SHORE BEGINS LYNCH PROBE By Associated Press. SALISBURY, Mri., March 15.— The State's investigation into the lynching oŁ Matthew Williams, negro, began today as the Wicomico county grand jury prepared to summon the first of the 102 witnesses who have been directed to appear to testify. Judge Joseph L. Bailey, presiding jurist of the Circuit Court, said he had not received any communication from the International Labor Defense League today and would not comment on it before its arrival. ASKS IMPEACHMENT Impeachment of Judge Bailey was demanded today by oLuis Ber-ger, secretary of the International Labor Defense League, in a telegram to Governor Ritchie from Baltimore. Berger asked that Judge Bailey be impeached because of his manner in giving his charge to the grand jury yesterday which is investigating the lynching of Williams. The League official charged Ilia I the judge insulted the League by referring to an "outside d ganiza-tion," which Berger said meant the International Labor Defense League, instead of asking action against the lynchers. Mr. Berger said in Baltimore today that he had sent a telegram to the judge criticizing the absence of negroes and poor farmers as members of the investigating grand jury and asking that a committee of negroes and white workers be permitted to "investigate the grand jury to learn whether any of its members were part of the lynch mob leaders." HEAR TESTIMONY Judge Bailey said that when he receives the telegram he will turn it over to John R. Pettison, chief judge of the First Judicial Circuit. who was expected here this afternoon. The grand jury went into session this morning to hear testimony in a few other criminal cases which has been cited for study.
