| THE J*. ZRSONIAN, TOWSON, MARYLAND Saturday, March 29, 1924—Page 9 PROTECT HOMES FROM DRAFTS BY INSULATION—GOOD CONSTRUCTION WILL ASSURE COMFORT—SAVE FUEL Houses Poorly Designed And Miserably Built Are Just As Uncomfortable And Burn Just As Much Coal Today As Did Counterparts 20 Years Ago. One of the biggest helps good architectural service gives a home builder is freedom from "draughty" rooms; rooms where one sits on a chilly Sunday morning, with one's feet next the sizzling radia+or, while the "draught" seems to rustle the morning news in one's hands and send unpleasant shivvers up and down one's spine. Most everyone can remember at least one house of this type. They are still built, hundreds of them every year. The ornate "gingerbread" effects in millwork are no longer used. The MT. CAHMEJL COUPI/E WED. A very pretty wedding was solemnized at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Martitf, Hampstead, when Edgar F. Benson, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Benson, of Mt. Carmel, and Edna Grace, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin, were united in marriage by Rev. Clarkson R. Banes. The bride was attired in a gown of white silk canton crepe and wore a bridal veil of white silk net. She carried a bouquet of white roses. Music for the ewedding was played yb Beulah Adele Resh, of Baltimore. After the ceremony the young couple left for an extended honeymoon. BAGGAGE MASTER OF B. & O FOUND DYING AT END OF RUN. Joseph Salmon, 74 years old, of Catonsville, employed for more than 40 years by the Baltrmore and Ohio Railroad, died shortly after completing his regular run from Philadelphia to Baltimore. When the train from Philadelphia, due at Mount Royal Station at 9.10 P. M., arrived Mr. Salmon did not appear at the door of the baggage car as had been his custom. An investigation was made. Mr. Salmon was found unconscious in the baggage end of the club car. Orders were given to speed to Camden station. On arrival there Mr. Salmon was moved in a private ambulance to the office of Dr. Harry K. Gorsuch, 114 West Saratoga street, who pronounced him dead. ----------o---------- YOUNGSTE RDROWNS IN UAKE ROLAND. Solomon Eisenberg, 13 years old, of Baltimore city, was drowned in Lake Roland, when he slipped from an improvised raft in mid-stream. Dr. Josiah Bowen, representative of the State Department of Health, with offices at Towson, witnessed the accident as he was going past. With the aid of grappling hooks, Sergt. Walters and Officer Hughes, of Essex, dispatched to the scene by Chief of Police Stansbury, recovered the body. ----------o---------- SCHOOL BOARD TO MEET TUESDAY. The Baltimore County School Board will meet on Tuesday. ----------o---------- WHITE HALL BOOK CLUB ENTERTAINED. Mrs. William P. Bosley entertained the White Hall Book Club on Tuesday afternoon. big chilly hallways have gone; but the "draughts" remain. Houses poorly designed and poorly built are just as uncomfortable and burn just as much coal today as did their counterparts of 20 yeears ago. They are still the wastrels of America and they cost us hundreds of carloads of coal as well as many mornings of discomfort every year. The most common causes of draughty and cold houses are uninsulated walls, no caulking around window frames, lack of "beam fills" at foundation line, incorrectly placed radiators and uninsulted roofs. Let us analyze the first of these items: Insulation of walls and roof means placing some heavy insulation between or on the studding on all outside walls and across the ceiling joists. This insulation contains thousands of tiny air cells which make a barrier to the passage of heat or cold through walls and roof. The cold which travels through unprotected walls chills the air next to the wall. Cold air settles and heated air rises, setting up a circulation of draught with the air near the radiator rising rapidly and traveling along the ceiling up the staircase and on out through the roof and the col dair traveling down the outside walls and along the floors. Insulation prevents this circulation by confining the air cells in tiny particles within the texture of the material itself. Insulation should be covered in the specifications. For the outside walls and ceiling it shoul dbe tough and durable, so that it will stay put as long as your house stands. Some manufacturers guarantee this for their material. Look over your job after the insulation is applied. Make sure every sheet runs the whole distance from the bottom sill to the top plate. See that the places over and between the windows and doors are as carefully lined as the larger ones. Make sure that the top-story ceiling or the roof is lined in the same way, and by a material ust as sound as that used for the side walls. Caulking around frames: This part of our house is going to be completely covered by plaster. If you don't make sure it is done right, you cannot change it afterwards. It will pay you to make sure while the opportunity exists. The other items of caulking around window frames, filling in with masonry between the joists where they rest on the wall, and placing the radiators where they should be, must be followed with proper care as to details to give you a house that will be easy to get warm and which will stay warm. Like every other thing of this kind about small house construction, there are problems of materials and workmanship that must be in the hands of experts. ?SAFETY FIRST" AT COCKEYS-VILLE APRIL 11 AND 12.
