And be it enacted and ordained, That the said city commissioners are hereby authorised and directed, with the approba- tion of the mayor, to draw on the register of the city for the tax for paving, amending or repairing the footways, when the same •riny be collected, and for the further sum required for procuring the kerb-stonqs, and to discharge the duties required by this or- dinance. XVIII. And be it enacted and srdained, That whenever the city commissioners shall be applied to for the extension of any of the foot-pavetnents in any of the streets, lanes or alleys within the city, and it shall appear to them that the same cannot be done without lowering said street in the centre or K'iy part thereof, that the said commission- ers be, and they are hereby empowered and directed to take up said stone pavement and reduce said street as much as may appear necessary, so as not to injure the adjoining property on said streets, and to repave the sanie : Provided nevertheless, That the own- ers of property shall be liable for their pro- portionate part opposite to their property. XIX. And. be "it enacted and ordained, That the city commissioners are hereby em- powered and directed to contract with one or more skilful surveyors, for the purpose of making a correct general survey of the city of Baltimore under their direction, and to establish tho boundaries of squares, atari the limits of the-city, and to fix marks and devices thereon ; and they shall cause a correct plat or plats with proper explanati- ons of the same to be made, together with any proof by them taken, to be reduced into -writing ; and the commissioners aforesaid are hereby directed to cause to be made fair duplicates of the said plats, the certificates of the said survey of the city, containing the location thereof ; and such other locati- ons and illustrations as they may think ne- cessary ; and they shall sign their names to each plat and certificate, and return one to the register of the city, to be by him kept, as the true location of said city, and the other to be lodged in the office of the-city commissioners for their use, and if any per- •son shall apprehend himself aggrieved by the determination, of said commissioners in the premises, such person may repeal in like manner as is provided in the sixth section of this ordinance ; and the city commission- ers are hereby authorised and empowered to draw on the register of the city for a sum not exceeding six hundred dollars, to ena. ble them to carry the provisions of this sec- tion into effect. XX. And be it enacted and ordained. That rthe ci'y commissioners shall be authorised and empowered in conjunction, and with the approbation of the mayor, to employ on the best terms they can procure, as many captains, officers and watchmen, or ¦repute, as they may from time to time find necessary, so as not to exceed, with the purchase of oil and other expences, incident to lighting and watching the city, the annu- al appropriation alloted for that service ; and the said commissioners, with the appro- bation of the mayor, shall prescribe such rules, regulations, and tours of duty for the said watch, from time to time, as may ap- pear to them best calculated to ensure the Safety of the city, not inconsistent with law ; shall superintend their conduct and see that they attend with punctuality the duty assign- ed them respectively, receive their reports, and cause them to be returned to the may- or's office. (A> AN ORDINANCE To restnin gaming, and for licensing and regulating theatrical and other public ex- hibitions within the city and precincts of IJaltioiore. I. BE it enacted and ordained by the Mi wr and City Council of Baltimore, That if any person or persons do or shall, within the city of Baltimore or precincts thereof, by any fraud, cozenage, deceit, unlawful device or evil practice whatsoever, in playing at or with cards, dice or any other game or games, or shall, knowing of such fiaud, bear a share or part in the wager, stake or adventure so played for, or shall, with the like knowledge, bet on the side or hand of such as do cf shall so play for, win, obtain or acquire to him or themselves, or others, any sum or sums of money, or other valua- ble thing, every such person being thereof convicted, shall forfeit and pay twenty dol- lars. II. And be it enacted and ordained, That any person or persons shall at any time, in any ordinary or licensed house of enter- tainment within the city or precincts afore- said, or in any house attached thereto, or upon the lot or premises whereon such li- censed house is or may be situate or erected, «Cp-j,n or loose five dollars or upwards, or the valm? thereof at cards, dice or any other game, wry such person or persons on con- viction thereof, shall forfeit and pay ten dollars : And if any ordinary keeper shall suffer or p.r.rit any person or persons to lose live dollars Qt upwards, or the value thereof, at any titrie in his house, at any game organii-s whatsoever.,,jind knowing the sari rfeit and pay for every such offence, the sum of ten dollars. 1 HI. The British Frigate Orpheus of 33 gun s captain Briggs, was lost oil the 23d of Jan., on a reef about 5 miles E. S. E. of Port- Royal, (Jam.) the crew saved. The following Baltimore ships were left at Lisbon on the 27th January : Harriet, Harlow, Baltimore ; Staplet-on, Blacfcwell, of Philadelphia, for do..; & Iris, Conway, of Baltimore. A Jamaica paper of the 14th u'lt. says, "we learn that a reinforcement of 300 men, con- sisting of seamen and marines, will proceed immediately from Kingston for Curracoa i and that capt. Brisbane, of the Arethusa, goes there as governor." The same paper states, that his honor the lieutentnt governor has received, by the packet, informallion that his royal-highness the duke of Sussex, may soon be expected in this island in the capacity of governor. The editor of the New-York Mercantile Advertiser has received a letter from Mr. J. King, at Jacmel, on the subject of Miran- da's companions. The communication came to hand too late for to-day's Gazette.. The following is one of the enclosures -: " Sir—We have endeavored to give you as correcta statement of our despicable situa- tion as it is possible, allowing that we are not all in one prison together.
