It was a bit chilly and Luke decided to throw a blanket over the engine to keep it warm. He did, and a little negro boy who was standing on the pavement spoke up, saying: "Say, yo' Hayseed, ain't no use coverin' that thing up—everybody knows it's ah Fo'd." How do they know, except from memory, whether they are larger one year than another? How often does memory play tricks on the best of us, especially when it is exercised in a strictly seasonable manner? "We have a number of squirrels in the woods here and the little fellows are so tame they almost eat out of our hands. They are as fat as butter-balls at this time of the year, fat from overindulgence in the bounties of nature and of neighbor-hoo dbackyard liberality. "I feed them peanuts and when they have surfeited they bury what they cannot eat, just as a fed-up dog buries a bone. The act has no special significance, to my mind, except that it is the nature of the animal to store up in days of plenty for the season of scarcity. "Fruit trees, nut trees and most growing perennials have their off years in bearing, largely the result of seasonal conditions, not of the future, but of the past. I believe it is with nature as with man. The hindsight is much keener than the foresight." »*??+??*++««*+«+«?*««*«*** i i ! Mcintosh. Local Democrats are confident that Baltimore county has an opportunity to again win the honor of being a banner Democratic county of Maryland. John W. Davis, the Party's nominee for the Presidency, was a popular favorite here long before the New York convention. While there was a substantial representation of both Smith and McAdoo sentiment, the New York "pow wow" left no sore spots among county Democrats and it is believed all workers will turn out enthusiastically to insure success. Democrats of Baltimore county are prepared to wage an energetic fight for the election of the ticket in November. There has been a number of conferences at which plans have been perfected and much interest is manifested in the rank and file of the party. In spite of the Republican propaganda contained in various straw vote contests by leading periodicals, the partisan leanings in which are so apparent, there are many growing indications that the country is turning to Davis and Bryan. "Boost the home team JOIN the crowd that follows the local team this fall. There will be lots of jolly parties every Saturday afternoon while the season lasts. Make up a party of football fans and take them along in the car each time the team goes out of town. Plan to make it the first leg of a week-end trip. It's a wonderful time of the year to be out in the open. Sunny but bracing, glorious views, autumn colors. Add to that the thrills of a well fought game, congenial companions, the spirit of the crowd. There's nothing like it for developing a healthy appetite and taking your mind off your work. Better get the car all ready Friday evening. Slip around to the nearest ^Standard" pump and fill her up with gas, oil, air and water. You'll want a quick getaway and no stops on the way, for everyone wants to be there on time. "Standard" will do it too, for there is nothing like it for quick starting and long mileage. CRANE'S 215 E. Baltimore St. (Continued from Page 1) the attitude and utterances of certain partisan correspondents, who are now beginning to qualify their predictions of the President's election. Among the Republican managers at Washington there is a panic as the reports of Republican defections to Davis come in streams from the Middle West and- trans-Missis-sisippi region. On his second trip to the Central West, Davis stirred thousands of, voters to the highest pitch of en-| thusiasm and begot confidence in the Democratic organizations of every State he visited. The whole situa-; tion has changed in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri since Mr. Davis's addresses in various parts of those States. Democrats are now convinced that 'Coolidgje can not carry Indiana, and he has no chance to get the electoral vote of Missouri. J The Republican row in Kansas, where William Allen White is an independent candidate for the governorship, has menaced Coolidge's earlier prospects and turned the tide towards Davis. In Illinois LaFol-lette's strength is derived almost wholly from the Republican rank and file. In the central part of that State a trustworthy poll shows that for every Democrat who has turned to LaFollette ten Republicans have joined his forces. Following this violent reversal of conditions in the Middle West, it can be asserted with all positiveness: First. President Coolidge will receive no "Harding majorities" even in States that are conceded to him, including Massachusetts. Second. The LaFollette vote in the Central States will be won almost wholly from the Republican party. Third. Davis will carry every "border State" and all the States in the Southwest. Fourth. LaFollette will take from Coolidge at least six States— Wisconsin, and five west of the Mississippi river. Fifth. All the changes tatting place now and likely to take place before the election are and will be in favor of Davis and to the detriment of Coolidge. The Republican managers are badly frightened and privately admit that their claims of two and three weeks ago will have to be revised downward. Meantime the Democrats, on the basis of actual investigations, are adding to the number of States "sure and probable" for Davis. —------o--------- MAX STRUCK BY UNIDENTIFIED AUTOIST.
