S. Smith, dated Washington Feby 10, 1814 to Isaac McKim - " I ask you to prep the Mayor to Transmit the accounts against the US for expences in preparation for the defence of the City of Baltimore . - Many of the Items will, must be paid, for Genl. Armstrong told me last thing that they Should to Wit Gun Carriages, Gun Tackles, Spunges Rammers &c &c Cannon Ball - Platform at City Battery and Powder Magazine will probably be paid Cartridges for the Militia Hire of Seamen Corps - if put at 12 dollr. pr. Month being the pay in the Navy - Barges which would now be used by the Sea Fencibles Pikes - the State will pay for Expences of many other Charges - if the US should refuse - " Seamen at Lazaretto, the City paid them $16 - they must receive from the Government $12 or as much as they can get.
