Page 8—Saturday, April 12, 1924. THE JEFFERSONIAN, TOWSON, MARYLAND STATE HEALTH OFFICIAL TO INSPECT COUNTY DAIRIES—CO-OPERATION SOUGHT Efforts Will Be Made To Bring Product To Highest Standard-General Opinion Now Is That Supply Of Milk Is Good. A milk survey in this community will be begun within a week, A. L. Sullivan, Commissioner of Food and Drugs of the State Health Department stated to a representative of The Jeffersonian. The main object of the survey is to encourage milk dealers and producers to co-operate with State officials in getting better milk, Mr. Sullivan said. "We plan to inspect milk dairies,'" he said, "and determine the amount of pasteurized milk and raw milk sold; how much milk comes from tuberculin-tested cows and how much from non-tested cows, how much butter fat, water, solid matter and bacteria is in the milk. After the survey a comlete report showing the character of the milk sold will be sent to the towns. *****?•???????????? * * VA*V***A*V***»**W******%S V Y t 1 1 Y V T Y Y Y Y Y Y Y I WILLIAM H. Gilmor 2240-J Baltimore, Md HOW'D YOU LIKE THIS MOVING DAY BILL Shifting Telephones From One Location To Another Costs $20,000,000 A Year. Most people give little thought to what "moving day" means for the telephone company. When the streets are choked with vans and vehicles of every description carrying household goods to new quarters, telephones also must he checked up, taken out and reinstalled. A family may get along for a while without dishes, pictures and the piano—but the telephone is well nigh indispensable. What this increased demand for installations means even to a single telephone company in a single state is shown by a recent survey of the three Ohio cities of Cleveland, Dayton and Columbus, made by the Ohio Bell Telephone- Company. This survey disclosed that the service of the average Cleveland user is disconnected every twenty-seven months. For the five-year period ending with December, 1921, there were 304,674 disconnections for less than 140,000 subscribers. The telephone of the average subscriber in Dayton, the statistics showed, Is changed every twenty months. In Columbus, the Bell engineers found that forty-two per cent, of the new subscribers quit within a year, sixty-three per cent, within two years, while nine per cent, used their telephones less than three months. When it is considered, in addition, that the average Ohio family moves every twenty-five months, the problems presented to the telephone company by "moving day," are self-evident. What is true in Ohio is true elsewhere, and it has been estimated that the cost to the Bell Telephone System as a whole for installing and removing telephones is $20,000,000 annually. In addition to the large force of men needed for putting in, taking out and transferring telephones, a numerous clerical staff must also be maintained to take care of the book end of the business. 16,000,000 MILES OF WIRE TO RUN THROUGH TUNNEL World's Deepest Telephone Subway Now Being Bored Beneath New York City Streets. With subway trains roaring overhead, their passengers unaware of the engineering feat being performed beneath them, the deepest underground channel for telephone cables in the world is being constructed in New York City. A new group of telephone buildings is being erected on West Thirty-sixth street where some day eight central offices will be in operation, serving the Times Square-Pennsylvania section of the city. Here, two large shafts, each 50 feet deep, were sunk into bedrock on either side of Seventh Avenue, and a cross town tunnel blasted between, 25 feet beneath the tracks of the Inter-borough subway. When completed, the conduit system will be capable of carrying nearly 350,000 separate telephone wires. It will measure 242,000 duct feet which is sufficient to contain about 16,000,000 miles of telephone wire in cables of 1,200 pairs each. The tunnel itself is eight feet wide and eight feet high, hewn out of solid bedrock 50 feet below the surface. TELEPHONE "STILL ALARMS" ARE INCREASING RAPIDLY Fire department records from the larger cities show a great increase in the number of still alarms in the last two years.. A still alarm is usually one that is reported over the telephone, and more and more are people becoming accustomed to telephoning their calls for firemen. One reason why so many still alarms are sent in is that people have discovered a quicker route to get word to the firemen than by running out of doors and hunting for the nearest fire alarm box. This does not mean that the fire alarm boxes have outlived their use They are still considered vital ad juncts to the city fire service, but the increase in the number of calls for fire service that come over the tele nlione is noteworthy. The city of Springfield, Massachusetts, which has practically the same population as Auckland, has nearlj three times as many telephones as the New Zealand city. (Continued from Page 1) never contemplated an inquisition by Senate committees." It is probably true that former Secretary Fall didn't' contemplate that either. Josiah Dearborn, president of the Republican club, which was Mr. Butler's host, was not proud of the present or the recent Republican Congress which the orators and candidates of his party will have to defend in the next campaign. "The statesmen who two years ago pronounced Congress at its lowest depths was right," said Mr. Dearborn. General Manager Butler is the Republican Federal machine"s candidate for Senator from Massachusetts. He would doubtless have the support of Wool Trust and the Cotton Textile Trust. RITCHIE'S BOOM FOR PRESIDENCY EMERGES FROM MERE NEBULOUS INTO POSSIBILITY. Fact That He Has Been Asked To Speak At Jefferson Day Dinner Regarded By Wise-Acres As Being Indication Of His Having A Chance (Continued from Page 1) Ritchie for President it should develop out of this State, and not originate as a favorite-son movement. That the Governor is being considered is at least a, possibility by national Democratic leaders is indicated by the fact the he has been asked to speak at the Jefferson Day dinner to be given by the Democratic National Club at the Hotel Commodore Saturday evening. On this occasion various possibilities for the Democratic Presidential nomination will be an evidence, among them Underwood of Alabama and "Al" Smith of New York. The main objections to Ritchie as a serious Presidential possibility often have been expressed. For one thing he comes from a State which has but few votes in the Electoral College, so that the carrying of his own State would be but of small advantage. For another thing, he is considered by the drys as a champion of the wets, though most of the Governor's utterances have been less against Volsteadism specifically than in favor of State's rights generally. SWAN CAPTURED. A swan was captured at Blue Mount during the high water of last week on the Gunpowder River and apparently has been domesticated, as it is very quiet and not afraid of any one. POLICE ONCE BANNED TELEPHONE AS NUISANCE When the telephone was first introduced in police headquarters Chicago—in 1885—it was regarded as a nuisance and was soon removed to an outer office. It is hard in these days, though, to visualize a police department successfully operating without the aid of the telephone. . As a crime detector the telephone is of incalculable aid. It also serves as a crime deterrent, for criminals know that their chances of being caught are Increased by the wide use of the telephone. If it were not for the patrol box and police alarm system, many criminals would succeed in making their escape, but so quickly are alarms and descriptions now flashed to all stations that arrests are often made before the culprit can get beyond the city limits. BIGGEST DIRECTORY. The latest "Who's Who" of New York telephone users, which has just been issued, is the largest telephone directory ever published. It contains 765,000 listings, an increase of 47,000 over the previous issue, and includes 1772 pages. There now are 129 central offices in the greater city. A year ago there were 110. .
