THE JEFFERSONIAN, TOWSON, MARYLAND Saturday, September 6, 1924—Page 5 DEATH OF WILD, BAD STEER ENDS THREE WEEKS' RAMPAGE IN COUNTY Bull Escapes At Stock Yards And Wages Guerrilla Warfare With Farmers And Amateur "Matadors"—Texas Warrior Finally Shot Near Catonsville. This is the story of a Texas steer, wild -by nature and enraged by environment, that for three weeks conducted a reign of terror in its own way over the western stretches of Baltimore county. But, like many another unmanageable bovine beast, it met its conquerors this week and soon will be served up in juicy steaks and prime' roasts. It was shot and killed on the farm of Charles G. Sauter, Rolling and Johnnycake roads. the itinerant steer, only to flee for their lives. The Texas terror escaped from his keepers three weeks ago while he was being unloaded from a car, along with other cattle, at the stock yards, near Wilkens avenue. He was rearin' to go and went. Over an eight-foot fence he vaulted and thence away to the grounds of St. Mary's Industrial School. Ten men followed him, bent on a speedy capture. Instead, however?, all were driven to the tops of convenient trees and the driver fled to pleasanter fields. A week later the animal turned SALES AND LEGAL NOTICES. John G. PUBLIC SALE —OF— VALUABLE FEE-SIMPLE SHORE PROPERTY KNOWN AS LOTS NOS. 92, 94 AND 95 ON THE PLAT OF TURKEY The encounter in which the wild up on the Sauter farm, five miles roamer of the plains was subdued away. He first was seen by two marked the close of a campaign in which irate farmers, adventure-seeking hunters and plain home protectors did battle frequently with CAPTAIN FORGIVES. When John became repentant Captain Rafuse decided not to press the mutiny charge, and requested Shipping Commissioner A. L. Daugh-erty merely to fine him when the crew was paid off here at the Standard Oil dock. CONVENTION OPENS Towson Lodge Of Elks Well Represented At Ocean City. (Continued from Page 1) has been on the grounds for a week. The decorations on the Breakers Hotel show that he has not been idle and they also give Towson a very prominent place on the map. Judge Duncan motored down with Mr. and Mrs. Wm. P. Cole. Mrs. Cole will visit friends in Salisbury during the convention and return home on Sunday. There has been a severe storm for several days; the ocean has been quite wild, the breakers have dashed over the boardwalk in places and bathing was suspended for several days. Mr. Dehoff took the precaution of taking a life preserver to his room. But all is serene and lovely this morning. The hotels on the boardwalk are very tastefully decorated and the Baltimore street business houses and residences all indicate that the Elks are expected. Mr. William H. Lawrence, accompanied by Mrs. Lawrence and a guest were among the early arrivals. It is impossible at this time to give the roster of Towson Lodge who will attend, as they do not get in until later in the day. The Elks are not the only pebbles on the beach, for the undertakers of the State are here in full force. It is estimated that there are a sufficient number here to bury every Elk in attendance. Isn't it strange you can tell an undertaker among a thousand at a funeral, but you couldn't pick one out of a thousand here. You can scarcely tell them from the Elks and everyone knows there is nothing funereal about the appearance of the average Elk. No doubt the undertakers will keep close watch on the Elks when they venture* out in the surf, so as to be at hand if the worst should come. Someone pulled the following on them the other day at one of their sessions: "I never did like undertakers: They make me nervous. There is one lives right across the Street from me, and a couple of Weeks ago I was taken sick And this bird would come out And 'stand on the walk, and Look up at my window; Then he'd shake his head, Smile, and go back in the house, But I fooled him, though; I got well. When he saw me yesterday, he Said, "Well Hank, I'm glad To see you out again." Like H— he was! I never did like undertakers! They make me nervous." of Mr. Sauter's sons, Charles C. Sauter, Jr., and Grover. They thought to ensnare the roving beast without difficulty, but, like their predecessors in the chase, were routed summarily. * Next the Texas battler was sighted in the forest reserve north of Elli-qott City. A number of persons were reported to have run for their lives after they sought to interfere with the beast in spite of the fact that his style was cramped by the limited acreage in the vicinity— limited, that is, as compared with the broad pastures of Texas. About a week ago the Sauter boys saw the animal on their farm again and organized a hunting party. Scores of farmers joined in the hunt, but by the time they prepared for the chase ttjeir quarry had slipped away. This week he again came back to the Sauter farm. This time the owners of the steer were notified of the animal's reappearance and asked to send a butcher. Henry Fleischer and three assistants, all armed, were dispatched to the farm. Fleischer fired at the beast from behind a. tree and the bullet grazed its spine. The steer snorted and charged at the man, sending him to cover. Three or four subsequen shots fired from ambush brough the steer to the ground. Fleischer approached the animal and it tried| to continue the fight, although un able to rise to its feet. A final sho at close range was necessary to en its life. The packers have promised th Sauter family the finest cutting o meat from the animal. POINT FARM,.
