Sunday June 1st Cloudy rain all day. Having determined last night to fo to Mr Fitzhughs and expecting that tho it rained a little there would only be trifling showes and that it would clear at noon we ordered the carriage and set out about ten oclock We found the roads very bad, great part of the way it continued drizzling and when we got within a 1/2 mile of the house it rained in a turrent and the wind blew very hard. IT is about nine or ten miles from the City. We found Mrs Fitzhugh sick in bed, & Mr F had just set out for town with Genl Lee and a MR Heath. Mrs Jack Thornton was there and Miss Thornton and Fitzhugh. Mrs T advised to try the road by the Rock Creek church- we set out immediately after dinner (tho they invited us to stay all night we knew the roads would not be better in the morning)a boyriding Dr T Rockinghorse mare-till we got within half a mile of the Church we had a dreadful ride, not only from the road being bad, but having to pass thro woods most part of the way, the branches of the trees being full of rain in crushing bye the carriage wet very much, altogether we had a disagreeable ride but got home in good time.

Monday 2nd Fine coll day. After breakfast DR T went to the office. Two men sent by Mr Dinsley came to white wash the plarlor and entry. Dr T came about one ocloc took a (illeg) with Mr Johnston & set off to go to MR C Jones to see a colt which the sorrel mare had. Mr Fitzhugh called but would not stay all night. Dr T came home (?) oclock. The men white washed very badly and mae more dirt than ever was seen by white washing only. Dr T got a letter from Dr Dawson.

Tuesday 3 Cloudy but pleasant. Dr T sent to Mr Dinsely to see the work his men had send. He sent two other men to scrape off the white wash & do it over again. We would have preferred remaining with dirty walls rather than have had so much trouble and dirt. We heard that the President is arrived. Dr T went to the office. He went about one oclock. to Georgetown to wait on the President & brought home Dr May to dinner, whose horse he had rode to town as it was ready & he was in a hurry. Mr White came in to hear the News. THe President intends to receive an adress from the inhabitants of GEorgetown till tomorrow noon. Dr T went out after dinner returned to tea with Dr Cunningham. r Fitzhugh came to stay all night.

Wednesday 4th. Dr T went to the Office. MR Knapp called. I invited him and his wife to tea. Mr Rays servant passing sent to invite them alse. MR Fitzhugh came to dinner. While we were at table Dr T cakked in Dr Balch. MR and Mrs Knapp came early. The President came by about three oclock. Dr T had a horse got ready & with some other gentlmean accompanied him to the Capitol but stopd first at his(underscored) house & the treasury office. HE travels in a chariot (illeg)- and is going to Lodge at Tunnicliffs Tavern on Capitol Hill. Mr & Mrs Ray came to tea and Mr White came with Dr T on their return from the Capitol. DR T and I walked part of the way home with Mr & Mrs Knapp-when we trurnedhe went to the post office to carry a letter & staid for soem time. MR T Johnson called to invite us to tea with his mother tomorrow.

Thursday 5th Fine Day. Dr T went to the office about noon went to the capitol where an address was to be presented from the Citizens of Washington. Dr T went to the Tavern with Mr Dalton walked with the President to the Capitol- the address was presented by Mr dalton. Mr Mason, Knapp, & Capt TIngley called on their return about six oclock. Dr T and I went to Mr JOhnsons Mama would not go not being very well. The President and his secretary Mr SHaw dined there & in large company were invited to tea. but there was not a large party. The President did not come into the drawing room till tea was served and sen immediately after MRs Cranch his wife's nieec went home in the carriage with him. Dr T went to Mr Peters & I followed him. Mr Peter's family were invited to Mrs Johnsons but MR & Mrs Tingley were spending the dau with them and they could not leave her.

Friday 6th fine day. Dr T went to the office. A man came from the farm with (illeg sentence) of plaster of parrisHe brought down butter, cherries, &etc. Dr T went to Georgetown at two oclock to drive by immediately with the Presidents & the inhabitant at Mr Laughlins Tavern. After dinner Mama and I went to Georgetown to a few shops & returned to tea at MR PEtersSent the carriage in for Dr Thornton Dr Weiling went in it to town. The President went away from the dinner before sunst. After we came home Dt T went out and staid out very late.

