McMcchen 2007 McCulloh St.* ^Baltimore City The Interracial Commission of Maryland has been shocked and horrified with the reported lynching of Matthew Williams by a mob in the town of Salisbury, Maryland, on Friday evening, December 4, 1931. Your Commission is sure that you share in a feeling of horror over the lawlessness and brutality of the mob, and will do all in your power to see that its leaders are apprehended and tried. This method all good citizens everywhere will approve. Their apprehension ought not to be difficult if, as reported, the officers of the law held converse with the leaders and urged them to desist and let the law take its course. Your Commission is pleased to note your high resolve to bring the guilty to justice without regard to their standing in the community. No excuse is offered for the crime attributed to Matthew Williams. All right thinking men of every race condem such crimes. Your Commission has been appointed for the express purpose of promoting good relations between the races, and offers its services to this end if needed. Very sincerely, Ch-a4.rman.
