Monday 1 Cold. MR Weinstanley went to Alexandria. Mr & Mrs Peter called on their way to Mr LAws walking. Mrs Dexter returned our Visit. Sent Daniel to the farm with the Jack. Mr Blodget came ti dinner. Dr T went to GEorgetown on businesss did not come till we had dined. Mr Turner came & considered himself at liberty to quit the farm as he saus he is engaged from the 1st of December not from Christmas as we understood. MR Blodget went to Georgetown. MR Forrest & MR Hickney were here in the Evening.
Tuesday 2 cCold. Dr T went to the office. We walked to a shop near the hotel, when we returned found MR Forrest at our house, went over to Mrs BRownses and Took Miss Brown with us to MR TAyloes House to see the Chimney pieces of artificial stone. Mr Blodget went in search of MR Stofddeert & did not come in till we had just done dinner. He went afterwards to George Town Sent a copy of the letter to Mhorley to Baltimore. Dr T playing at Draughts with Mr Forrest.
Wed 3 Fine day. Boy came from the farm- one oif the Jennies bought at Mount Vernon died this morning. Intended to have gone to George Town but put it off till afternoon that Dr T might go too. MR Blodget came and said that Mr Field would come. While we were dining Mrs Fitzhugh and Miss Fitzhugh came in on their way home from Georgetown Eat a little & went on. MR Hickney went on our horse to Genl Forrests to carry the petition to the assembly for a direct foad frmom the City to thgthe Frederic road. Mr Field brought the Minature of Genl washington which he is panting from Stewarts original, lent him by Mr Winstanley. IT is a beautiful pictuire. Dr T received a packet from MR RH Hilcocks Phila containing the discounts relative to MR Bourkes Estate. Mr Field staid all night. MR Forrest drank tea here and MR Hickney called.
Thurdday 4th Rain. Mr Field went after breakfast The first assembly inn GeorgeTown tonight, Invitations were sent to the Ladies in the City. As the Managers of the City Assembly sent them to the ladues of the Town. The Gentleman go by paying for the night only. Mr Blodget at home writing all day. Dr T returned early from the office. Mr Blodget & Dr T went out a little before tea. Dr T bought some newspapers with him from Mr Munroes. MR Forrest came. Dr T played at back gammon with MrB and me. Set up very late.
Friday 5 Rain MR Blodget went to town.
Saturday 6th Cold. Dr T wrote a note to Mr Fitzhugh and I to Mrs Thornton which we sent by Mr Danl Brent. Dr T went to see some of the numbers and I went to Mr Smiths & copied a part of a letter written some time ago respecting a monumnet in memory of Genl washington and had it put it Mr Smiths Paper to which he subscribed. Sent Joe to the farm with a note to be taken by one of the boys to Mr James White at Monocassy will, respecting a manager and to know when he would senf the horses we are to have to try. Joe and a boy came from the farm. Heard that Bishop Clagett had a room in the capitol to preach in. SEnt to invite Mr Blodget and Field to come to dinner which they did about three oclock. Mr Weinstanley came back this evening- they all slept here.
Monday 8th Cold & damp Mr Field and Weinstanley walked to Georgetown. Mama and I went in the carriage & on the way took in Mr Blodget & left him in Town. Went to a few stores- when we returned found a note from MRs Thornton saying they would all come in tomorrow to go to the Assembly and the little jacket of which I wanted the patter. Weinstanley came to dinner. Hickney & Mr Forrest here in the evening.
Tuesday 9th Fine day. Sent Joe to town to get some gorceries & a crape band for Dr To to wear to the Levee, MR Adams son in New York being dead. Mrs Fitzhugh & Mr and MrsThornton & Miss Fitzhugh came about two oclock. Dr T did not go to the Levee soon as we had dined we went to dress, Miss Hanson came to go with us, drest & slept here with Miss Fitzhugh, MR and Mrs Thonron slept here also. Mr & MRs Fitzhugh had a room at the tavern. Mr Blodget came after dinner, also MR J Mason. We were obliged to ask Mr Winstanley &Blodget to sleep in the tavern to accomodate Mr and MRs Thornton. We had a very pleasant evening There were 39 Ladies and a great many gentleman We came home at two oclock. Mama had a bad cold & did not go with us.
