr T would return but found he did not come &n Mr Munroe walked home with us. HE did not come in till I suppose ten o'clock. Read ni Newspapers which Mr Munroe lent us. Joe returned about four o'clock
Friday 25th womdy but not cold. Rose about seven o'clock Before we had breakfast a gentleman called who is staying at Mr Laws to request that Dr T give him a little Indian Jerk to draw a landscape for Mr LAw-he is in the English army & going to Canada. A strange kind of mad body his name is Wilcox. After breakfast Dr T went to give some directions at he PResidents Garden when he returned MR Peter called. We then walked accompanied by Mr Forrst who dined with us, first to see the Capitol & thence to Mr Laws where we staid tea. walked home, & were extremely fatigued.Sent six walnut (illeg) to Mr Mason in Georgetown.
Saturday 26th Windy& stormy. A boy came from the farm to (illeg) were illeg. Sent up the B filley to go to Mr Jones. Dr T went to the office. I helped Mama to quilt in the morning After dinner some gentlman called in a carriage, two & brought letters from MR Dawson from Mr Stoddertn and Mr Barnes from Mr Jeferson. Dr T invited them in & shewed them the plats of the Capitol (Illeg) In the morning Dr T rented our house in Georgetown to Mr Chandler for illeg$ per year he to remove at a months notice if we sell it. Dr T engaged in planning the church for Baltimore. MR BRent called in the evening Old MR KIng came to tea.
Sunday 27th A very fine day.. Dr T drawing at the Church and I reading. Went after dinner to MR peters- took MrsPeter into GEorge Town with us to see Mrs Dorsey. Dt T went on solitary (?) called to see the Gentleman from (illrg) Ringgold called at Mr Peters Mr JOhnsons family have moved into the adjoining house they gave 500$for rent. Messrs (illeg) and Mrs Helen's littlebaby for us to see. Mrs JOhnson is gone to Philadelphia to visit Mrs Adams (illeg). Dr T went to see again the fillies which had been driven down here to pasture. could not find them. (illeg) who staid out all night that having not taken up a spade that they must be driven strong again if gone to the farm.
Mon 28th A fine day. After rbeakfast Dr T went to the office Had the Carriage after dinner, left Dr T at the capitol, went to the Shop on New JErsey Avenue, returned took him in again, he stopped at Tunnicliffs Tavern to see Mr LAw who was thre with some strangers MEss Dawson & etc were at the door. Dr T returned then to Mr Laws who invited them to dinner at (illeg) We then went to the Navy Yard. I was much surprised to see so little done after six months of work. Returned home before six oclock Dr t went some where did not return till very late.
Sunday 29th (illeg) Mr Lownes came & Dr T gave his note payale six months for Messrs LEar, Buchannan & Courtneay Buchanaan for $2358..43. being the amountof the protested bill with damages & interest. Dr T went ot the office. at two oclock (illeg) to the ferry to see a pair of (illeg) which he purchased for $200 and gave his note payable in December next. After dinner MRs Knapp and MRs Whitecroft came in they till tea (illeg) Anapolis stage came bye & we went to Mrs Shaw their sister in law was in it. Dr T went out and did not return till tea
Monday 30I netting in the morning for a (illeg) Cloak. Joe went off early with the mules to the farm. illeg called after dinne and said Mr Law hadcome here yesterday to invite MAma and I to dinner today but that he had forgot it and that Mrs Peter wished to go but did not like to ride on horseback- we agreed to go if he would send his (illeg) to drive our carriage. hewent and told MRs Peter that we would send for her, she was feeling teribly and there a man to drive but that wrote a note to me saying she could not go which he did not deliver so I sent the carriage for her. She did not come. Mr Law staid here while a servt went to town to ask if the Gentleman were coming to his house to dinner. they had business there & declined. We wnet about three. Dr Caffrey and Mr Barry dined there. Joe came down to drive us home we arrived about dark. Dr T went out stairs till about nine. I read the newspaper went to bed The Bills respecting the City Paper with endorsement.
