284 This is the first museum commenced in the t States with an appropriate building, and bids fair to rank amongst the most distinguished institutions of the kind. It is peculiarly characterised by its saJooij of paintings, in which the artist (Mr. Item- brandt Peale) who has founded it, will have an op* portunity of displaying not only his own works, but those of others-and thereby find, without the aid of foreign patronage, an adequate reward from his fellow-citizens.
