"The Baltimore Preachers* Meeting. December 15,1902. Mr. George M.Upshur, Dear Sir:——The Preachers' Meeting of Baltimore City instructed me to send to you the following resolutions unanimously adopted by that body. "That The Methodist Preachers* Meeting of Baltimore hereby records its appreciation of the valuable work of the Anti-Saloon League of Maryland in the cause of temperance, and with especial reference to the prosecution of offenders against the law3 of the State with reference to the Liquor Laws of the same. We earnestly invoke for the League the support of all good citizens in the prosecution of its work. Second: That we commend as worthy of the esteem and support of our citizens the Superintendent of the League, Rev. S.E.Nicholson, who has been unjustly assailed because of his interest in the work committed to him. Third: That we view with great concern the recent acquittal of Captain Pumphrey, of the Detective Force, by the Board of Polic© Commissioners, of the charges growing out of his connection with the cases for the prosecution of offenders against the Liquor Laws in Harford County. That we feel that the office of t":e Board of Police Commissioners and of all officers appointed by and serving under them, should place them avowedly and clearly in favor of the prosecution of law breakers and we urge upon the Commissioners that no man who undertakes and is in sympathy with the cause of Lawbreakers is a fit person to be a member of the Police Force. JAMES L. McLAIN, Secretary." In reply to the above the Secretary was directed to address the Baltimore Preachers' Meeting, as follows:- "Dec. 19,1902. Baltimore Preachers' Meeting, James L. McLain, Secretary, Baltimore, Maryland. Gentlemen:- The Board of Police Commissioners acknowledges the receipt of your communication under date of December 15,1902, addressed to Mr. George M.Upshur, President, conveying resolutions adopted by the Baltimore Preachers' Meeting.
