At the time that the French army evacuated St. Domingo, the under Prefect of Port-au- Prince, saved a barrel containing divers Pa- pers ; he went from P-rt-au Prince to St Ja- go-de-Cnba, and from thence to Charleston, wliere it appears that the barrel was confound- ed amongst some barrels of potatoes ; from Charleston he went to New Yo 'k, where he embarked for France, without perreiviig the mistake. When he arrived at Nantz, and had the barrels opened, they were found full of potatoes, instead of papers. On examining the said barrel, he per ejvod that it was di- rected to Baltimore, it is possible and very !e, that some one in Baltimore has re- ceived the barrel of papers, instead of po- ! tatocs. In this case he entreats them to send it immediately to the consul's office at Balti- more. At all events those who have receiv- : cd this barrel of papers are requested to Bend it to the French consul nearest to their res deuce, or to give information of it to jo- i seph Fr'e'ct, Second-street, Baltimore ; who : offers to pay the expences, that this mistake j mav h»vi occasioned, it required. August 17- Apply at eo-itj PROPOSALS, By EZRA SARGEANT, No. 39, Wall street, New-Yo-'k, For publishing by subscription, A NEW CYCLOPEDIA, OR, Dictionary qf Arts & Sciences. BY G. GREGORY, D. D. Author of Essays Historical and Moral, the Economy of Nature, tjjc- fjfe. To be completed in twelve months from the time it is put to press. In Twelve Parts. Price two dollars and seventy-five cents each. The literary Quackery wMch prompts the publisher of every new work to endeavor to magnify the merits of his own intended pub lication by depreciating the merit of all other similar productions, is, at once, both useless and despicable ; because nothing human can rise into esteem and honor, merely, upon the ruins of another's reputation, without some intrinsic excellence of its own. The Publish- er of Gregory's Cyclopedia, therefore, will leave it to others to discover and declare, that the generality of Books called Encyclopedias are, in their very constitution and form, too pxpenjive and two cumb rsome, to be either extensively circulated, or generally useful ; and will content himself with briefly stating the claims and pretensions of the Boo* which he hereby proposes to offer to the public First., It comprises the most valuable informa- tion in all the important departments of Know- ledge, collected and arranged bv some of the best scholars, and the.most comprehensively scientific men, this day existing in Britain Secondly. This information is comprised in a small compass, and come; e/i in language at once perspicuous and elcga"t ; so that (he reader may, in a short space of time, with ease and pleasure to himself, obtain that real acquaintance with the moral, literary, politi- ' cai, and philosopuical woild, which other wise could not lie acquired from the larger works in which the sources of these streams of knowledge are contained, but by a whole lii'e dev ; I to i re and unremitted labour. In order to render the work worthy of the patronage of the American public, the Pub- Usher has engaged all the best American Artists to engrave the Copper-Plates, of which 138 will be given in the course of the work ; and has also secured the astisUn c of Edi- tors of acknowledged talents and information. It is with the Hh ded emotions or" confi- dence and delight, that trie Publisher an- nounces his' intention of offering to his nu. ' meTOUS patrons and supporter's, a work wtoich combines eloquence with-economy, and ! practicable utility with splendor. That the Patrons and Subscribers of this ; intended Publication, m-iy Is thoroughly as. ¦ sured of not having- their patronage and pro- I tection abused by any delect in the execution of the work itself, or any want of punctuality j in its appearance, at the stated andVppointcd ; times, :.bo page given as a-specimen of the I style in which the publisher solemnly pie. !^es himself the whole shall be executed^ may be seen at the office of the Federal Gazette On account of the great abundance of mat- ter and the number of Engravings which the work will contain, and in consequence of toe vast expence necessarily attending the prose- oution of such a plan, the publisher is com. pelled to solicit the aid of a sufficient number of subscribers, to enable him to carry his pur- pose into full effect, before he puts any part ot the intended Publication into the hands of the Engraver or the Printpr. The acknowledged and intrinsic merits of the work are such as to ensure it a very ge- neral and extensive circulation : wherefore it only remains to the Publisher to ensure to his subscribers that the whole of the exe- cution, as to the accuracy and elegance of the engravings, paper, and type, shall be such, as in every respect to correspond with the high value of the work. As to the engrav- ings, as yet no spocimen can be given; but the Publisher pledges himself that they shall be at least equal, and many superior to those in the London edition. That there may be no possibility of dis- appointment to the patrons of literature as to this work, the subscriptions are proposed to be received on the following CONDITIONS : 1st. The whole shall be comprisedin Twelve parts, one of which shall be published month- ly. Each part shall contain about 150 quarto pages, neatly done up in colored paper, at tba price of Tivo Dollars and Seventy five Cents, \yhich is to be paid for on the delivery of each part—the whole twelve parts when Completed will mak'-, two volumes'in quarto, containing 213 Copper-Plate Engravings, winch alone are worth th# price of the whole work. It will contain more than double the matter of any similar work that has ever been published in tab country. 2diy 'mo Dollar shall be paid at the time of subscribing, and to be deducted on the delivery ot the twelfth part. 3diy. I! the work be not executed in every respect equal to the engagement hereby made the subscribers shall, on returning the vo- lumes, receive back the amount of their sob. scrip;ion money which has been advanced. If required, the publisher will give a Certi- ficate, pledging himself to that eftfte, to each subscriber, at the time of subscribing. 4thly. The price ot each part will e rais- ed,, to Three Dollars, the moment that the work is put to press ; and even then, the •whole expense of a work wiiic'i contains the substance of all that is known on every sub- ject, literary and scientific, will be only 36 Dollars.
