friends of the constitution, to represent the
city of Philadelphia in the state legislature,
and in the city councils, have been elected,
as well as their candidate for the office of

We re-publish the following statement
from the " more impartial" ! ! American, with
the greatest cheerfulness, and unsolicited :
considering it a duty and a pleasure to aid
the (ginse of truth at. all times. Why colonel
Lowry should entertain an opinion that we
•were hostile to the " 27th regiment" is> we
apprehend, altogether inexplicable;
I'rom the American.
To THE EDtl'O'R,
Sir, avery nnjuslifiable attack having been
made en an officer (not nfii-ved,) is also a magistrate) presided ;
and alter a minute investigation, was ho-
norably.acquitted of all knowledge or design
with respect to the balls in the cartiidges.
FOR THE FEDERAL GAZETTE,
Mr. Hemes,
As the bject of Anon, in submitting to
the public his remarks upon the ''Commu-
nication" in your paper of the 12th instant,
originated solely in a desire to correct what
he conceived to be a gross misstatement of
facts.jaud as that object is attained by the
disavowal of the paragraph in question by
the author ot the mem 'rial, he feels no in-
clination either to increase that spirit of
acrimony which seems to have diet -ted the
reply of last evening, or to disturb the re-
puted inventor of the paragraph in the honors
with which he has heen invested. The piece
which gave rise to the strictures of Alton ap-
peared in your paper as an original communi-
cation ; & as he had not seen the American
of that day, he must have possessed more
penetration than gentlemen seem willing to
allow him, could he have even suspected so
improbable a thing, as that the editor of the
American would write original paragraphs
for the Federal Gizette. Anon, 'tis true,
is occasionally guilty of the crying sin of
retailing little scraps of Latin ; but no one
ever yet suspected him of claiming any pre-
tensions to be considered a iui%za.rd. The
writer of the Communication is invited to
point out those o'ersteps of truth (as he calls
th*emj which he cha17.es Anon with having
uttered. Conscious of having made no wil-
ful misrepresentations, he will gladly meet
ti'e inquiry, and w;ll not be ashamed, if
Convicted oi unintentional mistake, to make
the amende honorable—A generous mind
will ever be more ready to acknowledge its
own errors, than to detect or expose the er-
rors of -titers. , ' ANON.

IMPORTANT—IF TRUE.
Captain Campbell who arrived here on
yesterday from Passamaquoddy, (Schoodick)
informs us, that before ha 6ailed, he learnt
trom a gentlemen of respectability of Schoo-
dii k, that the British express cutter, the Syl-
via, of 10 guns, which carried out admiral
Berkeley's dispatches, had u turned to Hali-
fax in the short passage of 20 days, bring-
ing the interesting intelligence, that all the
points in dispute between the United States
and Great-Britain had been amicably set-
tled ; and that a cessation of hostilities bad
taken place between England and France.
Captain Campbell sailed fr in Schoodick
on Sunday last. The news arrived there
from Halifax on the Friday preceding, in
Halifax papers. It was common talk on
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and occasion
of much j »y. The particulars were related
to captain C. by Mr. William Pike, captain
ShubaelDownes, squires Porter, Fink and
Brewer, Mr. Andrews, and many others.
The shortness of the passage was comment-
ted on. Such are the reported paiticulars.
Friday being the 2d, allowing the news to
have been 6 days from Halifax to Schoodick,
only 1 day in Halifax, and the 20 days pass.
age, it could have left England no later
than the 5th September—only two days la-
ter than the Portland arrival trom Liver-
pool. It is highly probable there is a chap-
ter of mistake s rnewhere ; and that either
the armistice between Russia and France,
or the discontinuance of the embargo in
Engla'vd, or some other old event, has been
mistaken tor news. The . leport. we are
confident, as stated by capt. C. was current
at Schoodick ; but the news is too bulky,
and the channel to touud.-.bout, for'entire
credenxe.
