A THOUGHT FOR THE DAY. Any man can learn to do anything that any other man ha$ done if he will apply himself to the doing of it. GEORGE WAS RIGHT. ing a handicap to childrens' education, but their health as well. For years the school authorities have trudged along, making the best of existing conditions, but the time has arrived when action—decisive action, must be taken if the boys and girls of today, who will be the citizens of tomorrow, are to advance in brain and body as they are entitled to. Delegation after delegation has from time to time waited on the Board of Education demanding relief from unsanitary, unhealth-ful and overcrowded conditions in the public schools of this county. That the demands were justified will be admitted by any man or woman who will but take the trouble to investigate. In many places portable shacks have been erected adjacent to schools to house the overflow, while in other communities delap-idated halls and ram-shackled old buildings have been rented to help relieve congestion. The urgent demands coming from every section were so pressing that it was a difficult and delicate matter for the Board of Education to decide which were most entitled to relief. There were two ways to remedy the bad housing of our school children. One was by direct taxation; the other by a bond issue. The direct taxation way would have been for the County Commissioners to levy a fixed sum for the improvement of old school houses and the erection of new ones, which would have worked a hardship on all of us. The bond issue decided upon, distributes the amount over a period of years, making the burden a comparatively light one for the taxpayers of today and Avill be borne in part by the very children whose education and healthful surroundings it will improve. LONG GREEN SUNDAY SCHOOL NTO HOLD REUNION. The reunion of the Sunday schools of Long Green M. E. Circuit will be held on Saturday, August 16th, at Greenwood. At the afternoon session the As sistant Secretary of Labor from Washington will be the principal speaker. ----------o---------- ASSUMES DUTIES AS INSURANCE COMMISSIONER. Carville D. Benson, of Halethorpe, this county, new State Insurance Commissioner, assumed the duties of his office this week. Mr. Benson, when he appeared at the Insurance Commissioner's suite in the Union Trust Building, Baltimore city, was met by Harvey Cooper, whom he succeeds. Mr. Cooper was presented with a carving set by employes of the commission, and the incoming commissioner was remembered with a basket of cut flowers. COL. BOWIE'S "WAR HORSE' DIES. George Washington said: "The future of this nation depends on its schools and the kind of education they give." It was a long time ago when "the Father of his country" made this assertion, and in all the welter of opinion and comment today it is well that we retain a healthy sense of values. That the tax burden is a heavy one now, goes Avithout saying— but so long as we continue to pay golden tributes to automobile! manufacturers, filling stations, movie theatres, ice cream parlors, cigar stands and a host of other dealers in luxuries there is but little sanity or good citizenship in any movement that looks toward curtailment of school development. So long as our Government proposes to be a government of the people, for the people and by the people, just so long must it have and loyally support, at no matter how great a sacrifice, its public school system. Baltimore county citizens will be called upon in November to vote on a bond issue, the money from which is urgently needed to rectify deplorable housing conditions of children in various sec-tioim—in fact cattle owned by. some of our stock raisers are quartered in far better buildings than those that cover our children five or six hours every school day. This county is growing by "leaps and bounds"—new developments are springing up here, there and everywhere, hence some of our school buildings are badly overcrowded, not only be: STOP! Towson has two very dangerous street corners; one is at the York Road and Pennsylvania Avenue, the other at Washington and Pennsylvania Avenues, and notwithstanding the fact that The Jeffersonian has on numerous occasions called attention to the dangers at these two places little or nothing has been done to rectify conditions. At both points the street cars of the United Railways & Electric Company turn left and the tracks are so laid that cars making the turns cut the corners completely and invariably round the curves at great speed, endangering anyone who might at the time be driving easterly, for the view of the cross streets are entirely cut off by buildings. Accidents have occurred at these places frequently, and near accidents are a daily occurrence. Probably when someone is badly injured the United will "see the light" and instruct their motor-men to bring cars to a standstill before rounding the curves. If folks would operate automobiles as the United operates its cars around these two corners, they would be very propmtly arrested for violating the rules of the road. And, incidently, may we ask if The Towson Town Club is asleep 1 A famous Maryland war horse is dead. He is Ted, 6T the Fifth Maryland Regiment, the mount of Col. Washington Bowie, Jr. Colonel Bowie Found Ted dead in his stall in the colonel's barn at Lutherville. Why he died no one knows. The day before he had been roaming about the pasture eating grass with all the ease and grace of a war veteran who feels that his work is over and that he has done his best. Perhaps he had colic. Ted was about 14 years old, and he was one Maryland war horse who actually smelled gunpowder. Col. Bowie took him to the Mexican border when the Maryland National Guard went down there about eight years ago. He stayed throughout the entire campaign and came back in a box car, fit as a fiddle. ----------o---------- AUTOS COLLIDE ON YORK ROAD BELOW WILLOW AVENUE. While C. H. Rever, bookkeeper for Henry Reckord, Towson, was coming to work one morning this week, and as he was "crawling through" the passage way on the York road where the United Railways is repairing the tracks south of Willow avenue, a Chevrolet, in a ing car crashed into his Ford and the driver of the Chevrolet, in a stupid drawl said: "I'ss all right friend, i'ss my fault." When Rever got out of his "tin chariot" to ascertain just what damage had been done the other fellow "beat it." Constable Grason arrived oh the scene and after finding some liquor in the car, had it moved to Mason's Garage, instructing the proprietor to let no one have it, but lo and behold, about three hours later the driver wriggled his way into the garage unseen and darted out with his smashed possession. The license plate on the Chevrolet is in the name of J. E. Enders, of Lutherville. SALES AND LEGAL WOTICBS. CELERY PLANTS.
