Bailey, State's Attorney BOYCOTT MEETING BEGINS Assn. of Commerce Committee Here Discusses Reprisals Attorney General William Preston Lane Jr. today was on the Eastern Shore conducting a personal investigation of the recent Salisbury (Md.) lynching. Lane, accompanied by Assistant Atty. Gen. G. C. A. Anderson, was to confer this afternoon with State's Attorney Levin C. Bailey, of Wicomico County. How the investigation and prosecution will proceed is not definitely known. Next Grand Jury in March State's Attorney Bailey said today: "Evidence and facts in the case are being gathered through Mr. Lane's office and my own. A coroner's jury will be called as soon as the investigations are complete, and the facts will be brought out before this jury. "Our next grand jury session is not scheduled to be held until March. The court has power, however, to call a special grand jury session if it sees fit. "Grand jury action does not enter Into the case at this time." Boycott Meeting Today Other officials interested in the investigation indicated it may be better to pass up the coroner's inquest, keeping evidence secret until it can be presented to the grand jury, along with requests for indictments against mob leaders. Meanwhile, Eastern Shoremen continue to announce they are maintaining an economic boycott against Baltimore merchants, due to bitterness against Baltimore newspapers, ministers and H. L. Mencken. The animosity arose as a result of criticism which followed the lynching. Delegates from throughout the state, including the Eastern Shore, attended a meeting of the trade relations committee of the Baltimore Assn. of Commerce at 2 p. m. today. Negro Lynched Dec. 4 At this meeting an effort was Blade to "iron out" the difficulties which have brought about the economic boycott, according to Joseph P. Healey, chairman. The meeting still Was in session late this afternoon. The lynching took place Friday night, Dec. 4. Matt Williams, alias Handy, 35-year-old Negro, was dragged from a hospital cot and hanged and burned in the court- (Turn to Page Five)
