"John BRodeau in Latin (Brodaus) a great critic on whom Lypdius, Scalper, and Grothus and all the learned have bestowed great encomiums, was descended from a noble family in France& born at Lourd in 1500. He was liberally educated and placed under Alciat to study the civil Law, but soon forsaking that, he gave himselg up wholly to languages & the Bellas Lettres. He travelled into Italy, where he became acquainted with Sadolet, Bembers) other famous writs, and here (says Thunanus) he applied himself to the study of mathematics, philosophy, and the sacred languages in which he made no small proficiency. Then returning to his country he led a (?) but not an idle life as his many lucubrations abundantly testify. He remained free from all ambition and vainglory & suffered his works to be published under the sanction and authority of others than under his own.