Wednesday 10th Fine day. Mrs Fitzhugh came to breakfast & went to see Mrs Young - soon after they returned MRs Scott & Miss Mary & Miss BRown called to see them & invited them & us to tea tomoorrow. MR and Mrs& Miss Nourse called to see us. Genl Smith & Van Cortland clled MR Blodget called in the morning went to the Capitol & called again after dinner. Weinstanley walked to GeorgeTown at night. MRs Fitzhughs and her sister in law went to lodge at MRs Youngs. Mr Fitzhugh came to know where she was and followed her. Mr Forrest & Hickney here in the Evening. Drt T bought two cows one with a calf for 62$ Waggon came with Hay etc. Sent word to the manager he would give him 50L next year.
Thursday 11th Rain & stormy. MR and MRs Thornton and Miss French and I went to the Capitol to hear the Debates- we went into the Gallery & the speaker sent a member to invite us into the Lobby-soon after we went down the House adjourned. We went also to look at the Senate room- they had adjourned MRs Fitzhugh went to GEorgetown on business returned about one oclock. We gave them a cold snack and they all went home. They sent exuses to Mrs SCott & to Mrs Carolls where they were invited to dinner. Dr T and Mr Weinstanley had rode out to the Eastern BRanch returned to dinner- Had hte carriage got for him to take some of his things to Mr Rays. Hickney & Mr Forrest here. Dr T received a letter from MR Mackenzie he put the bills into Mr Wells hand.
Friday 12th Thundering Snowing Hailing Blowing.Raining in the morning and last night. Mr Winstanley went into a hack with some of his things to Georgetown Dr T sent Joe to town on business. A terrible stormy dya- accounts received that Mr Jefferson is chosen PResident the votes in S caolina determine it. Dr T walked to MRs BUrnes where ther was to have been a sale of NEgroes but it was postponed. He went with Mr White to dine at Capt Tingeys Mr Hickney, MR Forrest and Mr BRown came in the evening. Dr T played at backgammon with Mr Brown til after ten oclock.
Saturday 13 VEry cold. Waggon came down with wood Dr T walked to town with Capt Tingey. & Mr Beall who called here just as he was going to ride. MR Blodget (?) Genl Lee called here but did not stay till DR T returned. Mr Forrest and Mr Weinstanley came in Field, Blodget, and Weinstanley staid all night.
Sunday 14 Cold. Just as we were going to breakfast Mr Weinstaneley went away offended with Dr T he had mae a bargain last wednesday for a lot and would not stand to it. Dr T thought himself ill used and said it was not honorable. & he went off. Mr Field & Blodget went after breakfast Dr T is engaged in writing a letter to Genl Lee respecting the monument now under consideration. Mama Dr T MR Forrest and I walked to MR Oeters on the way aclled to visit Mr Mrs OTis MC, Mrs marshakk Mrs Davy PEter and Mr Johnson & family. Dined at Mr Peters with Mr MErediths family. Our carriage came for us and we got home about nine oclock Mr Blodget and Forrest acme just as were thinking of going to bed.
