Page 8—Saturday, July 5, 1924. THE JEFFERSONIAN, TOWSON, MARYLAND DAILY REHEARSAL FOR MOB SCENE CONTINUES IN GOTHAM. Glorious Fourth Does Not Mar Activities Of Political Stage Manageers To Pick Leading Man. (Continued from Page 1) read the good news but his own folks gathered around the kitchen range. The daily rehearsal for the mob scene in Madison Square Garden took place as usual on the glorious Fourth, with the stage managers trying to select the leading man, but little progress has been made with the title role or the chorus of more than a thousand, although the fight scenes are very realistic. McAdoo waits in the wings as "the girl of the golden West," while Bill Bryan, the popular runner, is ready and willing to go on the stage. The Hawaiian delegation is all dolled up for the occasion. The bureau had many calls for lost wives. Some thirty States have definitely decided to make Madison Square their permanent headquar-' ters, some of the women have even planned playgrounds in the corners for their children and it is rumored the aisles will be converted into lettuce aand tomato patches. In 1920 the Democrats didn't have so much trouble to nominate a candidate, hence folks are aasking why so long now? However, the Baltimore struggle was long and bitter, and for the same reason. The Democrats at Madison Square Garden know that they are naming the next President of the United States, just as they knew it at the Baltimore convention. Do you think for one moment that any of the aspirants would go through such an ordeal for just a nomination? Candidates and their supporters believe the nomination is equivalent to election and that's the cause of a dead-lock. No, they'd never sweat and suffer unless they felt success meant the White House. Everyone remembers the Taft fight 12 years ago, and Calvin Cool-idge has no more chance now than Taft had then. Any man or woman who followed the proceedings of the last congress or reviewed returns of 1922 will see how the tide haas turned against the Republicans, and the fact that Coolidge will go into the campaign as better than his party will make no difference. In 1922 the Democrats elected in neary every State a Senator and, carried some sections that were reputed Republican strongholds. Since then the Western Republicans have united with the Democrats in Congress to defeat almost every policy with Coolidge recommended. There is no evidence that the voters of the great Northwest, who voted against the Republicans in 1922, will return this year to their party; on the contrary, the antagonism this year is greater than it was in 1922. The Republicans cannot hope to carry Indianna, partly because the Republican Governor is serving time in the Federal Penitentiary at Atlanta, and in Illinois they are well aware of the fact that they have an uphill fight, because their candidate for Governor is discredited. There is no doubt that the Democrats can carry Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and the Solid South in addition to Indiana and probably Ohio. If the Democrats are fortunate enough to name a genuine progressive for the Presidency, Lafollette will support him and if they select a conservative the Northwest will( turn to Lafollette. It may carry the election to the House and then Coolidge will have no chance, for concerted action by the Democrats and Progressives will give them control of the next administration. Don't forget that this is a Democratic year. COUNTY POLICE JOIN IN SEARCH OF FARMER MISSING FROM EKLO HOME. Departing He Told Wife Not To Worry If He Did Not Return— Death Of Son Unbalanced His Mind, Members Of Family Say. ANNUAL. STATEMENT. (Continued from Page 1) county and is well known. He is athletic, six feet tall and weighs 180 pounds. The death of a seven-year-old son nine years ago temporarily unbalanced his mind, according to his f.amily. Six years ago he spent five weeks in the Springfield State Hospital, where he recovered his reason. Early last week Young began brooding, it is said. After luncheon Young told his wife he was going into the woods to hunt for a knife. He returned in a few minutes, and told his wife: "If I don't come back don't worry." When he failed to return for supper, Mrs. Young aroused the neighborhood. Fifty neighbors scoured the woods for miles around, but found no trace of the man. Young lived with his wife and daughter, Ruth B. Young. Neither believes he is dead, but that he has wandered away. Young had nn money with him, Mrs, Young said, and was without proper clothing for a prolonged stay away from home. He wore a brown slouch hat, blue shirt and dark trousers. DRAWING SHOWS PROGRESS Plat "Unearthed" Of Ft. Carroll Bears Signature Of Robert E. Lee. A drawing of Fort Carroll, off the Baltimore county water front, showing the progress of the building operations September 3, 1851, and bearing the signature of a captain of engineers, who later gained fame as General Robert E. Lee, of the Confederate States of America, recently was found by Major F. C. Harrington, United States Engineers, in charge of this district. The drawing was discovered by Major Harrington among the archives of his office. He has had it framed and hung on the walls of his office. The drawing shows the fort from an elevation and is marked with pencil notes to indicate the progress of the work. It is indorsed by R. E. Lee, brevet-colonel and captain of engineers, who was in charge of the construction operations. DEATH CLAIMS MRS. SALLIE G. EVANS. DISSIPATING GLOOM Land Is Drying Out Under Skies, Hence Farmers Are Hustling (Continued from Page 1) fered, with average prices the local conditions are not hopeless. It might be well for our farmers to remember.the year 188 9 in order to get encouragement. The files of old Baltimore county newspapers disclose that reports as late as the 10 th of July show that some parts of the county were under water. The long account of conditions carried a gloomy outlook indeed for the farmer. Despite the lateness of the season when corn was planted the crop in most sections was normal and in many larger than the average. In those days corn, wheat and hay were practically the whole oupput of the agricultural section of the county, while today garden trucking, with fruits constitute one of the big factors in our agricultural life. It is true that forecasts based on present conditions will show a material loss from the standard, but these forecasts will improve day by day if weather conditions remain favorable. HOW THIS WOMAN BOTSTRENGTH Put Up 300 Quarts Fruit, 500 Glasses Jelly and Took Care of Four Children Norwalk, Iowa.—" I have been meaning for some time to write and tell you how much good your medicine has done me. When I started to take it I was almost bed fast and would have been in bed all the time if I had had any one to care for my children. There was so much swelling and pain that I could hardly take a step. I took seven bottles of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound and used Lydia E. Pinkham's Sanative Wash, and found that so healing. I am not entirely well yet for I was in bad shape when I started your medicine, but I am so much better that I am not afraid to recommend it, and I think if I keep on taking it, it will cure me. I have done my work all alone this summer, caring for four children, and I canned 300 quarts of fruit and made 600 glasses of jelly, so you see I must be better. I feel pretty good all the time and I am glad to tell others about the medicine."— Mrs. C. J. Wenner-Mark, Box 141, Norwalk, Iowa. Women can depend upon Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound to relieve them from female troubles. For sale by druggists everywhere. Mrs. Sallie Guyton Evans, wife of Dr. Gilman P. Evans, died in Baltimore city. During her youth Mrs. Evans lived in the Eleventh District of this county, and was a sister of James B. Guyton, well-known lawyer. ----------o---------- NEGRO BABY IN PACKAGE FOUND ON EAST TOWSON STREET. Dr. Wm. J. Ebert was aroused from sweet slumbers by a policeman who had found a negro baby in a package on one of the streets in East Towson late one night recently. After viewing the infant Dr. Ebert stated that it had been born but a few hours before it was found. The* child was sent to a Baltimore City hospital. ANNUAL STATEMENT. ANNUAL.
