THE JEFFERSONIAN, TOWSON, MARYLAND Saturday April 5, 1924—Page 3 PEDESTRIANS MUST HELP TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS-PROPER REGULATION OF TRAFFIC ESSENTIAL ALSO Trouble Now Is That State Laws Conflict With Community Ordinances, Making It Impossible For Motorists And Those Using "Shank's Mare" To Know "What's What." Proper regulation of traffic and education of pedestrians are the two most needed requirements for reduction of the number of traffic accidents, according to A. B. !C. Hardy, president of Olds Motor Works and a member of the traffic and safety committee of the National Automobile Chamber of Commerce. He de-| ciared that every automobile associa-j tion, dealer and owner should bring pressure on their city and State officials until progressive plans of traffic regulation and education were accomplished facts. In the regulation of traffic Mr. Something for Everybody AT Miller's Stock-Taking Sale Remember, you choose from our entire stock at this sale—our regular stock, an immense gathering- of everything desirable in Diamonds, Watches and Silverware at Discounts 10% to 50°/o How about a Fine Elgin Watch? River 7-W Hardy advocates the following salient ideas: National co-ordination of traffic laws so that automobile drivers will be governed by but one set of rules. Designating certain streets that have no street car traffic in large cities for automobile use. Discouraging driving of automobiles on principal city thoroughfares that carry heavy street car traffic. This can be done by eliminating right and left hand turns at each corner. Detailing traffic policemen at all important intersections in the city and at important State and county road crossings out of the cities on week-ends and holidays when traffic is heavy. Strict enforcement of the old rule now almost forgotten that slow moving vehicles must keep to right of the road. This to apply both in and outside cities. "The very multiplicity of traffic laws and ordinances in the various States, and, in fact, adjoining municipalities, mitigates against their proper enforcement," said Mr. Hardy. "It is no impossible task for the 48 States to codify their laws so that all will be the same, and there is no reason why every municipality should not adapt their ordinances to the State law. If they must differ, let them differ as to the penalty to be inflicted. "One of the great problems in all cities is that of congestion, which also tends to increase the accident hazard. The tendency in the more progressive municipalities is to do everything possible to separate automobile and street car traffic. This is proving a boon to the pedestrians, street car riders an dautomobile operators, and should be inaugurated more extensively in every closely populated center in the country. The quickness and ease with which automobile traffic is handled on Fifth avenue, New York; Second boulevard, Deetroit, and Michigan boulevard, Chicago, are but three instances that prove the feasibility of this plan. "As to the need of more traffic policemen at important intersections, including main traveled roads outside cities, this is so well recognized that comment is unnecessary." 2 BRITISH PLANES LIKELY TO ENTER SCHNEIDER RACE. Keep Your Valuables and Your Important Papers In the New Burglar-Proof and Fire-Proof Vault in the Overlea Bank They will be safe there and always at hand when you need them. Entry of two British seaplanes in the Jaques Schneider international seaplane race to be held along the Baltimore county water front next October has been decided upon tentatively, according to a dispatch from London. The entry will be made, it is believed, by the Royal Aero Club of London. The British Air Ministry has offered to purchase the British machine for £3,000, without the engine, if it wins the race. The 1922 contest for the Schneider cup was won by a British flyer at Naples. Three Italian hydroplanes will compete in the race, it has been announced. Plans now are being made to house the competing planes at Bay Shore Park, where the contest will be held. HEALTH OFFICIAL URGES VACCINATION FOR EVERYONE. As a preventative measure against smallpox, a number of cases of which have bee discovered in this community, everyone in the coiinty should be successfully vaccinated, says Dr. Walter S. Carswell, secretary to the Health Department of Baltimore County. "There is no necessity to become alarmed over the smallpox situation, but as a means of blocking what might easily develop into an epidemic everyone in Baltimore county shoud be successfully vaccinated." FLAMES FROM INCUBATOR DAMAGE SUBURBAN HOME. Fire, which started from an incubator in the home of John Maag, Stonewall Park, west of Catonsville, caused $500 damage to the dwelling. At the time Mrs. Phillips was on her way from Aberdeen to Washington, after making arrangements for the removal of her husband's body.
