V V$r\BALTIWO*E Z67S facilities of obtaining news, or that they are great liars." in the war news there is an account of the corporate evacuation of Norfolk and Portsmouth, and the blowing up of the Merri-mac by the Confederates. On May 23, 1862, the editor of the American was mad all over, so he relieved his system of the following: "Having been attacked by a yelping secession cur who is trying to prove that we are and have been an abolitionist, we* can only say that all who know the fool know his character. We have also been slandered and abused by other traitors and rebels recently, both male and female, and we take this occasion to jay that so long as we are at tacked by but two classes, the aristocratic and the pauper secession classes, we do not consider ourselves in much danger. We have heard of slanderous words being used towards us by both male and female traitors, who profess to have a great interest in the eternal nigger, but who are too poor to buy a six months' old darkey when full grown buck niggers were selling at 18 3-4 cents each, and too poverty-stricken to feed one three days if they had him, unless their friends and relations would continue to contribute, as they nave done for years. If this does not serve as a caution to these persons, we will next week give the names of some of them." The court was engaged on May 21 in hearing a case where the defendant was indicted for the forgery of a stallion license. His attorney was the late Bernard Carter, who demurred to the indictment. The demurrer was sustained by the court. No battle of the Civil War was of greater interest to the people of Baltimore county than the battle of Front Royal, where the First Maryland Regiment was overpowered and nearly destroy- ed. A large number of Baltimore county boys were in the engagement, among them our old friend Col. George W. Seipp, the veteran crier of the Circuit Court, who is daily at his post. Hence we give an account of it as it! appeared in the American of May 30, 1962: "The announcement on Saturday morning that Col Kenly's First Maryland Regiment had; met with a severe reverse at Front Royal causing quite an excitement in the city, which continued throughout the day yesterday, and resulted in scenes of dis order and violence. r On Saturday evening a des patch was received from Mar-tinsburg by the brother of Col Kenly, announcing that he had died on the battlefield. Later accounts, however, leave but little doubt that the first account was correct, and that this most gallant officer has fallen a victim to the rebellion. We last evening had an interview with Mr. Joseph Robinson, of Pittsburg, a member of Knapp 's Pennsylvania Battery, who succeeded in making his escape after the battle was over, and collected from him the following particulars: "Col. Kenley's command con-?:«:-x-:-x-:-:-x-H-j-x-x-H-:-x-:-x* sisted of the First Maryland Regi ment, three companies of the Twenty-Ninth Pennsylvania, and }one section of Knapp's Battery, sonsisting of two rifle guns. Whilst the fight was progressing he was also reinforced by two companies of New York cavalry. "The fight commenced on Friday at noon by a strong dash of cavalry, under command of the ONLY 20 FOR THIS SALE} famous Ashby, on the position taken by Col. Kenly, about a mile east of the Shenandoah. After a fight of two hours the enemy was repulsed, with heavy loss, and driven back some distance. i Get the most out of your cattle and poultry by feeding Riverdale Feed for Cattle and Arcady Feed for Poultry.
