July 6._______________ To the Members of the Library Company of Baltimore. gentlemen', It is now eleven years since the ceratnence- ment of the Library Company of Baltimore ; in tifs thort period of time, a taste for useful reading, and polite literature, has evidently arfead among the young of both sexes A progression so pleasing in its nature, and be- n lici. 1 iu its effects, which the institution has certainly accelerated, cannot fail of secur- ing to it, a continuance, of protection and pa- tionage. A Library, formed with a due respect to Religion, and morals, which dees nut exclude works of genius, and amusement, which contains the must esteemed writings of everv country, and the best boelts on the'different arts, and in every branch of science snd lite- rature to whose ample stores, all persons may have access ht a tr,fling expence, must rank amongst the most useful, and laudable institutions in society To select a Library, in conformity with these principles, calls for the Union of diffe- rent taients, aad.vr.rious information. It must howevei be recollected, that although with a limited annual sum, all valuable bo"l;s cannot tit once, be introduced, yet, that in time and successively, all of the greatest value., or im- portance, which can be procured, may find admission. With such prospects, the Library company of Baltimore, was instituted, and under the influence of corresponding principles, i' has been uniformly and steadily conducted down to the present hour. Believing it to be th« wish of the members, to continue to society the advantages of tin institution, will it not b« considered indispensable i 1. That the directors should not be obliged to apply any part of tlie mo nes now ainua.ly expended in the purchase of Books to any other object? 2. That the means be provided competent to procure a lot of ground, in a suitable situ- ation on which may be erected, when it shall become necessary, a commodious building, for 1*ie deposit of the Books of the Compani I With respect to tlie first, Tile Directors would lament the occurrence of any circum- stance, that should abridge the annual supply of Books, or the increase of the Library, up- on this point, they fell atsured they concur in opinion with the great body of Stockhol- ders. ¦ . With rtspeetfothe second point, they also %'5-oj-: *to#j6jy<$ wj$ a c^a-ence,. for, althoogh fixed in their determination tcrc{=it the room now possessed hy the company*, o» long(if permitted by it* proprietors) as it wi8 serve to contain their ho<;!;s, yet, as the lima must come when it will b inadequate, to that purpose, the directors consider it prudent and advisable, th.t the company should be pro-, id- ed against such an event. A;L"f of Ground in a suitable situation, in ay he now had on reasonable terms. Should «.he purchase r.e deferred, who will insure U» the company, that we shall he able to get a suitable lot hereafter J "f he probability ig if We neglect to buy now, that we either cannot be accommodated at market when we cannot longer do wifhout a hit, or must pay, to* a convenient situation, an extravagant p'ice. Acting under these Considerations, the di<- rectors recently proposed tu the company an additional eontiinution at tivo dulhus jwi e nam, to he paid on each sha're, for H sticeeasri ; years. This proposed contribution, so and equal in its operatien, wh-Cft t^ me«iher would h ve amounted to : dollars only, was unr.nimuii.«!y a ¦ at a meeting of the company, conveni , S6lh May last, but at a substiq; el t (the concurrence of two being :vq die.! tor its confirmation) from some memo "is misconceiv. ing jtha otject of the measure, Sl .he necessity of making the purchase, *it tins Iim,, n„t being felt, or but slightly fe.i hj- others, it wis re- jected byu majority of the >ew who aitt.nrlei on that occasion. The necessity of adopting the measure, still pressing upon the directors with undiminished force, they conceive it to he their duty, to call the attention of the company again to th, Sub- ject, ni".re especially as they cannot petmitj theniscivost to entertain a doubt that areyi'siqji by men, IrieT d'y to the ^icb'i'.sion oi the artsiand. literature among us, Will lead to a favorable result. T'ee following proceedings were aC« Ha lj At a meet ngof thehbody, held tiie 1st July instant: Eeidlvat, That a general meeting of' tlia members of the Library C .rnpany be, and hereby is requested, at the Library room, on the irtii of July inst. at 11 o'clock, a. m in order to determine on the following; propositi- o:.s, wb-'ch, if then agreed to am! confirmed bjr the company at a future meeting, will be- come of constitutional force : 1.
