Thurs May 1 Gloomy and Cloudy rain and a gust about noon. After breakfast set out for the farm Dr T on horseback roads very good. We got there about 12'oclock. Dr T came about an hour after having waited a long time under a shed in the hopes the rain would ease but as there did not appear to be any chance fit, he rode thro it & came in dripping wet & so as to be obliged to change his cloaths. Read in an European Magazine all the evening while we worked. IT rained almost constantly all the afternoon thunder & lightning about three and late into the evening (?).

Fri May 2 Fine clear dry cool Rose early Mr Forrest came after breakfast on his way to the Great Falls Jerry came with the Midly Mare & the five fillies. BRought a letter from G Turner Esq Philadelphia mentioning that Mr Elvivee agreed to take lot Sq 233-for 600$ but could not pay cash sent his noters @ 60 and 90 days. Dr T wrote an answer to W Turner enclosing a letter to his Aunt in Lancaster in England and a copy of one before mentioned to his father in law. Mr O'reiley sent back the Bay Dr T let him have some time ago, as he behaved dishonestly. Joe hauling rails all day with the carriage mares. heard within these few days that unfortunately one of them is with foal. Dr T all ady planting out chestnuts in a square of the garden- Mr F called again in the afternoon

Saturday 3.A fine day.Dr T made the man plant the reaineder of the Chestnuts (which in the fall had been put altogether in a hole in the field). Carriage Mares hauling post and rails all day.

Sunday 4th Very fine day. WAlked about road&c Dr T grafted some Gloucester Hickory nuts on the commmon hicjory in the (illeg) Expected Mr Ringgold and MR Powers but they did not come after dinner. Dr T rode to MR JOnes came home before dark. A stranger or a flower called here "the flooding (illeg) in the golden basin" In England called Lady's Slipper from its form its generally yellow but the people say there are white & red & white striped ones in some of the woods.

Monday 5th: Fine day Cool/City. Set out after breakfast to come to town. Dr T rode the young English mare. We forgot to bring our keys and had to stop on the road about three miles from the farm while the servant went back for them. had a magazine & read the while. Dr T went on as he had to stop at Genl Forrests Got home about eleven oclock. Dr T received 3 letters from MR Maury with the Bills invoice &c of the things we sent for to Liverpool in March 1799. he had waited for an opporunity to Alexandria. They arrived in the success. Boy brought down the Medley mare & little Forrest filly but going to haul rails till Friday morning MR Forrest called abiout dinner time went to the office to get MR KIng to (illeg) off his lot on 254 where he is going to build. We went over to his house toward evening and he walked with us to the PResident's House Dr T joined us on the way, we returned to tea. Dr T brought (illeg).

Sunday 6th fine day. MR LAW called in the morning. MR Forrest came to breakfast borrowed a saddle to go to Annapolis. Began digging his cellar this morning Dr T went to the Office. Received an invitation to tea at Mr LAws for (illeg) sent an exuse- thought it was for tomorrow but should nothave gone at any rate.

[At dinner time Dr T came with Dr King & his uncle to the door, invited them to dinner but they declined- took Dr Ray to see a poor neighbor MR Cooke who is very ill. We sent one of our women to set with his wife last night & and sent them a little wine , some butter, and some soup. Dr T went to the office to write. Came when I sent for him to tea.[She boxes this and labels it Wednesday] Mr knapp called Dr T was out till late at night assisting to sick the medley mare as he did not wish her to stay out all night, found her walking a long time.

Wednesday 9th rained in the morning, cloudy, a little rain during the day Rain and gust in the evening. Dr T received by the Southern Mail a letter from Mr Tayloe , addressed from Mr KErr, enclosing the papers sent him with an (illeg) to be executed at the Customs House in GEorgetown. Dr T went but there is so little to do there that he could find nobody but a little boy to do it before. Inclosed it to Mr Kerr & gave it to Captain Ardary who is to bring up the thing HE wrote MR TAyloe- as I cannot always write every day I may now & then make a mistake it was to day not yesterday thar Dr MAy called. Received an invitation to MR Scotts to tea could not go. Dr T copied over a long letter to MR Jefferson. and wrote to MR Paterson Baltm9re and sent them by the post

Thursday 8th Beautiful rained much of the night. Dr T went to the office. I copied his letter to MR JEfferson into a book. Finished the trimming for my muslin cloak. & enlarged my net shawl. Walked out after dinner went to see MRs Munroe staid to tea. Dr T came after talking some time to Beall about the fwence. Near ninec oclock we were about leaving MR Munroess Mr Knapp sent up word that there were some things landed at the Wharf near their house. BEing a fine moonlight night Dr T got a cart a went to have them brought upMama and I got home at ten oclock. I began to net a light pink floss sil veil. When the things spersed them much dissappointed in the Wedgewood ware & think them very dear- the desert set is pretty but not such as I expected as they were not limited in the price. The knives and forks all rusted.

