THE JEFFERSONIAN, TOWSON, MARYLAND Saturday, May 3, 1924—Page 9 THIRTY CANS OF SARDINES IS FOOD FOR STOWAWAY FOR THIRTY-FIVE DAYS Youngster, Found Hidden In Steamship Lying Off County Water Front Existed On Fish And Bucket Of Water For Over Month. Thirty-five days at sea on 30 cans of sardines. That was the story told customs officials by Menaseo Sabitch, a youthful stowaway on board the Italian steamship Nelda, lying off the Baltimore county water front, from Trieste. > The customs officials were searching the ship for contraband liquor. They found no liquor Instead, they discovered the stowaway. Sabitch told them he lived in Dal-matia, on the shores of the Adriatic. He longed to see his brother in Key-port, Pa. He had no money for passage. He decided to stow away. Thererupon he set about laying in a food supply. This consisted of the 30 cans of sardines. In addition he had a few tins of canned meat and a bucket of water The customs authorities understood how, by eating sparingly, he was able to make the sardines hold j out for the voyage. But they werei unable to understand how he man-! aged to make a single bucket of water last throughout the trip. Sabitch said nothing when the matter was mentioned. Members of the crew winked at one another) knowingly. The customs officials gt it go at that. They were not iduly curious. No possible charge Rf smuggling was involved. Nevertheless the youth, after his 35-day repast of sardines among the magnesite and general cargo carried by the ship, was sent to jail to await deportation when the ship sails on the return voyage to Italy Meanwhile he will not have to eat sardines. He will have soup, coffee, beans and bread—choice tidbits of prison fare. COW'S APPETITE FOR IRON KILLS ANIMAL. < ? < ? «? ;: ¦4 ? -I . ¦4 > ¦4 > ¦4 > « ? « ? < ? 4 ? < ? « ? < ? 4 ? < ? < ? « ? The veterinarian said nothing could be done, and the cow would die. She did die shortly thereafter and the diagnosis was verified by the finding in her stomach of several tacks, a number of shingle nails, a piece of wire, a six-penny nail and a fence staple. ----------o---------- DECISION IS WITHHELD IN CASE.
