Subject: . Diary entries October 1800 . ECP/ 99/ 19//

Wed 1 After breakfast set off to come to towb, the roads being heavy we were obliged to ride slowly & did not get home till about eleven oclock. Dr T went to the office, got (?) bank notes & sent them to MR Law to endorse. While he was at home Mr Rob. Munroe called -he wants to rent our wooden house for Mr (?). Dr T called in Mr Claxton & afterwards Mr Barry to take a glass of wine & bitters. Dr T returned to the office, brought with him to dinner Mr Barry, we had a poor dinner. They went together afterwards to the Eastern Branch & Mr LAws & MR Forrest came in the evening. Dr T soon after. We went to bed early.

Thursday 2 Fine day ORderred tghe carriage to go to town, but Joe cant find the horses I suppose. Dr T went to the offce and Mama and I quilting. Joe was out all morning seeking Mr Rays and at last had to go to the farm for it; Sent up by hom theree Buck Orchard grass seed. Mrs Simmons and her sisters called, also Mrs Knapp & MRs Shaw. MR Forrest came in after dinner- Dr T engaged in drawing at the Horse eclipse. THye walked out a little & returned to tea. Joe came at night with the horse.

Fri 3 Very fine weather. When JOe came from Market, found that the horse which he had put in a small lot had got out, he went after it. Dr T at the office. Received from Cambrie Murchin & two flower pots which I commisioned MRs Dick to purchase for me in Alexandria. Quilting all morning. Mr Ray & Weinstanley called. After dinner we walked to Mr Rays, leaving directions to have the carriage sent if Joe came on in time, but he did not come at all- it was a ;long walk but we were not so much tired as we expected. I am much dissapointed by the horse being gone as I wished to go to several palces. Miss MErediths and Mrs P Thornton called while we were out.

October Saturday 4th Fine Day. Cloudy and cool. Joe not returned. Dr T after breakfast, borrowed MR Munroe's horse to go to Alexander's Island over the River. We walked to Mr Munroes abiout noon & sat awhile. MR HAwkins the inventor of a new kind of Piano fort came in I asked him to come over to our house in the afternoon as Dr T had a left a copy of his word "cadmus" for him. Mr Forrest came home with us, he is very sick he did not stay long. In the evening MR Hawkins came he tuned my piano Drank tea & stiad till Dr T came . Mr FOrrest was here too. Joe not come home yet.

Sunday 5th Rain. We expected Mr Ray & Weinstanley to ddinner Mr HAwkins, nephew to Col Hawkins came as he lives close by. Mr Freeman was engaged thhe weather prevented the others from coming. Dr T went down to invite the other. Mr HAwkins, but he was at dinner & it rained so much in the afternoon that he would not come till later. Dr T had invited him to stay all night-which he did & sat up also al night. Joe came home this afternoon with the horses.

Monday 6th Cold & windy. He had a fire yesterday for the first time. Mr HAwthorne went away before we were up. returning to Philadelphia. After breakfast Dr T set off to Bladensburg to the Election for assesembly man. ThHe returned just after we had dined.... I had sent in the morning to askMrs Shaw to walk to Mrs KNaapps We called at Mrs Munroes for her then proceeded. Found Mr and MRs Holt at Mrs Knapps. They arrived on Saturday on their way to PEtersburg from the BAth in Birkly County Virginia. As we returned home stopped at Mr Munroes. There were several getnleman there-we staid a little & came home about nine oclock.

Tuesday 7th Fine Day. JUst as we had breakfasted Mr Meyer an old acquaintance of Dr T's drove up. He was lately Consul at Cape Francaous & is come here to see the Sec of State. Dr T invited him to stay with us, but he declined as he meant only to stay a few days. he said Dr T was expected to dine at Hill's Tavern on the Capitol Hill, he did not before intedn to go. THye went to the Commisioners Office. Mama and I rode to GeorgeTown - went to see MRs Dorsets to get a couple fo July Flowers. She was just going with her aunt to walk out, so we left the carriage there & accompanied them. went to a few shops & to MR HANsons returned & sat a littlw while MRs Doreys - it was past two oclock before we got home we staid so long Dr T walked to the tavern. Found an invitation from Madame Simmons to spend the evening on Thursday next. Afrwe dinner rode down to MR Cranch's then to Mr LAws & sent the carriage for Dr T. Mrs LAw & Mrs Tingseley had walked out, but came soon after we were there. MR Morris (son to Robt Morris came in; he has iron works at Trnton- Mr LAw came in & afterwards CApt Tingey & Dr T. We set off just as the moon rose.