Friday 9th Gloomy & showery Mr Dalton called- Poor Cooke died Dr T went to the office returned anout one oclock MReceived from Mr Jefferson a small pamphlet an appendix to the notes on Virginai respecting the authenticity of the (illeg) of the Indian Chief Logan- Joe came down from the farm brought the cart with a little wood, some vegetables & c. We have five cows calved nearly about the same time and all bull calves. Dr T got someinoculating matter from Dr May and inoculated Joe a negro man William & Betty bound children and Bet Lucys child a negro nearly six months old. Dr T went to the Capitol in the Carriage which was going to the clacksmiths to be (repaired?). returned to tea- Mr DerMott called to consult about Cooke's funera; - mentioend that he raised a subscription for his widow and that they wished to send his deranged mother to the poor house.

Saturday 10 gloomy & rainy. ORdered the carriage to go to Georgetown Dr T went out met MR Peter who invited us to dinnerDr T returned . Mama and I went to Georgetown and left him drawing. we declined going to dinner but Dr T went. I did not wish the carriage horses to be used as we meant to set off for Marlbro in the morning. Mr R Forrest called lent him a lanthorn & umbrella to go home as it rained & was very dark. Dr T came home about none oclock he rode the English mare which just on his leaving Mr PEters fell down an threw him off in a very dangerous manner but he was fortunately not hurt. She wanted to tram into Mr JOhnsons yard and the side he wished to turn her being that of her Blind eye & a dog barking at the instant were the causes of her falling.

Sunday 11th Rained in the morning but cleared up afterwards. When we rose we thought we should not have been able to take our intended jounrey but it began to clear, we had breakfast & set off about ten oclock. Called for Mr Forrest who accompanied us on horseback. We crossed the Eastern Branch ferry on the other side of which many beautiful eminences from which are fine prosepects of the City, Georgetown, Alexandria &c. The roads in general very good- two pretty seats on the roand near the town. Mr Digges & Mr Magruder arrived about three oclock at MR Crawfords, MR Forrests fathers he lives on an eminnence that overlooks the town which is a near pretty little place- Every house has a large garden & the number of Locusts and weeping willows that are painted about with the genderal vendue gives it a very pkleasant appearance. It is the place where the courts are held- but it is ceclining rather than increasing they are just beginning a new court house which is huge and handsome. The wester branch of the Potomac which is only navagable for bateaux and small craft has a romantic & wild appearance. We arrived just as the family were at dinnerIn the afternoon we walked about with Mrs F.

Monday 12 warm day. MR Forrest Dr T & Mr Crawford set out about ten oclock to go to a sale about four miles form Marlboro we intended to have accompanied them but the roads were very bad for a carriage. We wished to purchase a negro boy was one reason of our taking this trip. MR FOrrest walked with us to town which adjoins MR Crawfords went to tow or three shops there (illrg) appled the the best belonged to a free NEfro man who is doing very well, an owning the house & lot in which he lives & maintains a large family decently and is generally respected. The gentleman returned & just after we had set down to dinner Dr T purchased a negro man for $400 Walked on the (illrg) showed MR C's house which are very pretty for inland situations.

Tueday 13 Very warm. Rose early after breakfast as were about setting off. Bishop Clagett arrived- he came inteding to ride off with Mr Crawford to our City where is going to (illeg) but MR Crawford deferred going, as MR Forrest was not well. The bishop rode on horesback in a (illeg) wth us. Mr C Forrest set off for Annapolis. Dr T invited to dinner tomorrow the BIshop & MR Crawford stopped at Tunnicliffs too see if the sale of chimnie paises had commensed but it was deffered while Dr T went in to look at them- sent JOe to invite MR & Mrs law to dinner- got home about one oclock It was a very warm riding- Mama was very poorly and obliged to go to bed immediately after tea. MRs Munroe & Shaw & Miss whitecroft called- I played for them some tim,e. In the afternnon sent Joe to town to the mill and to Mr peters to invite to dinner. He came while we were absent to drink tea with us. M(illeg) from Philadelphia called and l;eft a note went to bed about ten oclock.

