To be completed in twelve mouths from
the time it is put 10 press. In Txelvs Parts.
Price two dollars and seventy-five cents
each.
The literary Quackery which prompts the
publisher of every new work to end-avor to
magnify the merits of his own intended pub.
lication by depreciating the merit of all other
similar productions, is, at once, both useless
and despicable ; because nothing human can
ris? into esteem and honor, merely, upon the
ruins of toother's reputation, without some
intrinsic sxcellence of its own. The Publish-
er of Gregory's Cyclopedia, therefore, will
leave it to others to discover and declare, that
the generality of Books called Kncyclopadias
are, in their very constitution and form, too
expensive and two dumb' rsome, to be,either
extensively circulated, or generally useful ;
and will content himself with briefly stating
the claims and pretensions of the Boo;; which
he hereby propo er to the public
First, It comprises the most valuable informa-
tion in ail the important departments of Know-
ledge, collected and arrang'ed by some of the
best scholars, and the most comprehensively
scientific men, this day existing in Britain
Secondly- This information is comprised in a
small compass, and conveyed in language at
once perspicuous and. elegant; so that the
reader may, in a short space of time, with
ease and pleasure to himself, obtain thai real
acquaintance with the moral, literary, politi-
cal, and philosophical world, wide'* other
wise could not be acquired from the larger
works in which the sources of these streams
of knowledge are contained, but by a whole
lii'e devoted to severe and unremitted labour.
In order to render the work worthy of the
patronage of the American public, the Pub-
lisher has engaged all the best American
Artists to engrave the Copper-Plates, of which
138 will be given in the course of the work ;
and has also secured the assistance of Edi
tors of acknowledged talents and inlqrn ation
It is with the blended emotions of confi
dence and delight, that the Publisher an-
nounces his intention of offermg to his nil-
merpus patrons and supporters, a work
which combines eloquence with economy, and
practicable utility with sph ndor
That the Patrons and Subscribers of thi>
intended Publication, may be thoroughly as-
sured of not having their patronage and pro-
lection abused by any delect in the execution
of the work itself, or any wantol punctuality
in its appearance, at the stated and appointed
times, the page given as a specimen of the
style in which the ptblisher solemnly pledges
himself the whole shall be executed, may he
seeti at the office, of the Federal Gazette
On account of the groat abundance of mat-
ter and the number of Engravings which the
work will contain, and in consequence of the
va&t expence necessarily attending the prose
oution of such a plan, the publisher is com.
pelle 1 to solicit the aid of a sufficient number
of subscribers, to enable him to carry his pur.
posa into full effect, before he puts any part
of the intended Publication into the hands of
the Engraver or the Printer.
The acknowledged and intrinsic merits of
the work are such as to ensure it a very ge-
neral and extensive circulation : wherefore
it only remains to the Publisher to ensure
to bis subscribers that the whole of the exe-
cution, as to the accuracy and elegance of the
engravings, piper, and type, shall be such,
as in every respect to correspond with the
high value of the work. As to the engrav-
ings, as yet no specimen can be given; but
the Publisher pledges himself that they shall
be at least equal, and many superior to those
in the London edition.
That there may be no possibility of dis-
appointment to the patrons of literature as to
this work, the subscriptions are proposed to
be received on the following
CONDITIONS :
1st. The whole shallbe compriscdin Twelve
parts, one of which shall be published month-
ly. Each part shall contain about 150 quarto
pages, neatly done up in colored paper, at the
price of 7Vuo l)t.!!a:s and Seventy fve Cents,
which is to be paid for on the delivery of
each part—the whole twelve parts when
completed will make two volumes in quarto,
containing 238 Copper-Plate Engravings,
which alone are worth the price of the whole
work, li will contain more thai: double the
matter of any similar work that has ever
neen published 111 this country-
2¦ Kpenae of a work Which contains the
substance of all that is known on every sub-
ject, literary and scientific, will be only 36