Dec 15th Fine day. Dr T went to the CApitol to take his leytter to Genl Lee thence to a sale of Negroes over the eastern BRanch Mrs Laird and her sister called. Krs Knapp called. Mr Foxhall came to see MR Blodgetmr Blodget went to Georgetown. A Man came with a woman and child for sale. MR Fie;d called and left his minature of Genl Washington here. Brought Winstanleys horse and bridle for which he is to send him two minatures @ 50 the other @ 40 $ He went in the stage in the morning. Mr Forrest walked with us to a womans of the name of Ray to enquire the character of the negro woman as we returned we met the man who had the selling of her and told him we did not want her. Mrs Ray did not speak well of her. Mr Forrest and Hickney drank tea. Drt dined at Mrs T Hansons and was too late for the sale. Dr T received a letter from Mr Wells Phila
Tuesay 16th MR Oakley called. Dr T paid him on acct of lots bought of MRs Burnes 150$ Dr T went to the office. I began to try to copy the head of Genl W by Mr Field - was very much interupted by Mr Turner and Beall coming. Dr T sent by Mr Munroe the order on Adam King GeorgeTown for the amount of bill sold by Mr Well $1044 to be paid in ten days. DrT brought home with him to dinner Presly Thornton. After dinner he went & Dr T went to wait on Mr Jefferson. Wen to the Levee this morning. MR Blodget and Field came. Dr T lost his horse and had to walk home. Joe went an found ti without a saddle or bridle. Mr Forrest and Hickney cakked Mr L walked to & from alexandria to day.
Wednesday 17th VEry fine day. I have the beginning I had made to Mr Shield- I have begun with the wrong color. He took the minature with him- he is obliged to copy it this week. Mr Blodget went too. JOs out all the morning seeking the saddle and bridle. Found it but the woman not let him have it till sent half a dollar for her negromans taking when if he had let it alone the mare would have brought it with her. Dr T sent a note for it in the afteernoon and they sent it home. HE wrote to Mr Well & MR Mackenzie . Played at draughts with MR Forrest, Mama and myself. The Revd Mr Lyle called.
Thursday 18th Dr T went to the office, returned soon, Mr Scott and Mr White gone home. Mr Jefferspon said he would call this morning, but did not. Mr Andrews cam with Dr T and brought some samples of his composition ornaments. Dr T wanted some to shew MR Jefferson. After dinne Dr T went to see Mr SCott. Horse thre him over her head by stumbling fortunately did not hurt himself. MR Forrest, Hickey, Oarsibn, Masnerop called. Mama Mr ?and I went to MRs Browns when we returned found Dr T and the parson at backgammon He went soon after. Rad the nespapers & in the work iof Sir J Reynolds.
Sunday 19th Fine day windy. Dr T set off with Mr Wm Brent about one oclock to go to Mr Roseiers over the Eastern BRanch. I began to copy the ground plan of the capitol. We had given them a cold Snack and were going to take a small dinner ourselvs when MR Champlain called. I went to the door to see why the servant was about so long I was obliged to ask him in. Threw a table cloth over our little dinner. He was going to dine with the Prsident & sat till it was time. Sent Joe to the farm for hay, corn, etc. MR Field called after dinner for a few minuts There were fifty seven ladies at the Georgetown Ball, Mr Hickney and Forrest called- played at draughts with Mr Forres. Rain and wind all the night.
Saturday 20 Very fine day. Bought a wooden tray of a negro man who has purchased his freedom by making rhwm & bowls at his leisure time. General & Mrs Marshall returned our Visit. Did all I could with Dr T's directions to the plan of the capitol. Waggon came with hay. The carriage mares filly came iwh it & returned. A team with a horse ? our black colt stopped at the door, the man ask 40 L for it. Mr Field and Blodget came in the evening, Mr Hickney called. Mr F and B staid all night.
Sunday 21 Mr Field qwnr before breakfast and Mr B after. Many people went to Church at the Capitol. Dr T came home just as we sat down to dinner. At Mr Hansons request wrote some verses for the Printers Boy at Christmas. Wrote a note to Mr Law respecting the monumnet.
Monday 22 Rain in the morning early Fine day. Rose very late. Two men came wanting to be managers Dr T went to the office then to the Capitol, Waited dinner till four oclock. MR Christie came with him. HE gave him an order on Adam KIng for 200$ for a pair of mules bought some time ago. Mr Blodget came in the afrernoon.
