| 18 [Doc. No. 39.] Baltimore, 25(J February, 1827-The Hon. Peter Little : Sir : Your letter of the 21st current, to the Mayor, was referred to me. as agent for the Corporation, this morning, with directions from him to answer it. When in Washington, 1 ltli ultimo, at which time I had the pleasure of calling upon you. I received from the Third Auditor such papers only, relalne totbe rejected part of our claim, as were unconnected with other papers, parts of which had heen allowed, and parts disallowed. by the Secretary of War; the consequence is, that the documents in "hand fall short of the amount claimed. Under these circumstances. it was thought best to refer, in the memorial, to Mr. llagner, for the proofs, and to return the papers I received from him last mouth, to his office. The papers, however, owing to my not having received precise orders, are still in my hands, and I pray you. Sir, to instruct me on the subject at as early a day as you can find convenient. Ton are aware that the balance now claimed was rejected on account of the want of proper vouchers, and alleged improper charges : the amount was, nevertheless, expended in the service of the United States.
