Page 12—Saturday, May 10, 1924. THE JEFFERSONIAN, TOWSON, MARYLAND i state roads commission ivot Giving public square deal. John N. Mackall, Omar D. Crothers And D. C. Wiiiebrenner—Upon You Rests Responsibility For Killed And Injured Pedestrians On State Highways During- 1924. (Continued from Page 1) the total to 1040 fatalities in the past 4 months; an average of one death every other day occurring so far this year. In 1920 one hundred and fifty-one were killed by automobiles; in 1921 there were one hundred and eighty-nine; in 1922 two hundred and twelve, and in 1923 two hundred and twenty-one. Five automobile accidents in three hours one night this week is the record on the York road between Towson and Cockeysville, where the State Road Commission has seen fit to place its 35-mile speed limit signs. One evening this week was spent by a representative of The Jeffer-sonian on all the prominent State roads running through Baltimore county, and found conditions to be deplorable. With men, women and children walking on the roads, motorists heeded the "invitation" to speed, going the limit and then some, pedestrians being compelled in some instances to jump for their lives. Criticisms from every nook and corner are continuing to pour into the office of The Jeffersonian, but the 35-mile speed limit signs will stand until some prominent persons are killed or badly injured—then ©" rO USED J^sa CARS m UNIVERSAL CAST- '21 ROADSTKK, Starter and Dem., good- tires............$12.1.00 '19 DELIVERY, Panel body, good motor................. $65.00 '23 FORDOR SEDAN, cord tires..........................$475.00 '22 TOURING, Starter, Demovmtables, good.............$200.00 '21 COUPE, good condition................................$275.00 M0 TON TRUCK, platform body, solid tires,.............$100.00 '18 TOURING, plain clincher..............................$125.00 '16 RUNABOUT, plain clincher...........................$ 50.00 --------o-------- AUTO CAR TRUCK, open body and cab.................$400.00 '23 STAR COUPE, new paint, cord tires..................$300.00 Phone, write or stop in for demonstration HENRY RECKORD 3 West Chesapeake Avenue Telephone, Towson 33 TOWSON, MD. ©^ .o perhaps the State Road Commission will see its error and rip them down. Roads, as the State Road Com mission builds them, are not practi cal for automobiles and motor trucks to speed along at 35 miles an honi4 where pedestrians are compelled to use them, for the* width is barely enough to allow two machines to pass, and at some points there is bound to be congestion. Eight hundred and sixty persons were killed the first quarter of this year by automobiles, and investigation discloses the fact that most fa talities were due to speeding—y make. Remember, You Can Only Get The Most Reliable Shoes Here. We Carry No Inferior Makes deal from the State Road Commission and they know it. The Jeffersonian well realizes that motorists have some rights, and so do those who are compelled to "hoof it." This paper has 'sounded" the community on the erection of the 35-mile speed limit siggns and has found the people "up in arms"—-yes, bitter against the State Road Commission for creating speedways out of highways that children must use going to and fro from school, and grown-ups use who are not fortunate enough to own an automobile. If the State Road Commission is determined to utterly ignore all Legislation passed to curb and pinch reckless drivers and to make the highways safe for the traveling public, then we might just as well do away with our police department and all the agencies created to enforce the law. John N. Mackall, Omar D. Crothers and D. C. Winebrenner—upon you rests responsibility for killed and injured pedestrians on State highways during 1924.
