STRALSUND, Aug. 4.
The garrison has been reinforced bj a
detachment of troops from Finland,
POMERANIA, Aug. 13.
The preparations for the siege of Stral-
sund, are in great maturity. The operati-
on* against this place have been much pro-
moted by the result of a general enjjage-
ment, which took place on the 6th before
the fortress- The Swedes were obliged to
abandon all their advanced po^ts. They
lost 4 or 500 men. The loss of the French
was infinately less- The Sweedes keep up
a vigorous fire. The French troops promise
to be masters of Stralsund in 3 weeks.—
The king of Sweden has again proposed
an accommodation ; but his propositions
v/erc rejected. The garrison of Stralsund
is estimated at 8000. The English troops

COMMUNICATION.
Mr. Heives,
There is a malignity in the piece you pub-
lished yesterday over the signature of Anon,
which for the honor of the late grand in-
quest, I will venture to assert, is foreign to
their hearts.
A man of no great penetration -would
have discovered that the paragraph inserted
as an introduction to the statement intend-
ed to be made to the court, respecting the
prison, was made by the editor of tile
« American," who might reasonably be ex-
pected to have mistaken his author, by a
person so well acquainted with the origin
of it, and a Latin scholar, like Anon, might
have expected, at least, from the introduc-
tion of the word subscribers, into every para-
graph of the statement, that it was not in-
tended to be the act of the inquest, as a bo-
dy, its acts being generally subscribed by
the foreman alone.
The person who drew up the st-tement,
disdains to point out the o'er ste:is of truth,
uttered by this mor..l critic ; they arc he be-
lieves, of little importance to the public, but
lie regrets most sincerely, that the members
of the inquest did not visit the alms-house,
as other inquests have done before them ;
some of them would have found that stow-
ing two hundred objects of charity in eight
or ten rooms, without any distinction, ex-
cept as to sex, was another evil, not insa-
fier.ible from the nature of such institutions
or otherwise out of the reach of the court to
remedy.
