Shot in the right temple as he and 2 companions advanced in skirmish formation upon an imaginary enemy while playing at war, Eugene Webb, 13, 1306 Linden avenue, Baltimore City, died at Colonial Hospital. The tragic scene was re-enacted while Eugene lay dying in the hospital, in order that the police might gain a clear understanding of what had taken place. Accompanied by Lieutenant William B. Dorsey, of the Baltimore County Police, James Travis, 3201 Abell avenue, and Elmer Smith, 1403 Linden avenue, both sixteen, led the way, to Gwynns Palls, near Slade avenue, where, the three boys had taken the role of the sharpshooters of an army advancing upon the enemy. Smith took his place in the strategic position he had chosen during the foray—behind the crest of an abandoned quarry—and lay upon the ground, his rifle aimed at the imaginary lines of the hostile forces. Travis assumed his position, behind the stump of a tree, 75 yards from Smith. Webb had been about midway between. The two survivors grief-stricken at the tragic ending of their game and the loss of the member of the trio which had been inseparable, carried on their parts and reconstructed the scene. Travis said he glanced over to where Webb was lying. A curl of smoke was rising as though Webb's rifle had just been discharged. But something was wrong. Webb was writhing as if in pain. They_ reached the side of their friend "and sensed that his contortions were the convulsions of death. They picked him up and carried him to the road in the manner they had learned when they were members of the same Boy Scout troop. An automobile was stopped and in it the three boys were taken to the hospital. Dr. A. A .Sussman operated, but gave his verdict that the bullet—of .22 calibre, had lodged in the brain and that there was little hope. Webb died without regaining consciousness, and couldn't tell just how it had happened. Travis and Smith, after telling their story to Lieutenant Dorsey, were released in the custody of their parents, pending investigation by the police and Coroner. The police are inclined to believe the boy stumbled and was killed by his own rifle. 300 WATCH DRY RAID AT TURNERS STATION.