Wed May 14th Very fine day. Rose pretty early Mama better but not well. all the morning preparing for dinner. MR Crawford arrived about one oclock. Mr Law MR & MRs Peter, & Bishop Clagett MR White dined with us. DR T went to the presidents house with Mr C before dinnre Mrs P had our carriage and her servant drove it. I received a letter from Mrs Triviary at Virginia. After dinner I walked with Mr & Mrs P to tghe executive office & president's house. When we returned we found old Gov Johnson & Mr J Johnson at our house they walked diwn to tea. MRs Johnson has just returned from Philadelphia where she has been with her son on a visit to the PResidents House Mr J Adams Jun married the 2nd Miss Johnson. Mr Johnson is appointed Stamp Master with a salary of 2000$ After tea ordered the carriage for them to go home. Mr Crawford staid all night

Thursday 15th Fine day Warm. Mr Crawford rose very early and went to Georgetown Dr T inoculated the people again as the thought they had not taken the infection. Sent Joe off to fetch the Jenny which came from Alexandria, we have not heard of her since we came from the farm last. Breakfast at eight oclock Dr T wrote to the Gentleman who had the direction of the sale near Marlbro that he could not take the man (wjo came yesterday) and who is not in health (having a rupture) WEnt to the office- means to senf him in the afternoon. About two oclock Dr came home with Capt Tingley they went together to dinner at MR Laws we were invited but Joe was not here to drive the carriage A squall of wind which continied some time. with a little rain. Sent a horse by John for Dr T to come home. Just as he came in MR Darnall (deputy sheriff) came to get a deed acknowledged Dr T went out to help the man to seek the horses which had gone further than usual in consequence of the storm.

Friday 16 VEry fine. Dr Crawford whom Dr T dined with at Mr Laws came to breakfast stiad to dinner we sent & invited Mr & MRs KNapp who came. Sent a note to MRs LAw inviter her & Mrs Tingley & the gentleman to tea they excused themselves. Sent to invite Mr Munroes family. Mr Shaw came also Mr BRent. In the evening Mr Pollack & MR Fitzhugh called in-Staid till eleven oclock. Dr Crawford staid all night- He seemed very okeased with his reception-altogether a pleasant day.

Saturday 17 drizzly. Went to Georgetown took Dr Crawford with us introduced him to Dr Weins in the steert & left him there. Went to Mrs Dorsey to see Miss Dorsey & Miss Chase who are there on a visit. Returned took Dr T in and went to the Capitol- staid there a litlle, left and went to Mr Laws in to visit Mrs Tingley. Mr L & Capt T went by to Georgetown in the morning. Took Dr T in again on our return got home about two oclock raining very fast. Dr Crawford came to dinner went away soon after- Sent to GEorgetown basket containing nearly half the dinner set and all the desert set except four (club compotiers0 and two baskets with Hands to be put into Mr Whann's store for sale. THey came too high as they did answer my wishes - and I found by washing that the gilding was not burnt but only brandished. Dr T received a letter from w Marlbury Philadelphia. Miss Polocks came to tea. Afterwards went with them to Mrs Munroes. Dr T came for the parlor key to get Dr Crawfords tunck as he has written him that he should be obliged to return to Baltim ore tomorrow morning. Dr T came back to Mr Munroes & we staid till ten oclock. Very dark night.

Sunday 18th raining in the morning fine day. Reading & writing in the morning Dr T drawing at the Church- Ordered the carriage to take a ride after dinner but when it came there was an appearance of an heavu gust & sent it back. There was a gust of wind & a little rain. IN the evening we walked out. Met Mr Munroe's family walked as far as Sq 171 with Mr shaw & knapp. We all went to the scales nerar the President house to be weifhted. Dr T weighed 163 lbs and I 106. After we came home Dr T brought in M Powers who staid till near eleven oclock. Mr Fitzhugh called in the morning would not stay to dinner

Monday 19 very pleasant. Dt T went to the office. MRs LAw & Mrs TIngley called about two oclock. they wanted to go to see the Presidents House but as it was too late invited them to come in the afternoon. After dinner Dr T walked to Mr Young's on business. The horeses were engaged in handling wood to fence our lots on Sq 171. Mr & Mrs LAw & Tingley came tho they sent word that they could not- Mrs Law went on to see Mrs Peters to see Mrs Lewis her sister who had jsut arrived from MT Vernon to have her child inoculated. She returned to tea. Mrs Bassert came with her. While we were at tea Mrs Munroe, Shaw& Kett came in Mr Munroe came afterwards. Mrs L&T went away early the rest staid & I played for them some time. Mrs Law invited us to dinner.