Wed 8 Fine day. Dr T went to the office. I sent to borrow some gowns of MRs Scotts. Making a (illeg) map. Mrs Wilkinson & her son called. The waggon came from the farm with a load of Hay some oats & c. Drt T went out after dinner, returned with Mr Deacreux after tea Capt Kirkland & Mrs Barry came in. Mess D TB went away & Capt Kirkland says he plays on the violin & violenettto. Dr T caught a cold, going to the Election & has a cold and heafdache.

Thursday 9 PLeasant. Dr T at the office. Mama andd I woeked i all the morning. MR Lewis called. Dr T has a bad cold & did not go wiht us to Mr Simmons. We went just ast dusk & were there near an hour before before any one else came. Mrs Johnson & daughters, Miss MEredith were the onyl ladies I klnew, there was a MR & MRs Hagner & a young lady Ms Wilkinson MR Wadsworth, Major Cushing & c. THye had four of Genl Wilkinsons band- among them a Tambourin whioch pleased me very much as I had never before seen it well played. I danced only two dances & then came home as Dr T was obliged to stay home..

Friday 10th Fine warmd fay Dr T staid at home all day. He received a letter from his aunt a day or two ago mentioning that Chorley had given up & been allowed three years to pay his debts in by his Creditors. Accause de ses disgraces nous souffrons a present. MR & MRs Holt called I went with them to the capitol and PResidents house. Mr Meyer came & sat some ti e, he went just after I came home. MR Wm BRent called in the aftrenoon. MR Ray & Mrs Weinstanley drank tea here. MR Forrest came in I read the English Newspapers. Mrs Ray brought us.

Saturday 11th Very fine. BReakfasted late. MR R Forrest called. Genl MR Forrest came to get a deed acknowledged OLd Mr KIng came about the road to be made in front of the Capitol. Dr T had the headache in the morning drawing at his plate of the Capitol. Joe is gone after the horses again. Mr Gantt sent word he could nt come & he is going to Annapolis tomorrow. Mr Ray sent a Note requesting Dr T to be bail- he sent for Mr Hewitt to consult him, MR Forrest soon after came in. Dr T werote MR Ray to excuse himself. Joe came home & could not fint the horses.

Sunday 12th Dr T was writing to his father in law when Mr Hickney came in, he is nephew to MR Blodget just arrived from Boston- he staid to dinner. Mr Forrest also came. A boy came from the farm-brought two terrier pups, one was ssent to Mr PEter and the other Ro MR Young. MR T went immmediately after dinner Mr F staid all the evening.

Monday 13 Gloomy & Rain. (penciled in at the top after the entry recorded: Mr Gantt called in the morning). I was married this day ten years- it then rained. I hope we may be abble to pass the next anniversayr more aggreably! This time twelve moths where shall we be? My husband has written to day to his father in law, desiring immediately remittances for in consequence of Chorleys breaking he is brought into difficulties which after getting thro I hope he will never know again. Sent the letter to Dr Crawford Baltimore A copy inclosed to Dr Dawson Tortola to go to Philadelphia by Mr HAwkins Mr Forrest & MRs White came in just after dinner. Mr BRent came and spent the evening with us.

Tueday 14 Dr T sent for Mr Hewitt before he came MR Stewart Browne came. MR Hewittt is to draw out deeds to convey all our personal property to those who were securities in the suit brought by Stone. Dr & Mrs Bullace called. Darnall the Sheriff called, he said to see if Dr T had settled with Lawyer Gantt respecting the fees. I told him myself Dr T would settle with MR Gantt and that he could not see him at present. I hope we soon shall have done with Lawyers and sheriifs & all that appertains to them. MR & MRs Roy & MR Winstaley came and drank tea with us. Mr W chose out two of our prints for which he is to give us two others- Dane & Venus.

Wednesay 15 Gloomy rauin in the evening. Boy came from the farm with mutton 7 etc. Sent to town in the morning to Col Burrows that we would take tea with them. Dr T at the office- Mama and I quilting. After dinner I coped over the little Ballad Dr T wrote some time ago respecting a Duekl to give to Col Burrows- Just as I went to dress Mrs Shaw & Knapp called. Mama sat wiht them till I came down & then she went to dress. We set off & had almost got half way to town & Dr T recollected the Ballad & we returned to get it, Mrs Johnsons & two other drs came soon after us; Mrs Burrows expected also MRs MAson but she made it so late that MRs B's thinking there was some mistake sent a servant to see if she was comng. At last she came with her husband & sister Miss Murray. We staid pretty late & had a dark rainy night to come home in- but we got safe. When wer were going to bed found that Creels ( a young pointer) was lost. JOe was out some time but could not find him.

