You said that they were to go to the Oua-
chita and to New-Orleans: were they to go
in any event ? A. They were to yo to the
Ouachita ; but the articles did not specify
¦what business they were to follow. The
only service which was mentioned, was,
that they were to work the boats do*n.
Mr. Baker objected to this kind of evidence.
He contended that the best sort of evidence
ought in every case to be produced ; and
that no paper ou:>ht to be mentioned, which
was not exhibited in court. The objection
was oveiruled, when Mr. Hay asked the
witness « hcther he was certain they were

Mr. IL,y. W II j uu describe the situation
Of the party at the muth of Cumberland
river '. VV itne^s. Am I to be confined to
the Cumberland river' Mr. 1/ iy. You may
go down to rhe Ch;ckasaw Fluffs Mr. Bctls.
Go down to ihe Mississippi riveri and who
ther you aie to l1; mi tbi r the court will in-
struct you. Some desultory conversation
here ensued on this point, after which the
•witness proceeded.
On the 2f5'.li December, 1806, very early
in the mnrninrr a small skiff with four men
and a Mr. Hopkins, arrived at Fort Massac.
Some time after the arrival of this sk'ff,
captain Bissell: commander at the fort, de-
tained me for command, to go to the mouth
of Cumberland river, to purchase a beef for
liim. (1. What were yo.. ? A f Was a id
am s*ill Serjeant in rhe army of the United
States. He told me I was to call on colonel
Burr with his compliments ; and if colonel
Bun* wanted my assistance, that I was to
furnish it. Captaii Bissell told me this Mr.
Hopkins, who came in the sit iff with 4 men.
was going up wjtb_me When we got half
way ' p to the Cumberland, we stopt, and I
asked Mr. Hopkins his business at Port Mas-
sac : and he said if was to ask cjptafll Bissell
whether lie would oppose colonel Burr's
passing by the fort. I got to the mouth of
Cumberland about half an hour bafore sun-
set, on the 26th December, and landed : col.
B. was then encamped on Cumberland Island.
After 1 had Crossed over to the island. I saw
colonel Burr, and delivered captain Bissell's
in ssage. Colonel Burr said be was much
Obliged to him ; and that captain Bissell was
very good. G lonel B asked me, ' Ii not
this in? old friend '" i*had seen him before.
He said he believed I drn.-k no brandy- and
asked me if I would not have a glass of
wine. When I drank, I said here's success
to colonel Burr and his undertaking ;" and
ft1--. Blannerhasseft (this was the first tiint
ever saw him) stamped his foot and said
" \men." Colonel Burr told me I must
take breakfast with him next morning; I
repli' -; that I would. On the 27th I saw
coionel Burr, and told him I was going to
the garrison. He to] I me to bear his com-
pliments to ciptaiu Hrs* 11. and asked me if
J could take a barrel of apples to him. I
told him I would. Whilst they Vftti getting
the apples on board, the wind sprung up
very fresh, and I was n- t able to start. In
the course of that day. I crossed him several
times over to the IC-. tucky shore, and sever-
al of his men. During the day, col. Burr
asked me how I would like to go down the
river with him. I replied, very well if T
could obtain the consent of my general. He
said that that would make no odds. He
would fix itwbhWlt. This was on the 27th,
and on the 28th I called on colon .1 B. atid
told him I was gointr to Fort Massac. He
seni his c inplimeilts to captain Bissell, but
Sid he expected he would get there before
me. I told him that he might, man his barge
as well as he could I would arrive there be-
fore him. I arrived at the garrisori some-
time in the afternoon.
Mr. Botts. There you may st p. It is
imnossible to progress without running into
some impropriety, unless we ascertain the
limits within which the witnesses are to be
confined Mr. Hay observed that he did
not mean to prove any acts at fort Massac.
After some conversation the examinati n
proceeded : Mr. Hny. Did you see any mi-
litary parade r A. I saw the men drawn up
at the mouth of Cumberland. Q. How ma-
ny men ? A. I did not count them ; hut I
suppose there were abont ioo. Q^ What
kind of men ? a Generilly young men.—
Mr. Wirt. Did they look like hard labour-
ers ? A. The principal part did not. Q. How
drawn up ? were they drawn up in a line ?
a. No : they were drawn up in three wings
Q^ What do you mean by three wings ?
divisions ? The "witness here described their
position, by drawing a figure on the floor
with his foot. They described three sides
of a square Col. Burr was introduced by
col. Tyler, beginning at the left. The
party gradually Jell in and formed a circle.
Mr. Hay. How introduced ? a He went
around and shook hands with every man.
Mr. Hry Did you not see some chests of
arms ? Mr. Burr objected to this manner of
putting the question. Mr. Hay admitted that
he had put the question inadvertently ; he
merely wished Mr. Dunbaugh to state what
he kn.ws of the chests of arms. Mr. Botts.
State what yon know of any chests of arms
within the nited States, witness. I did not
see more than a few rifles at the mouth of
Cumberland. Mr. Hay. I think the court
yesterday decided, that we were a. liberty
to state any circumstances out of the United
States which were explanatory of the acts
done within the U. S.

Extract of a letter from an officer at fart
Michil'mackinac, re his brother in Hallow.
el dated 'July 24.
'' We are now much on the alert, ex-
pecting an attack from the United tribes of
Indians north of the Ohio and ea^t of the
Mississippi. A great prophet, (impostor
somewhat similar in his conduct hitherto to
Mahome') who pretends he is revived from
the dead by the breath of Manit. n (Great
Spirit) to reform and unite his red children
(the indian •) and to restore them to their an-
cient energy, cu-toms and independence.
It is true that the Ind ans who hold any in-
tercourse with the .-lilies, readily imbibe all
tile vices of society, ,i ithaut one of the vir-
tues and sink into the moat degrading de-
bauchery and indolence their ancient energy
and innocence. It their reformation was
'he real object of the new prophet's zeal, it
would nd ed be laudable. But if 1 o ,ly
had time to incl seyou a c py of a talk in
circulation in their councils of chiefs (very
artfully obtained from an Indian woman
who is attached to a trader in our interest)
you would know th.^t war, energetic war on
our frontiers, is the sole object.—T:ie poor
deluded natives are neglecting their hunting,
fishing and planting, and thronging to the
scene of inspired legislati n with an enthu-
siasm that is truly ast nishmg. But the
Uniied States are n t abne in possession of
demagogues under foreign influence or pay.
There are Lidinn demagogues in Spanish,
tha is to say, Bonaparte's pay ; and a few
of them paid their homage to him at St.
Cloud last summ.r.
A Mr Nolen, a res pre a hie trader at the
Fills of St. Mary (th§k>utiet of lake Superi-
or) has assured us, that he accidenlly saw
in the possession of an Indian Chief and
Missionary, who got intoxicated at his
house, a reJ war club and black wampum
bell (never failing forerunners of a war) care-
fully wrapped in a French ffig, and pre-
cisely similar to those circulated immedi-
ately previous to the attacks of the celebrat-
ed Pontiac, (see Carver's Travels.) I
hope that it will all blow over ; but let-
ters and information has poured in sufficient
to convince usthat something serious is brew-
ing." [_Boston paper.J
