TOWSON, MARYLAND Scoffed at Telephone, Now Radio Fan Shortly after his retirement from Congress "Uncle Joe" Cannon was featured in a newspaper syndicate photograph enjoying grand opera ria radio. The veteran legislator appears to have become a complete convent to the wonders of electrical communication, but it is not so many years ago that he was an outspoken skeptic. When told, in 1878, that T. N. Vail had resigned from the Railway Mail Service to become manager of the Bell Telephone Company, Cannon exclaimed, "Well, that's too bad. I always liked Vail. Hubbard tried to sell me some of that stock. I'm sorry he got hold of a nice fellow like Vail." American Telephone and Telegraph stock now sells at about 125. TELEPHONE MEN DEMONSTRATE VALUE OF FIRST AID COURSE A Chagrined Sea Fighter. Outside the harbor of Charlotte Amalie, on the coast of St Thomas island, a huge rock looms out of the sea. Sail Rock it is called, and it bears a startling resemblance to a ship. As I gazed upon it, says Mr. A. Hyatt Verrill in his book "In the Wake of the Buccaneers," I could not blame the bellicose captain of a French frigate who a century and more ago sighted the rock one night and, mistaking it for a privateer, ran close and hailed it No response came back. Again he hailed, and as still no response came he blazed a broadside at the shadowy mass. Back came the echoing thunder of the cannonade, and the rebounding shot, falling on the frigate's deck, convinced the Frenchman that the privateer was returning his fire. For hours the battle raged; the French gunners poured broadside after broadside at the massive cliff. Not until day dawned did the deluded commander of the frigate discover his mistake. Then, crestfallen and mortified, he crept away, leaving Sail Rock unscathed and triumphant.—Youth's Companion. "Another fine instance of First Aid treatment rendered by telephone men was demonstrated recently by a gang of linemen when they administered first aid to a man who was in a serious condition suffering from a broken leg, severe laceration of the scalp and burns about the body. The accident ¦occurred near Pittsburg, Pa.," says the Sykesville, Pa., Post-Dispatch. "While the telephone men were en-1 gaged in setting a pole an explosion occurred about fifty feet away. Upon investigation they found the man lying! helpless on the ground. They proceeded to administer first aid treatment without delay. A compress and iodine were placed on the laceration of the scalp and the bums' were treated immediately. At the same time one of the men secured a box which happened to be lying on the ground nearby and a pair of very effective splints were placed on the fracture. "At the hos-pital, where the injured' man was received, the telephone men were highly commended for their j thoroughness in administering first i aid treatment." I Telephone men of the local Chesapeake and Potomac Company have also demonstrated their proficiency at first aid in a number of contests and exhibition;:. After obtain-, ing the number, the subscriber puts' the call through in the usual way. Most companies make it a rule to confine the work of Information operators to giving information which | has a direct bearing on establishing! telephone connections. They are notj allowed to answer subscribers' questions as to the time of day, the loca-' tion of fires, the outcome of athletic contests, elections, etc., because it might at times result in a serious congestion that would prove detrimental to the regular service and impose aj heavy burden upon the operators. ITALIAN TELEPHONE USER NEEDS PATIENCE OF SAINT Telephones will be the first of the publicly owned utilities in Italy to go back to private enterprise, according; to Signor Giovanni Colonna di Cesaro,. Minister of Posts and Telegraphs under Mussolini. "Our telephones are nearly the worst in the world," he said in a recent interview. "Excepting Russia, no civilized country has so little telephonic development. As to quality our telephones are even worse. Tele-phonnig in Italy ... is a Christian and spiritual exercise in divine patience. More than 8,000 villages are without any telephonic connection. The blame must be laid indirectly on the State." Definite action by the Italian Cabinet has confirmed the proposed transfer of the telephones to private com-! panies, and bida have been requested. All covered wires that carry the voice currents must be kept perfectly dry and care must be taken that no dampness shall reach them, eke the service may be interrupted whfle search is made for the cause of trouble and the necessary repairs are made. The popularity of the telephone in this country is shown by the fact that in 1922, 18,250,000,000 calls were made *n average of 55,000,000 calls per working day.