Thursday 16 Fine day. MR Hewitt called with the eed which Dr T is to acknowledge before one of the commisioners. Mr Forrest called. Drt went over to Mrs Browns to see Mrs Triest- he married MRs B's daughter. A Man brought 4 prints here for sale views in Philadelphia -they are poor things- Dr T went to the office. AFter dinner he went to MR Rays Joe sent to look for Creels, found him at MR BRowns Soon after Dr T came home Mr Hickney and Mr Forrest called.

Friday 17th. Dr T wanted to sent to invite Mr Mayer to dinner but it looked liekely to rain and it was too late when he proposed it. He went to the office. Mr Meyer went by & sent Dr T to tell hime he had letter wrote him to a favor by dinner. Which he did. After dinner we all walked as far as the PResidents house. Mr Weinstanley came home with us Mr Forrest MR Meyers chair was waiting & beimng an invalid he went home before dark. VERy warm & damp. Mrs Whetecroft & Dr Watson came in, son after MR Munroe. They sat their Evening with us.

Saturday 18th Cloudy & rain. Mr Weinstanley came while we were at breakfast with his dog & gun or rather Mrs Rays dog & gun. He & MR Meyer were going to the farm with Dr T MR Devereux called while they were waiting for Mr Meyer but as he did not come home; Dr T borrowed MR BRents horse & they went without him. Dr T was to have gone in Meyer's chaise. Mama and I went to Georgetown to some stores & on our return called to inquire of Mr & Mrs Wm King the Character of a woman who is to be sold. Just as we got there a storm of wind & rain commenced and all the way way home it continued. cleared up in the afternoon. Mr Forrest drank tea with us & then went to a meeting to be held at the little Hotel to consult on a proposed manner of shewing the people's joy at the approaching meeting of Congress in the District of Columbia, the new seat of Government. Dr T & Mr Weinstanley did not come till late. Mr Forrest came again & sat till bed time.

Sunday 19th Wind & rain. Rain in the night & till abbout eleven oclock wind continued to blowe very much. MR Forrest called before he set off for Marlbro. Dr T webt about noon to MR Rays. Drew & read all day. Dr T did not come home till late in the Evening.

Monday 20th Fine day.

Dr T went to the office. Sent Joe to Mount Vernon to fetch the two she asses. A Vessel going to London. Dr T thought of sending his drawing of West India Plants to Dr Lettsom. to have engraved with the amount of the little Island Jost Van Dyke. where he was born. After dinner Dr T sent to town to enquire if the vessel was going to London. Found it was ggoing to stop at Cowes for orderes- declined sending his drawing. We Walked out Mr Freeman met us & Dr T invited him to walk with us, we went as far as MR Tayloes house & returned to tea. Dr T received a letter from his aunt; post office moved to the Genearl Post Office. Dr T sent to MR Lovel, to speak to hima about the undertaking the Brick work of MR Blodget's houses as the man already engaged goes too slowlyy.

Tuesday 21st Dr T went to the office. Quilting all mrning. Intended to have gone to MRs Knapps in the Evening but found that seh was at Mr Munroes. She called here for a few mintes. Joe came home with the asses. Dr T writing to Dr Lettsom.

Wes 22 Mild. Boy acme from the farm with butter &c says the four fillies are there. Joe all day seeking the carriage horses. Mr White called this morning to ask whether we could make it convenient to take in GEnl Marshall & family for the winter, as there will be a great scarcity of accomoddations & Dr T offered to ake Mr Marshall when he past came. We mentioned the only manner in which we should like it - that is for them to live as part of our family- not separetly aas they wished. Dr T brought Mr Christie of Susequehannah to dinner. AFter dinner as MR White was passing Dr T called him in to see a letter which he had received for the Commissioners from Messrs Marshall and Stoddert mentioning that the President would like to be here in a few days & his Lady soon after. MR Forrest came in Just as MR Christie had ordered his horse, a violent gust began, wind, thunder, and lightning & rain. He drank tea & when it held up a l;ittle he went to Georgetown and Mr Forrest to his lodgings at the little Hotel. RAined all night

Thursday 23 Rain JOe came with the Horses. THe asses were down by the hotel Dr T went to the office. Began to wrok a trimming for a cambrick Muslin.

