Hugh Zeigler knows the thrill of being chased by a hungry bear, of feeling the long claws tearing at his ribs, of feeling its hot breath on the back of his neck. Of course, it was not actually that bad. But the bear tumbled down an embankment and started for Zeigler with a "quick lunch" look in her eye as Zeigler was walking down Deer Park road toward his father's farm about 6 o'clock one evening this week. Zeigler ran and didn't stop until he had retraced his path back to McDonogh road, a quarter of a mile away. Here he burst into the farm house of Robert Wheat and implored them to take the bear off his back. As the tale spread toward Pikes-ville, toward Harrisonville, toward McDonogh, the bear lost all standing as an entertainment feature. The farmers and sportsmen of the neighborhood started taking Mrs. Bear seriously. Armed for bear, more than a dozen farmers had gathered by the time Robert Wheat, Jr., and Zeigler had hurried by automobile to the Zeigler farm for a rifle. The hunt was on and the hunters beat the woods until after dark, desisting ,only to wait for daylight. Robert Bowersox and William Klohr, who shot at the bear when it appeared on the Klohr farm, near McDonogh, joined the hunt with rifles and dogs. And now, after two weeks of frolic in the woods about Soldier's Delight the bear may as well surrender, for it was asserted on good authority that Marshal C. E. Stansbury and Lieut. William D. Dorsey of Pikes-ville police, have decided the bear is a menace to public safety as well as a disturbing element and a disorderly character. So they are going out to take it—dead or alive. ----------o---------- SUBSCRIPTION DANCE AT WHITE HALL FRIDAY. The White Hall Social Club was entertained by Mr. William Kenly recently. The club will give a subscription dance in the hall at White Hall on Friday night, July 11. BALTIMOREAN VISITING AT WHIE HALL AND VICINITY. Mr. Alfred W. Curry, of Baltimore city, is spending some time among friends at White Hall and vicinity. ,------------0--------- OUTSKIRTS OF BUTLER DEVOTED TO "AFRICAN GOLF" The other night a representative of The Jeffersonian had some business to attend to at Butler, that quiet little village nestling among the hills up on the Western Run and returning "lamped" a game of unique African golf. At the fork of the roads just past where former Sheriff J. Carroll Ensor resides, the flickering of four or five candles stuck in the ground attracted attention, and as The "Jeff" representative's machine went slowly past "the bones" were rolling in dust, and some paper money could be seen on the roadside. The indulgers numbered six or seven whites and blacks. TOWSON M. E. SUNDAY SCHOOL PICNIC JULY 30TH. The Towson M. E. APPEALS FOR CONTINUANCE OF SIDEWALK CONSTRUCTION. The "sidewalk tax" having been eliminated for the year 1924, and the fact that individual assessments would have been $5.00, the Towson Town Club is requesting all residents to subscribe this amount to a general fund to provide walks in some sections of the town which are badly needed. In a letter sent residents the Club states that several important pieces of sidewalks are contemplated, chiefly that along the York Road from Willow avenue to Linden Terrace. ----------o---------- GUESTS OF MONKTON RELATIVES.
