Falling from a coal car which he was helping to unload, Ernest Briggs, aged 60, died at the Mt. Hope Retreat. The man had been an inmate of the institution for 30 years and had no relatives. Helena Rebekah Lodge No. 66, of Dundalk, held rehearsals on Tuesday night in the I. O. O. F. Gen. Augustine Justo, Minister of War of Argentine, South America, and General Dellepaine, head of the military forces of Buenos Aires, fought a duel with swords, both being slightly wounded. BANDITS GET $30,000 IN GEMS. Three small leather bags containing diamonds valued at $30,000 were stolen by two armed men who held up a taxicab in Detroit, in which Henry Davidson, a salesman, was a passenger. • EIGHT KILLED WHEN BOATS CRASH. Eight persons were killed when the U. S. Line Steamship "American Merchant" collided with the cargo boat, Matatna, near London. $3,000 WORTH OF CLOTHING STOLEN. Clothing valued at $3,000 was stolen from a store on the principal street of Frederick. Officers followed the robbers' car 20 miles when they were outdistanced. PLANE BURIED IN MUD. A Belgian military airplane fell 2000 feet into m«^L near Hasselt, Brussels, killing tw\ officers. Nine hours' work was requ ''ed to dig the machine out. ONE PER CENT. OF ALL LIQUOR SEIZED IS GENUINE. Good whiskey is now impossible to obtain, according to H. M. Luckett, U. S. divisional prohibition chief, of Washington. In a report to Roy A. Haynes, federal prohibition commissioner, Luckett says only one per cent, of the liquor seized in Maryland and the District of Columbia is genuine. EGGS AT BOTTOM. No further drop in egg prices is looked for by dealers. The wholesale price was 22-24 cents this week, the Baltimore market being lower than anywhere else in the country. Retail prices remain at 35 cents. EDITOR OF BEAUTY MAGAZINE SAYS BOBBED HAIR IS MAKING WOMEN BALD. Bobbed hair is a sure means of causing baldness and it won't be many years before the world is filled with bald-headed women, Joseph Byrne, editor of a beauty magazine, said in addressing the annual convention of the American Master Hair Dressers' Association held in New York City. Milliners' he said, to conform to present-day hair style, have been obliged to make head bands exceedingly tight to keep the hats on, resulting in the death of the hair. Mr. Byrne asserted that girls of the present generation would be bald before they reached maturity. e************************ SKELETONS FOUND BELIEVED THOSE OF 1776 WAR VICTIMS. Ten skeletons, believed to be those of American soldiers and sailors who were starved to death on British prison ships in Wallabout Creek during the Revolutionary War, were unearthed near Fort Green Park, in Brooklyn, by laborers who were digging a manhole. Anti-Saloon League, and who as head of the organization in New York, was convicted of forgery, has begun to serve a 2-year sentence in "Sing-Sing" Prison. SHIP USES $29,000 LIQUOR CARGO AS FUEL. How the skipper of the steamer Maria, liquor laden, converted his storm-tossed craft into an alcohol burner during a gale that threatened to swamp the ship, was told by members of the crew when the ship put into port after a 24-day voyage from Havana. The Maria, formerly a Cuban gunboat, carried 7,000 cases of alcohol. The liquor fuel was valued at $259,-000. The steamer set out from Havana, bound for St. Pierre, with 10,-000 cases of assorted liquors and alcohol. She encountered terriffic gales and was forced far off her course when the coal gave out and the Maria was converted into an alcohol burner. The members of the crew were weak from hunger when the vessel dropped anchor. ----------o---------- FLOODS AND FROST HURT FRANCE'S WHEAT CROP.