Friday 24 Windy. Dr T at the office. Working at my trimming. After dinner we went to the Capiol called on MR and MRs Smith at Hills Tacvern. went thence to Mr Daltons did not fo in as Mrs D was not well- called at Capt Tingleys- sent a little while only as they are all very busy putting their house to rights. A note came fdom Mr King telling that there was cattle in our lots. Sent Joe to drive them out.

saturday 25th SEnt the carriage up for Mrs Robinson, she came about noon. About noon while UI was stitting at my frame, Dr T came in with Col Mercer & his nephew Mr Nuir from Virginia & Mr I Polack they c\looked at the plan of the Capitol & took siomething to drink. As they were going Mrs Fitzhugh & MR & Mrs Thornton & Miss Thornton drove up. they sat a little while Mrs Fitzhugh went to Mr M Fitzhugh to fetch her sister in law. & Major Thornton went with his daughter to Alexandria. Mrs P Thorton remained with us. We tooka walk in the morning accompanued by MR Forrest & purchased some glass. Genl Marshall came while we were at breakfast to speak on the subjetc of his lodging with us but he concluded to take a house as he thought his family of servants would make it disagreeable to us. Mr Rd Forrest having offered to lend him furniture for the time he expects to stay, (?) to determine to take a house. I have been so much engaged as not to be abkle to write every day regularly and I have begun at at the wrong end of the day. Dr T brought MR Hewitt to tea- I sent to invite MR BRent but the boy made a mistake & a gentleman we did not know came in, Mr Hewit knew him and introduced him named MR Thorn a clerk.

[Crossed OUt: (illeg) sent a note mentioning that the cattle in our lots- Sent JOe to drive them out he did not come in till very late. Dr T went out & staid late. I had to send to tell him it ]was bed time

October 26 Pleasant: Dr T went to MR Rays. Mrs P Thornton and I walked as far as MR Tayloes House intended when we set out to go to Mr KNapps but found it too warm. Found 4 cattle & several hogs in our field of buckwheat, bot a litle boy to drive and fasten up the fence. Sent Joe in the moornint to invite Genl Marshall to dinner also MR White but he was gobe to Mt VErnon. MR Wm BRent called in the morning MRs Fitzhugh came about one oclock with Muiss Fench Fitzhugh. Mr MArhsall came we had just sat down to dinner when Maj Thornton came. MR and MRs F went to MRs LAWs before tea. MR Hickney & Mr Munroe called in the evening.

Monday 27th. Sent Negro child to the farm with its father daniel. Mrs F & G went in her Pheaton to Georgetown on our return called at Mrs Knapps. About noon MRs Barry sent word se would drink tea with us. I sent word we sjould be glad to see thm. Mrs Ray & children & Mr Winstanley camine in. THey were going to Georgetown 7 the horse balked. they staid dinner with us. Mr & MRs P Thornton went to Mr LAwsA MR Washington came while were were atdinner. Mrs Ray ordere her carraige early but Mrs Barry cae before she was gone which she did not wish as she was not drest for company. Capt Tinglet called. Our company were Mrs Barry & two daughters Dr Watson,. MR Field & (illeg) an acquanitance of MR Thornton who had been here in the morning Mr Fitbronsa(?) here also in thje morning MR & Mrs Thornton came immediately after Mr Barry. I was obliged to borrow a servant (Jerry) Joe having gone again after the horses.

Tuesday 28th Major THornton drove us to town again, on our return called to see MRs T Peter & Mrs Wilkinsion & Mrs T (wife of Major T)called on a Mrs Wood while I went to pay for the Glasds I bought. Mrs Robinson went home in the morning. MR Tench Ringgold came ti dinner MR Hanson & brother came after dinner. Mama Mrs PT & I walked down to the new bridge built over the Tober (or Goose Creek) Mr Hanson and Ringgold went as soon as we returned. MR Thornton had gone out & returned after tea. Mr Hickney came in. Mrs & Miss BRown returned our visit. Mr T went home with them. WEnt to bed about 1/2 after nine.

Wed 29 Joe returned with the carraige. MR Walbeck came to see Mr Thornton. MR & Mrs THonron went away about eleven oclock. MR Forrest sent a present of some rock fish. Dr T walked out & returned to tea. I copeid a song (Coolesn) for Miss Barry. Dr T writing all the evening. Sent Joe to inquire how MRs Phethean was.

Thursdday 30 Cloudy. AT work all the morning and afternoon at my trimming. Mr Forrest & Mrs Peter called at breakfasttime. In the evening MR Forrest & Hickney . Sent Joe to enquire if we could do anything for Mrs Phethsohean having heard that her husband died last night. MR Hickney staid after tea, & we set up till after eleven oclock.HErs an ingenious, moderst, young man

Friday Oct 31 Rose late, MR Forrest called before we had breakfasted. Has been sick & is gone to Marlbro. MR Hickney called & brought me some books. Sent Joe to Miss Barry with the Song & Some plays and the Annals of Virtue ion French. He returned & Brought me the works of M de Florian in Frenhc. Dr T after dinner sent Joe for some canvas that Mr Clephan was painting and for two straining frames; the frames were not right and he sent for Mr Lenox who made them to direct him how to alter them- which he did and returned in one evening. I read aloud some of the entertaining tales of M de Florian.