Saturday 7th. Dr T went to the office returned before one oclock as the President told him he would call at that time to see the plans of the capitol HE did not come by till two oclock and did not stop Dr T went to Genl Forrests where he was invited to meet the president at dinner. The president told him he was so much engaged he had not time to call. They returned early We went to Mr Munroes in the evening saw there Dr Watson a young man come to settle here. Returned home at ten oclock.

Sunday 8trh. Boy came from farm with peas, butter& c HAd the carriage & took wiht us Mrs Munroew to wait on MR & MRs Tingleywent from there to Mr KNapps. they pressed us to stay to dinner which we did & Dr T went in the carriage to dine at Mr Peters with the Presideny. We staid at Mr Knapps till after tea; when we went to Georgetown & called on MRs Dorsey where we found her not well. MR Dorsey & the two young laduies set off early in the morning for Baltimore. On our return called at Mr PEters for Dr T. went in for a little while, found a large company but the president went early in the afternoon to Mr Pattons. came home with some strawberries and went to bed.

Monday 9th Fine day.Sent Joe to town to market. Sent him again to with our Complimets to Mrs H Forrests that we would wait on her in the afternoon. She was out of town HAd the carriage & took Mrs Munroe with us to call on Mrs Chandler & MrsGoulds. we went after tp Mrs Hansons & Lairds. When we came home fround that Dr T was gone to dine at Mr Scotts. After dinner rode doen to see Mrs R Forrest, went thence to Mr DEblois's, Mr Dalton;s family were there. Found Dr T at home when we returned. He went to MR Whites room to call on MR MArshall SEcretary of State. Dr T invited him to lodge with us. THe Commissioners have lent him a room in the Presidents House.

Tuesday 10 Warm Cloudy in the afternoon. Sent Joe with the cart to be mended and to see of Mrs Peter & family would come to tea and if so to call & invite Capt & Mrs Tingley. Had a large stone brought up and fixed at the front stepping stone. Cleaned a couple of Dr T Plaister figures & put them in the drawing room. Dr T received an invitation from the Citizens of Alexandria to dine with the President tomorrow. Mrs Peters sent her servt to drive our carriage Mr & Mrs Lewis Miss Henley & Dandridge came in it. Mrs PEters & the Lewis walked. Captain and MRs Tinglsley and MR Brent came. Mr Peters family walked home after tea we came down stairs and Mrs (?) and I played. They had some pretty good cherries & starberries which came from the farm in the morning. Dr T went in the evening to see Genl Marshall but he had gone to Tunnicliff's Tavern.

Wednesday 11th Warm. Dr T rose pretty early walked out-returned a little before nine to breakfast. ORdered his horse & Mr hoban called to speak about plasetring in the PResidents house.MR small wood about the ditch digging in Pennsylvania Avenue Mr Munroe to get him to sign a check on the bank. He set off about ten to join mr white & mr Marshall with whom he is going to ride to Alexandria. Mama and I went in the evening to take a walk , came home, drank tea. Then went to Mrs Munroes after we had been there a little while, Dr T rode up woth Mrs White Marshall & Law We left Mrs Munroe and came homw ith Mr Law & the Secretary of State, they sat a little while and then went home.There were a hundred people at Alexandria more subscribed & could not get int the room. The above gentleman ame up in Company with trhre President who went to McLaughlins in Georgetown

Thursday 12th Hot & oppressive Dr T went to the office. Mrs Dorsey called to see us. The President went bye to go to Tunnicliffs After dinner Dr T drew a little while at the Church and then went to the capitil. returned a little before dark. Mr Dexter Secretary at WAr arrived todya. Commodore Truxton rode by with Capt Tingsley. Mr & Mrs Forrest stopped at the door for a few minutes on their way home from Georgetown Dr T went out and staid late.

