Looking back on the creation of Washington D.C. from the perception of firmly established separate sexual spheres, it is easy to dismiss women's contributions to the establishment of the national capital. This polarized framework fails to consider that the creation of the Federal City occurred at a more fluid historical moment. At the end of the eighteenth century American women needed to negotiate their actions across boundaries muddled and shifted by the Revolution. The American Revolution left white, middle and upperclass with an ambivalent legacy;
