The Federal Government in the last fiscal year received $16,000,000 more from the people of Maryland in various forms of direct taxation than the amount received by the State government from taxation and other receipts. The amount received from Maryland by the Federal Government in that year from income and miscellaneous taxes was $34,349,218. This sum is within $150 of the amount to be raised through taxation and miscellaneous charges by the City Government this year. The State Government for the fiscal year ended September 30, 1923, the last for which figures are available, received approximately $18,000,000 from taxes and other charges, exclusive of loan proceeds. The amount obtained from Mary-landers for the Federal Government, therefore, is more than $16,000,000 greater than the sum raised by the State for its expenses. City officials, commenting on these figures, painted out that the Federal Government's total for Maryland does not include indirect forms of taxation, such as customs duties, collected from Marylanders at other places and other charges, such as tobacco taxes, charged against manufacturers who pass the taxes on to the consumer. Estimates of this indirect taxation which Maryland helps to pay are not available, but if it were added to the amount mentioned above as obtained in Maryland, it is estimated that the grand total contributed by Maryland, directly or indirectly, to the Federal Government would exceed the amount to be raised by Baltimore city this year in various forms of taxation and might even surpass the total that the State and city governments will levy for their expenses. ----------o---------- ACTION OF GRAND JURY SOUGHT IN FATALITIES. Time went by and every little while a deposit would be made by him. His highest salary during this time was only $800 a year. Now he has $4000.00 here on deposit. If he could accomplish this with his small income, what could you do if you tried to consistently save ?
