| Governor RitcMe, Lynching and Colored Police for Baltimore. To the Editor of the AFRO: I have just finished reading Governor Ritchie's speech at the Concord Club Dinner in which he made a bid for the Democratic Nomination which, if he is successful, may make him president of the United States. Several weeks ago I wrote you endorsing the Governor for President. Since then his failure to have the Salisbury lynchers punished has changed my mind. Democratic friends in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and New York have written me that they will not support Governor Ritchie as long as 142,000 colored people in Baltimore can not get him to appoint one of their number to the police force. No doubt, the Governor is mindful that the colored vote is the balance of power in several states above the Ohio and Potomac Rivers and these voters are more interested In rights than rum, hence, he will have to answer these questions: Why is it that colored people in Maryland do not hold either elective or appointive political positions in this State under the Democratic party? Why is it that colored people In Maryland are barred from being officers of the law in this State while colored officers patrol the streets of several towns in Texas, Tennessee and other Southern states? If the aspirant for the Presidency will not allow us to police our own districts "in the name of all of the gods at once" who would believe that he would appoint one of our group to a federal position in the event h* is elected President, or take a firm stand asrarnst mob violence?
