And the question was put, That the' house assent to the same ? Determined in the negative, yeas —, nays 39. The following message was read. We have received your dissent to the re- solution originated in this house in favor of John Trueman, a veteran of 177(3. We should urge to you as an inducement to re- consider the same, the claims which he has upon the justice and liberality of the state, if your message did not recognise them.' The house of delegates entertain a high sense of the propriety and policy of acting with a liberality and just ce becoming a wealthy and dignified state, towards those who have spent the prime of th'-ir lives in the service of their country ; and whenever? anv individual, or th- represonatives of such, shall .ipproach this house, with a claim sanctioned by justice and gratitude, they will meet with a prompt attention, and a disposition to extend to them a re- muneration equal, if not superior to their ju^t demands. But, notwithstanding this disposition to act with munificence, we can- not consent to gratify it, by the adoption of a mode which we consider totally incon- sistent with the independence essential to correct legislation. We entertain a high respect for the se- nate of Maryland, as a co-ordinate branch of the government, and when we say, that the alternative offered by your message, if adopted, may establish a precedent which we consider will lie beneath the digiity of the legislative body of Maryland, we beg to be understood as not depreciating from this respect. The sum of twenty ive dollars at not an object of state concern, but to True- man it may be an object of great import- ance. We flatter ourselves, that when you see the solicitude u hich this house manifests in favor of John Trueman, you will, upon re- c-msideration, gratify the resolution, and re- ward a meritorious officer.
