What It Does Demands Support Of Right Thinking And Right Living People, Says Rev. Richard H. Wickes, Pastor Of Calvary Baptist Church, Towson. (Continued from Page 1) reared for a time under the influence of a church, yet somehow have received the wrong impression of what it is striving to do in the world. And for this reason refuse to give the church their support. They become indifferent if not hostile and feel that it has nothing to contribute to community life. But the church is of value because of its contribution. The church is the only organization that persistently and consistently holds ideals before the eyes of men. It has become an indoor sport to ridicule a man of ideals. So-called practical men seek to heap ridicule upon such men and with a scornful curl of the lip call them "idealists." They mean by the use of this word that they are rattle-brained fellows who will do well enough in class room or socialistic meetings but are hopeless in the field of every-day work. The idealist, however, is the man who leavens the world. He is the man who believes in youth. He sees the "spark of divinity" where others see only lip stick and bobbed hair. He is the man who believes enough in mankind to believe that the day will come when fire and gas and bayonet will give way to the power of love. He is the man who works to see love put in the place of tricky politicians and crafty treaty makers. He is the man who would find good in Germany and others of his enemies. The idealist is the man who believes that "business will pick up." He is not one who sits in the sun-filled room and dreams of a Utopia, but is everywhere in life, in the thick of it, striving, working to have men believe in their fellows. He is the man who has brought the world as far as it has come in its march toward the goal of perfection. It is the idealist who has given the world its most perfect art. He has looked into the heavens and seen not only lazily floating clouds of summer, but that this same heaven was peopled with angels of God". He has looked into the heart of man and seen there not only sin, but the possibility of making man other than sinner. None other than the idealist dare try to place upon canvas the face of the Man of Nazareth. He is the man who in picture and story has brought the beautiful before your eyes and left the ugly and sordid for the police reporter. It is the idealist who has written the best books that rest upon the shelves of book lovers. He is the man who writes the best books for your children. He is the man who looks upon business not as a cutthroat game but as an opportunity to serve his fellow workers. Without him some place in the make-up of the world, business would go to ruin over night. Woodrow Wilson was an idealist. George Washington was an idealist. Every man who put his name to the Declaration of Independence was an idealist. Every school teacher who believes in her work is an idealist. Every servant of God, be he Jew or Christian, is an idealist. Take the idealists from the world and society would go to smash in twenty-four hours. And every such man is the gift of the church. And then the church is the place in which the Bible is taught. But you ask the value of the Bible? This is the Book that teaches men to guard against the mistakes that other men have made in days beyond recall. Here we find the record of men and nations that have sought to grow and have left God out of their calculations. This is the Book without which no man's education is complete. Theodore Roosevelt said: "Almost every man who has by his life-work added to the sum of human achievement of which the rr/ie is proud, almost every such man has based his life-work largely upon the teachings of the Bible.." This is the tbook that holds the teachings of the Man who tried to lift the world above its common living. It is here that men find that they "shall not lay up treasures upon the earth where moth and rust corrupt." It is here that men are taught to love their neighbors. To keep this Book before men is a distinct contribution of the church. The church is always trying to make men good citizens. Men at Annapolis or Harrisburg or Albany or Washington may make laws, but without the moral teachings of the church the effort may just as well be put to raising potatoes. In a report of a Home Missions Council representing twenty-two denominations we find this: "Vast sections of Kentucky and Tennessee, once fairly churched, have been abandoned. In one of these communities killings are going on at the rate of one a week, while in another twelve murders were committed in four days." Think what would happen if all churches everywhere were destroyed. To have a church in a community on the job and working means less police and less crime. Again, where you find the church you find a higher home life. Where father and mother and children put themselves under the instruction of the church there you find home life based not upon selfishness, but service. Homes that would otherwise be broken because of domestic discord are held together during the critical time. Later husband and wife look back and see that the trial and questions were petty. A minister of experience said: "I have never known a case where young people who had married and were constant | 2500 TONS < ? «? Galvanized Flat and Corrugated Sheets For Garages and Barns WM. A. CONWAY 620-628 Forrest Street Cheapest House In Baltimore PHONE VERNON 2751-1999 We Deliver Everywhere in church service ever had serious domestic difficulty that they could not settle without the use of the divorce court." So far as the moral tone of our nation is concerned this one contribution of the church would entitle it to the whole-hearted support of the community. These things being true, let every man who believes in striving to lift the world to a high type of life support his church. Every man who feels that good citizens are a necessity should work with his church. Every man and woman who knows that an unbroken home is an asset in our national budget should see that the church is helped in this needed work. ENGAGEMENT ANNOUNCED.
