Records relating to the Barony of Kendale now live

Three volumes of records relating to Kendale in Westmorland are now live. Organised by place, they give a digest of the key sources for the local history of the county from the twelfth to the nineteenth centuries. Records of the Cistercian house at Holm Cultram now live

The Register and Records of the Cistercian abbey of Holm Cultram are now live. This volume, from the Record Series of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society, contains an edition of the cartulary of Holm Cultram plus other related records. This edition complements the narrative account of the abbey given in the Victoria County History for Cumberland, and the accounts of other Cistercian houses also in the VCH. Read it at:

Charters of Glasgow now live

These key documents for the history of Glasgow (1175-1649) are now live. Part 1 contains a detailed narrative account of the constitutional evolution of the city. Part 2 provides transcripts and abstracts of the 123 key charters and additional related material. These complement the Records of the Burgh for 1573 to 1690, already on the site. Read more at:

Daniel Lysons's 'Environs of London' now complete

With the launch of volumes 2, 3 and 4, this key source for the history of London is now complete. Volumes 2 and 3 cover the historic county of Middlesex in alphabetical order from Acton to Willesden. Volume 4 describes the parts of Essex, Hertfordshire and Kent that are within twelve miles of the City, including East Barnet, Barking and Greenwich. The 'Environs' complements our other general histories of London, including 'Old and New London' and John Noorthoucks's 'New History'. Read more at:

The Survey of London vol. 36 (Covent Garden) now live

Volume 36 of the Survey of London is now live. The volume recounts the story of the Covent Garden Piazza's evolution (and eventual redevelopment), including the building of St Paul's Church, the area’s principal monument. In addition to the Piazza and surrounding streets, it also describes the buildings of the Covent Garden Market. Read it, and other volumes of the Survey, at:

'A Topographical Dictionary of Wales' now live

Samuel Lewis's 'Topographical Dictionary of Wales' (1849) is now live. This publication, originally in two volumes, gives a historical conspectus and contemporary description for counties, cities, parishes, towns, villages and hamlets in mid-nineteenth century Wales. Its companion publication for Scotland is already live on BHO. Read them both at:

Register of the Freemen of York now live

The Surtees Society edition of these records, from 1272 to 1759, is now live. These records record the admissions to freedom of the city, organised by regnal year. They produce a fascinating record of the population and trades of York. Read more at:

Cumberland Lay Subsidy of 1332-3 now live

The record of the lay subsidy for Cumberland of 1332-3 is now live. Edited in 1906 by J.P.Steel from records in the National Archives, it records the names of prominent inhabitants of Cumberland, grouped by ward and by vill. It is an invaluable source for medieval genealogy and economic history. Read it and other lay subsidy records at:

Records of the Burgh of Glasgow now live (1573-1690)

Three volumes of these key records for the history of Glasgow are now live. They contain extracts from the Council Records of the Burgh and from the accounts of the city Treasurers. They give a detailed account of a period of political turmoil at a national level and of growing independence for the Burgh. Two volumes of the Charters of the city will be added to the site in the next few weeks. Over the next two years we shall be adding similar records for the same period for the city of Edinburgh.