Tuesday 23 Fine day. Dr T went to the capitol and Navy yard. Engaged a manager John Wilburn @ 40 L a year. Waggon came with corn &c. Mr Field came and brought his cloaths to stay some time with us. MRr Jefferson called while dr T was out. Colonol Menges and another gentleman called to see MR Blodget. prepared to go to the assembly. Mr Scott very ill. Mrs Tingey was going to Mrs Peters got her to enquire if Miss Mereths were going to the assembly on her return she bnrought me a note from them saying that their coahcman was sick. I wrote to offer ours but they were afraid to trust him with their horses as they are young. In the afternoon Mr Field walked to town and said he would bring a hack. Returned on his own horse could not het one. Joe thought of putting his horse with ours in the carraige which did very well. Mr Field went with us. There were about 27 ladies. Returned a little after twelve. Not as agreeable as the last.
Wed 24 Fine day. Dr T went to see Mr Scott Sen Joe to town to get raisins, flour Dr T returned about one oclock left MR Scot very ill he is quite unsanablle Got letter of an old dat from Dr Dawson. Mr Field copying his minature of Genl Washington Sent Joe to see from Mr Scott and to the man who has the black horse to bring it here tomorrow. MR SCott no better, the man is gone to Frederic. Dr T writing more verses for the printers boy. Set up late. Played at backgammon.
Thursday 25 Fine day. Anotehr fine day. The weather has been delightful for some time past. Poor Mr Scott died this morning He is a great loss both as a public and private man. HE leaves a wife and seven children. Mr Stodder stopped at the door, Dr T webt with him to Church at the capitol. He afterwards went to see MR Jefferson. returned to dinner. Mr Hickney called invited him to dinner but he was going shooting. MR Field painting. Mr Blodget went out but returned to dinner. Dr T wrote to MR White. In the evning the Gentleman were all drawing, writing, I played when Mr Harper called. He sat till eleven oclock/ Did not go to bed till nmear one.
Friday 26 Fine day. The new manager went up to the farm to see it, to set in on Monday. Dr T went to attend Mr Scotts funeral he is to be buried at his farm i Virginbia. Had the drawing room prepared for Mr Field to home in, as he expected MR HArper to set this morning. MR Blodget making a sketch of Dr T 's plan for an University on Peters Hill/ MR Oswalf came to set for his picture & about one oclock Mr Harper came. Mr Blodget went out & returned to dinner Dr T went all the way did not reutn till Evening was much fatigued.
Saturday 27th Rain. Dr T had his horse at the door to fo to the farm but the clouds had the appearance of rain he set it off. Walked with MR Blodget to Mr Burnes. Mr and Mrs Ray and Lonia came, they walked so that we were obliged to ask them to stay to dinner. Mr Harper came to set for his picture & as it began to rain and was late Dr T invited him also. Mr Blodget went to town & did not return till evening. I played a little Mr Harper went before tea. Mr and MRs Ray went in our carriae. Went to bed a little earlier than common.
Sunday 28th Rain all day. Boy came from farm with butter. Mr Field painted a little Mr Blodget wrote I read in the vening copied an anthem which Mr Hickney brought. Mr F went out after dinner to see MR Cox. MR Blodget wrote the notes of one he recolledcted called Poole and composed by a Blacksmith in New England. Went to bed about elevn.
Monday 29 Fine day Clear and Cold Dr T went to the office. MR Blodget to town. MR Field retuned about ten oclock. Mr Oswald came to set. HTe man came to see the farm. Mr Cox came to see Mr Field- brother to MR Senes Cox a handsome young man. Sent Joe to inquire how Mrs Scott and family are. MR Blodget returned to dinner. MR Field went to town returned in the evening.
December Tuesday 30th Cold. MR Field went to town early & returned to breakfast. Dr T wrote to tghe Revd Grenier & to Major Rivardi. Settled with Mr Turner. Mr Ball came & wanted to rent our land again. Mr Field and Dr T went to the Levee. Mr Field went out to visit Miss Brown- Mr Harper Mr Cox called while he was gone and sat awhile. Mr Forrest came. Mr Field acme home after I had gone to bed.
Wed 31 Cold 1800? Mr harper came before we had breakfasted. Mr Cox came Dr T invited him to stay dinner but Mr Field went with him. Dr T went to MR Nourses. MR Blodget dined with us, Mr B & F walked to town in the evening and returned again.