An Infalliabl'e Cure for the
Tooth Ache
I know that various opinions exist concern-
ing my advertsiug the price of curing the
Tooth Ache—some say I am joking with the
public, others say if I had really discovered
a cure, for that tormenting maladv I ought fu-
tile sake of humanity, to make it public, and
support the fact by all necessary aad convinc-
ing evidence : I have taken the advice, and
therefore
1st. Declare that I have given my newly
discovered Jissen'e of Sulp'.ur, I diink to near
one hundred different persons who we/eaf
fiicted with the pain arising from hollow or
decayed teeth, and 1 do not know of one in-
stance where it has failed in prod rcingacure
nor do I believe it ever will, if used accord-
ing to my directions ; for I am persuaded
from a knowledge of its nature and .'fleets,
that this Essence has power to remove the
pain of hollow or decayed teeth, to as great
a certainty as water has power to extinguish
fire.
2.1. I do knowithatit has no tendancy to de-
stroy the Enam. I of the Teeth, orinjnrsthe
gums, but on tiie contrary believe it ..ii! pre-
vent the scurvy in the gums, and preserve
the teeth from decay.
3d It maybe taken inwardly with safety;
I have swadowed it often, and will at any
time drink it, to remove the scruples of the
timorous,
4th. If ever the above mentioned Essence
should fail in producing the desired effect, &
the tooth or teeth for which it was taken to j
cure, should at atlj futui"" period be extract- ]
ed, all money received by me for such eu.es
shall be returned and double the sum if re-
q t ed.

Fersomdly appeared Francis Gay, before
me the subscriber, one of the justices ot tbs
peace for the county aforesaid, and HI ..'.e

tthat the facts stated above relative to
he toot'h ache, ig just and true to the best of
his knowledge and belief. Sworn before
JOHN A^SQJJIi'H.
Baltimore, 7th August, 1807.
Certificate of Samuel Vincent, Esq. Justice
of the Peace.
Some time in the Spring of the present
year, 1 was very much trouble with the tooth
ache. I hid thoughts oi having it drawn ;
t by chance happened in conversation with
¦vir Guy, to whom I related my intention.
He advised me to avoid extracting the tooth,
as he presumed he had a specific, and re-
quested me to make a trial ; when lie men-
tioned this to me, I recoiled that I was told
by some person that he had cured him of the
110th ache ; I determined to give it a trial,
and made use of his soluli > , p rhaps three :
or four times, and have not had any return of
it
About three months since a colored f
mine, was also afflicted with the Same pain —
I sent b»r to Mr. Guy, who also furnished
her with, I presume, the s.-.me solution, and
after three or four washings, the pain was re-
moved, and no complain) since.
SAMUEL VINCENT.
Certfieateof the liev. Alexander M'Cuinc.
I hereby certify that I was afflicted with
the tooth ache from about the first of lan
March to the begining of June ; at which
period I was on my way to the Dentist, when
I met with a friend, who understanding
where I was going, andvised me to go to
Mr. Guy, and he would cure me With much
persuasion I agreed to make the trial not be
lieving, however, that I derive much advan-
tage (if any) from it. But to my great sur-
prize and satisfaction, I was perfectly cured,
by applying his tooth water only twice, since
which I have been ?s free of tne tooth ache
as I have been at any period of my lite.
ALEXANDER M'CAINE.
Feil's-Point, August 7th, 1807.
Baltimore, August 7, 1807-
Certificate of Eli He^it.
This is toccrtu'v, that about tour months
past, I had a severe tooth ache, for three
nights and days without intermission, and by
washing my mouth with what Mr. Guy calls
his Essence of Sulphur, 1 obtained immediate
relief, and liavG experienced no return of pain
from that time to the present.
ELI HE WIT, Market street.
We the subscribers, having, in both our
families, experienced the beneficial effects of
Mr. Francis Guy's Essence of Sulphur, as a
cure for the tooth ache, feel bound to declare,
(judging from what we have witnessed) that
we believe it possesses every virtue which
the inventor ascribes to it, and that it is a
sovereign remedy for this tormenting com-
plaint. NILES & FRA1LY,
Editors of the Evening Post.

The respectable names above render it
quite unnecessary to incur theexpence of pub-

cant should induce the proprietor to make a