Tuesday 20 pleasant but cloady. A boy came from the farm with a fine veal as the compant we expected were not coming- sold all but one of one quarter & the head & feet. About five oclock DrT came in with Genl Davidsin from Annapolis- I was dressing & did not see him. A heavy shower cleared up went to Mrs LAws- met there Mrs Lewis and her cousings Miss Dandridge and Miss Henley. M& Mrs Tingley and Dr May and Mr Whote gone to Mt VErnon with Mrs Lewis in the Boat which brought up the ladies. Mrs Lewis had a fine little girl six months old. Mr Forrest called in the morning At night Dt T wrote to Major Rivardi inclosing some inoculating matter and (illeg) Paterson in letter giving him a receipt.

Wed 21st.Fine day cool a frost last night it is said.Dr T went to the office. Working all the mornign. Boy came from the farm sent him to look for the Jenny intending him to go with it to Mt Vernon sent him back after dinner with directions to come down tomorrow evening. Just as we were going to dinner Col Tem of Bladensburg was passing by. Dr T asked him to inquire about a negro of his which he understood was for sale. he gave him a high character but said he did not wish sell him. HE staid some time- after he went we walked out. Went to MR knapps found there Mr Munroes family MR & Miss BUrnes & Mrs Shaw & Kerr walked home with us we stopt at Mr munroes & sat a little while. Looked over the newspapers and went to bed.

Thursday 22 Cool day Cloudy. Dr t at the office- Mr Forrest came & dined with us aftetr dinner we walked to Mr Johnsons drank tea.there afterwards stopped in to Mr PEters- Mrs Helens child has been inoculated five times & they are not sure that it has had it. IT is a remarkably fine season for it - owing I suppose to the temperature of the (illeg) Joe was out all day searching after the horses- Boy came from the farm BRought some butter&etc. We got home about nine oclock were tired walking and went to bed almost immediately Dr T staid(?) while I read the Newspapers

Friday 23 VEry fine day. Dr T went ot the office. Dr Forrest called While I was engaged writing to Mrs Rivardi. Mrs PEters, Lewis, Miss Henley & Dandrighe called- while they were her Mrs Dorsey, with her aunt & Miss Dorsey & Miss Chase, came & wanted to go with them to the Capitol While they were all here Dr Thornton came home & brought with himMr Fitzhugh of Chatham, Mr HErbert & a Gentleman living in Alexandria. MRs Lewis played one song-I played a little When Mrs Peters&etc went- I roe with MRs Dorsey &c to see the capitol-returned at two oclock they went home. AFter dinner Dr T sent a man to the farm to fetch down the horses which went up there yesterday. Sent Peter (a white boy) in the mornign with the jenny to Mt Vernon Joe went to assist in getting it over the ferry. Dr T in the afternoon went to the Capitol staid till dark. MR Forrest drunk tea with us & MR Wm BRent called in the evening.

Saturday 24th Joe was hauling rails till breakfast time when he broke the cart- Mrs Dorsey sent to invite us to tea but we declined going- Mama And I went to a few shops but to invite Mrs Munroe Mrs KNapp etc to tea. Dr T came about one oclock with MR Claxton door keeper to the Congress who uis empowered to procure all the necessary furniture for the capitol they sent for MR HOban & were consulting respecting the seat for the President of the Senate. MR Forrest dined with us. Returend to tea. Mr & MRs Knapp, MR & Mrs Munroe & MRs Shaw drank tea with - had some pretty good strawberries which I bought in Georgetown the firest we have had except a few sent us which came from Alexandria. Peter returned from MT VErnon & after dining and rsting awhile went to the (farm?) We do not know whether the little begro child & Joe took the small pox as they have had break out- William had it very favoroubly Daniel came at night from the farm with some butter,peas&etc Were obliged to send him away again as it was not right for him to sleep with his wife, as the child may have taken the infection tho its arm only is affected & he might thereby take it to the farm. Dr T received a letter from his aunt. he wrote her today. enclosed to Mr MARlboro who is going to Europe.

