To Cope With Work.
The Maryland State Police continued to function efficiently during the year just closed, although again was handicapped by the recurring labor turnover, which in turn was due in no small measure to the long hours, arduous and hazardous nature of the work with small pay.
As was the case in past years, the members of the force, after taking advantage of the special training schools, developed into good .material on the Maryland highways, only to be offered better positions in simi-

lar lines of work, but with increased pay as inducement.
"It is with profound regret I report the death of two members of the uniform force from injuries received in the discharge of their duties," Commissioner Baughman said.
On April 18, 1923, Patrolman William G. Lohner, of Mount Pleasant, Md., apparently while pursuing a speeding automobile on the road between the Delaware Line and Elk-ton, suffered an accident in which he sustained injuries from which he died on April 20. Patrolman Loch-ner was found beside the highway by a passing motorist who notified other officers patrolling in the same neighborhood.
He was unconscious when found and never regained consciousness. The exact circumstances surrounding the accident have never been satisfactorily cleared up, although a most thorough investigation was done to that end.
On May 27, 1923, Patrolman Raymond P. Eichlotz, while patrolling the Frederick road, was endeavoring to overtake and apprehend a speeding motorist, when, as he approached an intersection, another automobile failed to give the officer the right of way with the result that Patrolman Eichlotz was in collision with the car and sustained injuries from which he died within a few hours.
During the year the men of the force patroled 495,842 miles of highway and were on duty for a total of 170,326 hours, both in mile-
age and hours exceeding considerably the showing made in the previous year. The patrol duty shows that not alone in the pleasant or1 summer months, but during the severe winter days, members of the force were actively at work on their posts.
Besides 139 special assignment, policing and handling traffic, as well as assuming entire responsibility for the parking arrangements at county fairs, carnivals, picnics and similar affairs, the members operated in the following list of cases:
Escorting pay rolls, etc. . . . 44 Guards for prisoners in transit.................. 4

Larceny............... 3
Hold-ups............... 2
Runaway minors restored to

Abduction.............. l
Forest fires............. 12
Disorderly conduct....... 1

Because of the growing demand upon the uniform force, the Com missioner petitioned the Governor for provision for a total of 50 uniformed officers for active work on the roads. This is in addition to provision for an additional personnel of 12 men to be used in demonstrating work and in assisting in handling the patrons of the office at the Baltimore headquarters and the Washington office.