Friday 13th Hot with a breeze high wind in the afternoon with a little rain. Dr T went to the office immediately after dinner set off with MR Hoban to go to Col Jones. I sentr to Mrs Whann's to have the wedgewood ware brought back to put into a store near us - thinking it would be more likely to sell haere at present. Walked to look at the Presidents stable which is just begun near us-it is seve till the piblic and built such as will be suitable to the House on the Square. The President went away this morning.

SaturadayMr Jones came while we were at braeakfast. Dr T not return till about noon. was not well in consequence of his getting very wet in yesterday's rain fell yesterday afternoon whe they were near MR JOnes. Genl Wm Washington and Mr Peter called to look at his mares and accompanied him to Mr LAws. He did not come home till after dark Mr Marshall, Dexton, & dind at MR LAWs. Received an invitation to dine tomorrow with MR Mason on his Is,land called Anacostan. THe mail did not come in till after ew had gone to bed.Joe was engaged in the afternoon with the mares fethcing Clover &c.

Saturday 15th M Law called after breakfast Boy came from farm with fruit &c. about noon GEnl Marshall rody by in a Hack. Dr T asked him to come in but he was going to join Capt Ting to go to the Island. He invited Dt T to ride with him which he did. rI sentt to ask Mrs Tingley to see Mrs Peters but she sent word she was going to the Island. Sent and invited Mrs Munroe and Knapp tp tea. After dinner Mrs Tingley sent her horses and I directed her not to take the carriage for her to come back to tea but when he went to address them found that the collars were not there. Joe had taken them to be mended. A heavy rain prevened MRs Tingley from going to the Island. Mrs Munroe & Mrs Knaoo with Mr Howe and Dr Watson came to tea. Mr Foorest came afterwards. We walked a little way with them intending to go to Capt Tingleys but tain prevented us, MR Forrest & Howe returned with us. I sent a horse to meet Dr T at then Landing but Joe missed him wand he walked home. Lent MR Forrest a lanthorn to go home.

Monday 16th Pleasant: Dr T went to the office. Sent t invite Mr Tinglsey to tea. SHe came early and in the evening we went to Mrs Peters to see the ladies who were to return tomorrow to Mount VErnon. Capt Tingley joined us there.. When we stippped to it Mrs Tingsley down at her lodginfs GEnt Marshall cam to door Dr T wanted us to (shop?) but as it was late and dark we came home and left hm there. Sent Joe with a lantorn but he came and mmissed him by having stayed a while at MR Munroes. Dr T invited the Secretary & Capt Tingsley to dinner for Wednesday. Dr T wrote to Mr Blodget.

Tueday 17th rain almost all the day. Dr T went to Office. Sent to ask MRs Tingley to go to wait on MRs Stoddert but she thought the weather too threatening. Sent JOe to the farm to get a Lamb, Pig, etc for dinner IN the afternoon sent a note to invite Mrs Tingsely, Mrs Forrest & LAw came in. Drank tea. Dr T came afterwards- he had been to our lots that he is getting fenced. MR Wisnell & Holland rode up and stopped a while Dr T went out in the evening. I read in the Duke de Liancourts Travels thro the United States.

Wed 18th Rain. Dr T went to the office. Engaged in the morning in preparing things for dinner. The forthcoming persons came: The Sec of State war & navy &capt/.Mrs Tingsley, , Genl Forrest, MR Young, MR Daniel, Robt BRent, M Cavachichi, JUdge Crawford & MR Rch Forrest, Mrs WhiteMR Mason came after dinner. MR law went to MT Vernon and MR PEter to his farm. Com Truxton was gone- Mr Scott and Mr Harrison (auditor) did nto come. The badness of the weather prevented them. Driver returned from Virginia in the afternoon, came in bad plight. Mr Tinglsey mentioned that MRs LEwis set off yesterday but returned because the boat leaked. After tea, all the company gone but Mr and MRs Tinglsey and GEnt Marshallwe came down stairs And I played for them till the carriage came. Mrs Law left the "Botanic Gardens " by Darden here in the morning , looked into it till the mail came. got a newspaper only- went to bed with the (illeg) there is a 37 degree difference between todays and last saturday in the thermostat.