Sunday 25th Cloudy & warm. Ordered the carriage over night & set off after breakfast for the farm Saw mrsPEter, & Lewis & the young ladies going to Georgetown to Church. ON the road we heard a noise like a thousands of frogs and concluded they were the cause but after Dr T came to the farm he went into the new orchard & found some of the trees covered with Locusts & that they occasioneed the noise- there is a dreadfuly propsect for farmers The Hessioan Fly is in the wheat & many who expected to make a thousand & 1500 bushels will not have more than make the seed and shoudl the Locusts continue it is supposed they will destroy the corn.After dinner Dr T rode over to MR Jones he was not at home & he soon returned. (illeg) and some of our people caught two owls (horned) in the woods. Joe put them in the BArn

Monday 26th Fine day Rained at night a little thunder. Sent Joe to town with the waggon that it might be ready for him to haul when we return. Sent some wood. He did not return till late at night sold his owls for 11 a piece.

Tueday 27th Coole Pleasant (City) On our way to town called at Genl Forrests saw Mrs Forrest only. Dr T rode on the English Filly which Hoe had driven up last night with the MEdley Mare. Sorrel filly & Miss TayloeMama and I stoped at Mrs Dorsey & at Mr peters on the way home. In the afrernoon MRs Dorsey with Miss D and Miss CHase called and I went with them to seee the RPesidentrs House and the Treadury OFfice they returned and drank tea with us & Dr T and Mr Forrest. Just before the Annapolifs stage stopped and Mr Dorsey came in and staid after tea when he left the ladies walked home. When we came found John the man purchased (illeg) returned - he said his owner accused him of having informed respecting his disease and that he was wondering and had no home. Dr T discharged him before Mr Forrest & gave him a few lines mentioning the circumstances as they really were.

Wednesday 28th Fine day. BEfore we were up MR Peter sent to request Dr T to breakfast with him, he went about eifht oclock and found they had breakfasted, he returned soon but we had done and we had soem broguht for him . Mrs Dalton called. Mr Peter invited Dr T to dinner. & we sent to MRs Dorsey that we would drink tea with her. Dt T walked to MR PEters We wnet about 5 oclocl. Nobody at Mr Doresysbut Dr Worthington. On our return called at MR Peters sat a little while ate some fine duke cherreis that came from MT VErnon. Coming home Dr T stopped at the Post office- did not return home till we had been in bed some time. HE invited Mr PEter & Mr Lewis to dinner tomorrow.

Thursay 29 fine day. Boy bought a veal from the farm-sold part of it. While we were at breakfast, a servant brought word that MR MArbury, Templeman & Deakins would drink tea with us. Engaged all the morning preparing dinner & tea. Mr Law Lewis & PEter came. THe GEntleman walked out after Dinner. Dr T brought with MR O'Reiily & a Mr Honrsnlow (illeg) for singin well- they could not stay to tea. Mr White, MR Munroe& MR HOwe ( a clerk in the genl post off)came to tea. MR MArbury & Templeman came just as the things were removed- & the company were coming down stairs for me to play for them. Mama made tea for them. The gentleman except Mr Marbury and Templeman staid pretty latte.

Friday30th Cloudy & rain BEfore breakfast Joe hauling rails. about noon we went to GEorgetown called at Mrs Dorseys to borrow a gown. Went to Mr Cox's stpre & changed a chintz. got there for a black silk. Mr Forrest came to tea staid all night as it rained Dr T engaged in drawing the church.

Saturday 31st pleasant weather MR Ray called after breakfast. Dr T drawing went about one oclock to call on the attorney genl Charles Lee who passed by with Mr White. Mr Forrest came while we were at dinner. We walked to Pennsylvania Avenue to see what is done towards the pavement there is to be a footway of common foundation stone and a road thrown up with ditches to carry off the water. THis is only to be temporary work. Dr T left us and Mamama and I walked to ou lots. Mr Forrest called in the evening Dr T did not return till rpetty late The whole of this month has been cool and pleasant.
