Tkirn a late Lands:t. Pape*¦¦:. ,
lM AT FREEMASONS' HALL
¦On Tuesday the."i4th inst n very nume-
rous and highly respectable meeting of no-
blemen and gentlemen was Field attliis place,
for the purpose of concerting means for im-
proving the opportunity presented by tile ar
bolition of the slave trade, for promoting
innocent commerce and civilization in Af-
rica. The very late hour to which the der
bate in .the house of Lords, of the preced-
ing evening had been protracted, and an e-
lection at the Charter House, deprived the
meeting of several noblemen, who would
otherwise have been present. Yet.we dis-
tinguished in the room, besides his royal
highness the duke of Gloucester, who pre-
sided, the following noblemen and gentle-
men .
Earl Euston, Eafl Spencer, bishop of
London, bishop of Durham, bishop of Bath,
and Wells, bishop of Saint Daviq's; lord.
Valentia, lord Teignmouth, lord Headly ;
the chancellor of the exchequer; right honora-
ble J. C. Villiers ; sir John Newport, M.
P. ; sir V. Gibbs, M. P.; sir P. Francis,
K. B. ; lieut. gen. Vyse, M. P ; col. Barry ;
Dean of Carlisle ; revd. Dr Jo.vett, revd.
Dr. Macleod ; Samuel Whitebread, esq'
M. P. ; Thomas Bernard esq.,; H. Banks,
esq. M. P. ; Grenville Sharp, e>>q. William
Sharp esq. Wm. Smith esq. Charles Grant
esq. M. P. William Wilberfosce, esq. M. P.
Rober Thornton. Esq. M. P Henry Thorn-
ton, esq. M P Thomas Babbington, esq.
M. P. William Roscoe, esq. M P ; Thomas
Clarkson, esq. John Thornton esq, ; Ste-
phen Lushington esq. M P. Pascoe Grenfell,
esq. M P'; Robert Barclay, esq. ; C. W:
Wynn, esq. M P. W. M. Pitt, esq. M P.
John Simeon, esqr. M P, I: H. Browne.
esq: M P, John Maitland, esq: M P. John
Hud'llcston, esq. C. Grant, esq. jun ; J.
Wharton, esq. MP; J; Campbell, esq
W: H. Hoare, esq.
His royal highness opened the business of
the meeting in an elegant and appropriate
speech ; wherein, after congratulating ihe
meeting on that glorious and h^ppy event
the abolition of the s^ave trade, r.id advert-
ing in terms of wa.m eulogy to the merits
of Mr. Wtlbaaforce, be pointed out the
advantageous opportunity which that event
would soon oiler for the introduction of com-
merce of a benificial kind ; cf agriculture
and the other arts of social life, inty that
immense and hitherto unfortunate continent.
He considered the attempt so to repair the
injuries which Airica had sustained by its
intercourse with Europe, as a natural and
necessary prosecution of the sime just and
humane principles which had led to the a-
bolition of the slave trade, and as an effort
worthey the sxertions of a great and gene-
rous people. He also adverted to the ad-
vantages which would be likely to arise .to
the commerce and manufactures of this
country, from such liberal endeavors, if suc-
cessful.
His royal highness having received from
Mr. Wilberfqre a series of resolutions, ex-
plaining the objects pf the meeting, and
establishing a society for the purpose of
Carrying those objects into effect, conclud-
ed, by submitting those resolutions to the
consideration of the noblemen and gentle-
men present.
Earl Spencer, in a neat and concise speech,
signified his cordial concurrence in the reso-
lutions which had been proposed, and in the
general objects of the meeting. His lordship
expressed his great satisfaction at seeing so
large and highly respectable an assembly
convened for so noble a purpose, and was
peculiarly glad to hear of that opportunity
of professing publicly his approbation cf t.lieir
beneficent design, and his joy at the-abolition
of the slave trade, as he had been prevented
by. a long and severe indisposition from con
tributing his aid in parliament tc the success
of the bill which had lately passed i.no a
law ; a measure of which his lordship spoke
in glowing terms, as honorable in the high-
est degree to the national character.
Mr. Wilherforce very briefly explained the
general objects of the proposed institution,
on the value and importance of which it was
needless for him to expatiate, as they were
sufficiently understood and felt by every gen-
tleman who heard him. The detail of prac-
tical measures which it might be proper to
pursue, in order to excite and assist the spi-
rit of commercial, agricultural and other im
provements in different parts of Africa, must
obviously be litter to be discussed and settled
in a committee, which one of the resolutions
went to constitute, than at so large a gene-
ral meeting; but he trusted it would be found
very practicable to give, by making or en
couraging attempts, at improvement, on a
small scale, upon different parts of the coast,
examples of successful industry and moral
and intellectual improvement, which might
soon be widely imitated and extended, to
the unspeakable future happiness ot Africa,
and the great benefit of our own manufac-
turing and commercial interests. When, by
the private endeavors of the society, con-
ducted as they ought to be, with the utmost
caution and prudence, some happy begin-
nings were effected, it might be reasonaUy
hoped, that assistance would be given by go-
vernment and the parliament, towards ex-
tending, upon a larger scale, the same bene-
ficent system.
The Resolutions, were then put, and una-
nimously carried ; after which, the several
Resolutions of thanks to Messrs. Wilbetforce,
Granvillle Sharpe, and Clarkson, were moved
by different gentlemen, and also unanimous-
ly agreed to, with great and general applause.
On the last Resolution, for thanking the
Duke of Gloucester, which was moved by
Mr. Wilberforce, loud and long continued ap-
plause manifested the strong sense which.the
company entertained of His Royal High-
ness's zealous support of the cause of Africa,
in Parliament, and of the honor he did the
Institution, in consenting to accept the office
of Patron. His Royal Highness, in a feel-
ing and graceful manner, expressed his
sense of the honour done to him by the ap-
probation of so respectable an assembly ; and
declared, that it should he bis' ftonstact en-
deavour to,promote, to the'utmost of his
power, the noble ai)d inratejf jn'g ci'jf ct; of