Thursday 19th. Dr T went to the office. Joe went to look for the mares which are all missing. Mr Forrest called mentiuoned that MR Joseph Senes of Alexandria who owes Mama some money was in the City last ngiht. Dr T came in & Sims was passing by with Mr Evans he went out to speak with him and he promised he would call in the evening. Mr Fitzhugh came in with dr T and wanred to go with him to his mill to take an acknowledgement but he hesitated as Sims promised to come and I luckily recollected Mr Fitzhugh farm is not in the District of Columbia & that consequently Dr T could not act as MAgistrate. They got Mr Rd Forrest to go. Aftrer dinner Dr T walked out. Mr DaCosts a Portuguese traveling as a Botanist in the service of teh Queen of Portugl came by Dr T's invitation to see his drawings of West India Plants. I sent for Dr T who was walking somewhere with GEnl Marshall . In the evning afterMr Dacosta went, we went over to MRs Munroes to see MRs Whetecroft who is just returned from Philadelphia with a white sweeling on her knee. She is cured but very week. Her sister MRs KIng also came; her husband is Clerk to the House of Representatives, Came home about ten oclock

Friday 20th Very warm. Dr T rose early & walked out he returned to breakfast.. I sent to ask MRs Tinglesy to go to GEorgetown she sent her horses to put on our carriage and as soon as we were ready we called for her. We waited on MRs Stoddert Templeman MArbury, Lin(?)?, HArrison, and Dorsey. the last has laely increased her family by a son. Got home to dinner. Dr T had returned fromthe office and was writing a letter to MR Sims who did not call according to his promise to go by Mr LOvel. While writing Mr Munroe sent to request him to go up to the little Tavern a Young man named Evans was badly wounded in assisting with 14 other men to take a man named Dougherty against whom a peace warrant was issued and served by one man before whom he drove out of his house. Dr T took a morsel of dinner and went. The man is badly wounded in the arm with a hanger Doughtery is sent to Marlboro to jail Mr Forrest & Dr T returned. he took it to Lovel while he was gone a man came, with whom he had promised to go to see Mrs Washington's houses which he thought of renting. Dr T came just as Joe was gone to the farm with Driver and there was nobody at hand to get a horse so he walked to the Capitol. Joe returned & sent a hores for him. He came with MR Betton and drank tea. They walked out to see Punch returned & MR BEtton sat some time. Mr Howe stopped at the door and we talked some time. I asked him in but he declined as it was late/ Dr T went to see Evans, who is removed to Lovels we went to bed before he returned.

Saturday 21th Cool in the morning. grew warm. Farm. Joe brought yesterday a horese to put with ine of our carriage horses and immediately after breakfasdt we set out fo the farm. Dr T went before on the Enlish filly. Just as we were getting into the carriag Mrs Tingleys servant came with his horses to request us to go to see MRs Tousard who with Col Tousard are at Union Tavern in Georgetown coming to settle in the city. Sent her word we were going to the farm and would be glad to her there. Had a warm disagreeable ride. , the roads in some places being bad in consequence of the late rains. Dr T stopped several palces and did not get up till near dinner time. We saw all along the road the effects of the Locusts by dead twigs on most of the trees. Locust trees not touched. Dr T went into his young orchard & cut off a great many branches of trees in which they had deposited their eggs they pured the bark and on each side of one whole only there is upwards of ten eggs a little larger than fly clows I counted twenty holes in a twig about a 1/4 yard long. The LOcusts are still making a noise. Worked. Picked white & red raspberries &c There are There are quantites of cherries- it has been a remarkably fine spring for eberything.

Sunday 22nd Very pleasant. Expected that Mrs Tinglesy would have come up in the morning and that the Miss Polocks would have come over in the afternoon but nobody came. Dr T walked. I read all day.

Monday 23 VEry pleasant Engaged in writing & working &etc. Miss Pollack & her brother David came over to tea. The servant came for them Mr Isaac Pollack having come up with Miss Burnes & MRs Oakes. Began to cut grass today. Came to town again. Had hardly got home begfore MRs Gould came to see us. while she was here Dr T came in with mr La Costa who wanted to copy the Cactus Coninfera he staid to dinner. Soon after Mr Nigent, a gentleman who brought us letters from St Croix came in. He brought a Power of attorney for Dr to act with respect to his brother/sister in laws house in Georgetown Mr Nagent came from Norfolk by water & called here yesterday. Mrs Tingsley and Mrs Tounard called. After dinner we went to MRs & MRs Thomason and Dr T to  Col Thomason to send by Mr Nagent who was going immediately to Alexandria to take the passges to Norfolk he only dined here and wa in a haste to go. After dinner Mrs Knapp & Miss Whetecroft came also MR LAw & genl Marshall they drNk tea here as soon as they were gone Col Tousard called. After he went Dr T was oreoreaing to go to Mr Young's to see Bishop Carrol when Mr winsawly came he staid all night. We have not been alone a quarter of an hour since we came home.

Wed 25th After rbeakfast Dr T went to the office & MR Weinstanley went away. Mr LA Costs came to finish his plant. After dinner Dr T went to the Tavern to see GEnlk Forrest who is directing a sale of his lots. We intended to have gone to Mr Kings in the evning but there was a heavy rain which prevented it. I set out with Dr T but did not go further than Mrs Munroes he met with Genl Marshall at his office and returned home pretty early.

Thrusay 26 Dr T went to the oofice. Mr and MRs Chandler called. brought home to dinner M Bolton & Weinslowley was invited to dine with Mr Stoddert but could not go as he asked these gentlemn before. After dinner MR Bolton went and Dt T called on Mr Hewitt ( a lawyer) to employ him to set on the power he received from St Croix.After teawe went to Mr KIngs to visit Mrs Tingles and Tousard and Dr T and Mr Weinstawley went with us. We walked by Mr Tayloes house and our lotts which they have just done fencing. MR Tousard and the other gentleman came home from Mr Stodderts soon afdter we went Mrs Johnson, two daughters & son came to tea. by invitation I suppose tho it was very late in the evening. too warm to walk early. MR Wein stanley staid all night.

Friday 27 very hot thermometer 86. After breakfast Mr W went in the HACk to Tunnicliffs Tavern. Mr White gone home & Mrs Scott did not go to the office. Dr T rode to town to see Mr Mason. he was at Mr Chandlers who yesterday evening at Rhod's tavern had an affray with Templeman. Mr Forrest called. After dinner Dr T walked out. MR Forrest drank tea with us. we afterwards walked in Pennsylvania Avenue Dr T wrote to Col Hilton in answer to a letter he received some time ago.

Saturday 28th.Very hotDr T rose early, went out to see after his horses. Boy came from farm with fruit. Mr Forrest called. Dr T went out after breakfast while we were at dinner sent some ice which he had got rom Mr Deblois to MR Munroe Mr Forrest dined with us after Dr T shaved & went to Mr MUnroes intended to go to Tunnicliffs to visit Mr Tracey (a Senator) but could not get a horse in time, as I had sent Joe to fetch the remainder of the crockery ware from MR Whann's. Mr Covacici called in the evening.

Sunday 29th Dr T rose early to go with Mr Carwford to look at his lots- they returned to breakfast. His lots are a mile from the capitol. they think them too much out of the way to build at present. Mr Weinstawley came-staid to dinner Mr Peter called in the afternoon-came from MT VErnon. took a walk in the evening when we returned. Mr Stodder and his son called. Mr Forrest called also. Mr W staid all night.

Monday 30th VERy pleasant. MR LAw called while we were at breakfast. Mr Fitzhugh called Genl Lee stopped at the door GEnl Marshalls brother also was as the dppr. Drt T went to the office. Sent to invite MRs Tinglsety and Tousard to tea, but they were engaged. Mr W reclaiemd his baggage from the tavern, Drt T having invited him to stay here. IN the afternoon we all walked out. Mama and I went to Mrs Knapps, the gentlmean went to Mr BUrnes and came afterwards to us. Found MRs Knapp poorly. Mrs KIng there we all came home together. While we were out the Miss JOhnsons walked to see us. Came home about nine oclock Dr T & Mr Weinstanley at up late. Mama received a letter from Mr Mackenzie.
